  1. Same with the old county hall (GLC building) by Waterloo being dismantled via cranes. It took well over a year and a half to strip apart due to the underground, gas mains, water, etc running under it. Although a total demolition via explosives would have been quite an exciting spectacle I suppose they were then able to recycle the asbestos effectively.
  2. Okie dokie Sean, I do see your point. Besides, shouldn't we all be in the lounge discussing this...?;-)

For example in some countries like Saudi Arabia it is actually illegal and that goes way beyond mere homophobia and I don't think any white settlers were there influencing public policy, although perhaps I could be wrong. 4. Oh silly me, then it's not past Dulwich Common! SORRY.
  5. Hackette, If you do a search (top right corner) you'll find a lengthy thread on the concrete house. The house is located on the Forest Hill end of Lordship Lane (it might even be called London Road) past Dulwich Common. Best, -C
  6. Chili and chocolate can be a very nice combination as one might see in Mexico, but not sure how it would be on a crisp!
  7. Alas! Yes, a Bordeaux... anything harder* would not be good on the health. The 2000 will do. Thanks again and see you in the .... the lounge! ps- do let me know when Philomena returns *alcohol-wise
  8. What? No ice as I presume it was stored properly. A slice of what, Banoffee Pie? Thank you!
  9. This time of year, La Dame de Montrose, 1998, but only a glass please.
  10. HeidiHi Wrote: Just to remind you - And English people do have bad teeth, haven't you seen the British Book of Smiles? ;-)* *Edited to say this last point is a huge tongue in cheek!
  11. Be careful Penk! Only 23 letters left...
  12. Dear Heidi, Yes, but you and I are not discussing the usage of the word "black" or the "N" word. In your previous posts, you argue that you don't like people generalising and using that word to describe the larger group. I agree with that, but merely stated that you shouldn't in turn generalise Americans as being racist especially when basing your facts on that pinnacle of grounded research - Youtube! This discussion is very circular and I am finished now. Thank you. Best, -C

However, your example of rappers in America constantly referring to their race I don't see as being racist necessarily, but perhaps a form of identity as most rappers in America are black. Sure, they use emotive language that perhaps incites at time, but I think it's more for effect, but then again what would I know as I'm not a rapper nor am I black. Your experience is your experience, as you put it. And to be honest, at times, colour and race seem to be a huge issue on this forum, as well. Best, C

Heidi, I agree with most of what you are saying but in reference to the above, please don't go start digging hole for yourself. I would think that Youtube is not the best barometer of American society. At least I hope that most people would not think of Americans as everything they've ever watched on Youtube. Best, -C
  15. Bloody hell, they don't give up... What is the point? Dear Future Trolls - The EDF is a fantastic, lively forum full of different people from different walks of life with different viewpoints. That is what makes it work - there is always something to talk about and we all have one common goal - to get to know each other and better our community. If you take the time to read through the threads, you will find there are discussions that range from debates about politics to conversations about music, football and what to make for dinner. In the lounge, there are even games being played (word association, limerick creating and that music game thingy just to name a few). Poetry, books, and movies are always being discussed. As East Dulwich has many families there is an active family room that allows people to discuss schools, find playgroups, nannies, hospitals, midwives and ask questions about immunisations, breastfeeding, childrens books, birthing pools, kid-friendly pubs, so on and so forth. It is a wealth of invaluable answers and advice to first time parents, experienced parents, grand parents and basically anyone who asks for it. We discuss the latest gossip about East Dulwich, traffic conditions, property prices, road works, planning issues, small businesses, new businesses, mean businesses, mean bacons sandwiches, and other seemingly mundane things, but things that affect our community. We are brought together by terrible things like fatal shootings, dog attacks, muggings, stabbings, car accidents, burglaries, and long queues at the organic butchers. We look out for one another and we care about our community. We are torn apart by aggression and insults of racism which perhaps exist due to the wide range of opinions, but are in no way the predominant tone of the forum. However, racism does happen and like the rest of the world, when it takes place, we try to clarify, educate, persuade and understand why. Like life, we are not nice and polite all of the time, we too have off days and say nasty things, argue incessantly, quarrel like children, whinge and pick on other forum user's spelling, syntax, grammar and typos. The EDF comprises people from East Dulwich, West Dulwich, Dulwich Village, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Peckham, Nunhead, (whisper it) Clapham, Singapore, China and where ever else there are people willing to join. There are many different personalities that make up the forum and we don't all agree all the time - we are chavs, lawyers, gays, mums, naval submariners, English, Irish, South African, Japanese, Americans, black, white, blue, red, poppies, daisies, lotus and yes, even a wolf. The EDF allows people to know what is going on in a vibrant and changing area, it is a happy, social forum and most of all, it is a welcoming forum. So why don't you join us? Best, -C Edited for gross typos that even I couldn't live with !
  16. I do apologise for my momentary whinge, just my personal aversion to that movie as it was my ex-h's favourite! I'm fine now.
  17. Ick, I hated the Big Lebowski, such a guy movie. But great news that the FHT are showing movies. ;-)
  18. As a driver I do believe that floral tribute make me think and slow down and pay more attention to the road. I think I can probably speak for most drivers and pedestrians. I had a friend die in a terrible accident in California over 15 years ago. He was drinking and ran a red light and smashed into a car of three innocent people who all also died. There was blood sprayed to high heaven on the buildings in the junction and it was noted as being the worst traffic accident in the history of the city. To this day, there is always a beautiful arrangement of fresh flowers placed on the corner where this accident happened and whenever I see it, it indeed makes me think. I would hope that it made others stop and think, as well.
  19. That makes sense. Apparently, some people have just too much time on their hands - signing up as another user and then talking about oneself and all that. Doesn't Southwark have any volunteering programmes?
  20. Rodwell Road has such a mix of Victorian houses, three story terraces on one end and extra wide semi-detached on the other across from smaller two story terraces... interesting though! It's a nice street because it doesn't connect to Lordship Lane so you don't get too many racers unlike some of our other streets.
  21. Okay, will do. Will be up early scanning "wanted/recommendation" section for sheep and cheap electrical goods from China.
  22. But surely slight potty mouth isn't as bad as pure aggression as I've seen. Besides, I didn't think BBW was that bad - just the thing he wrote about beastiality that was up for about 30 seconds before being removed was slightly off colour.
  23. Dear Grumpus, "Get a life and live it, the world will be a better place if people stop moaning." Speak for yourself. Best of luck for the future, -C
