  1. They have clear plastic bags for recycling - I've seen them somewhere and they were proper Southwark labelled recycling bags, but I can't remember where I've seen them out. Perhaps if you contacted the environment team, they could send you some? I don't know what's in your recycling, but we bought a can crusher (<?10) and that's made a huge difference to getting everything fitting in our blue box. Plus we've hung onto the bag for our paper recycling.

  4. I got loads of html gibberish too, but managed to extract this link:
  5. Try these people? http://www.envirogroup.co.uk/Envirogroup_used_Vegetable_oil_collection.html "Waste vegetable oil collection, waste cooking oil collection in the UK and specifically in Kent, Hampshire, Berkshire and the London areas." and also: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200084/recycling_and_waste/1365/a_to_z_of_waste_and_recycling/4 Cooking oil Cooking oil can be taken to your household waste reuse and recycling centre to be recycled to create bio fuel for vehicles. If you pour cooking oil down the drain it could cause blockages. If you have a very small amount, you should leave it to solidify and then scrape it into your household refuse bin. If you have large quantities of used cooking oil there are specialist companies that will collect it for reuse or convert it into bio-fuel. Pelican Food Services will collect it for free, if you have at least 100 litres. Call 01299 827444.
  6. Southwark started a public consultation on whether they should introduce a borough-wide dog control order. You can read the background and click through to fill out the questionnaire here: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/news/article/143/southwark_explores_new_laws_to_tackle_out_of_control_dogs It's a simple form with one page of questions, mostly multiple choice and one open-text field to give your general thoughts. The consultation runs through to February. It mentions that a DCO is shortly to be introduced on One Tree Hill. Does anyone know what the restrictions will be? I've only been able to find various stuff dated 2008.
  7. I rang them up and the letters seemed to have stopped. It's only been about a month tho, so I may be being overly optimistic.
  8. I walked by here today on my way to Sydenham Hill Woods and noticed there's a notice up about planning investigation into the work done on the White Gothic House without permission - specifically it being built too close to the Concrete House, IIRC. Can't remember the relevant dates though...
  9. I too live very close - we just moved to the area in Feb. I noticed the fusion sign outside and had made vague attempts to find out what facilities were available in the hopes that they had at least some running machines to keep me running through the dark winter nights, but fusion had stopped managing it and other attempts to find out about the sports centre failed, so I just gave up. Can't see how they can claim lack of demand when they make it so hard for anyone to find out about it!
  10. There was news on this earlier this year, saying that chugging companies earn more per signature than the charity does in the first year - here's a link (sorry the Daily Mail was the first one to come up, but has the relevant facts) http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1306567/Fees-high-street-chuggers-eat-millions-donated-charities.html. But as AJM says, the charity will hopefully get more over time from the donors who remain signed up, not just in money. Also initial studies showed that chuggers were reaching people who don't give in other ways/weren't reached by traditional fundraising activities. I don't know if this still holds true today, but they wouldn't keep doing it if it wasn't working... FWIW, I work for a not-for-profit, not a registered charity. We have been a victim of the clothes donation bag scheme with some dodgy company claiming to be collecting on our behalf fraudulently. So please do check with the named group/charity when you receive these through the door.
  11. I received a leaflet from Southwark Council informing me that there will be a session at the Herne Tavern tomorrow evening (22 Oct) between 7-9pm to ask questions and give feedback on the new scheme. I assume there will be other sessions in other areas...
  12. Sorry, I don't have a login either, I was just basing it on the part of the article I could see! But it looks shorter now - weird! From my cache, here's what I could see earlier: AS THE old limerick goes, "a wonderful bird is the pelican". And Gargi is a little bit more wonderful than most. Not only is he rather handsome (in an odd, pelican sort of way), he has become an expert at posing for the cameras and enjoys the distinction of being London's first pelican commuter. He spends part of his time in St James's Park with its four permanent pelican residents. But unlike them he is an interloper, and has never had his wings clipped. So when he feels a bit peckish - and being a chap "whose beak can hold more than his belly can", that is quite often - he simply flies off in search of more dinner. Park manager Mark Wasileski said: "Gargi is often seen walking the park's paths. We have also had sightings of him on top of Primrose Hill admiring the view, down by the Thames fishing and at London Zoo where he goes for second helpings." So frequent are Gargi's trips between the park and the zoo that he has become... Publication: The Evening Standard (London, England) Publication Date: 31-JAN-06
  13. Hi Ivor, I *think* there were two collies and a boxer, and I'm afraid I just didn't clock what the fourth dog was, he was so angry and I was trying to keep my own dog out of the way. I was just taken by how afraid the one collie appeared - I watched him after he passed me and she was really trailing behind with her tail tucked in. (I'm assuming that she was a she, but didn't see the anatomical details, I just thought she was pretty!)
  14. Well, according to this old article in the Evening Standard, one of the pelicans was not part of the 'collection' and just arrived one day, and thus does not have his wings clipped & has been seen flying in London: http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-9473627/Mind-out-there-s-a.html So I guess it's possible, as pelicans can apparently live 50 years!
  15. Could it not have been a heron? They commonly get mobbed when they fly as well and is much more likely. I thought the pelicans had their wings clipped so they couldn't leave St James' Park?

  17. Hi mrsw, According to the printed schedule we received with our bins etc, there will be a green bin collection this week too, before it switches to fortnightly. (and no, mine's not anywhere near full)
  18. I'm still struggling to get my 23L brown bin. Despite requesting one when the pilot was announced, I was delivered a huge brown bin. When I asked for it to be swapped, it was promptly taken away and we still haven't received the 23L bin. I sent a reminder email yesterday after having to put out my food bags 'naked' for collection, I came home tonight to find that I had been left a little brown kitchen caddy. Which I don't need, as we have one already. So have sent another email requesting that they collect the kitchen caddy and bring me my 23L bin! So that'll be 4 visits to bring me one bin and some compostable bags then, very efficient! *sigh*

Vegetarians don't need to give up red wine & neither do vegans - there's loads out there! For example, http://www.barnivore.com/ (I have no affiliation with this site) Most supermarkets with online shopping do allow you to search for veggie wines & some for vegan. Plus there are specialist online shops too. There are several brands usually found in bars & restaurants that you can remember when out & about. It is possible to stick to your morals and drink. :-)
  20. Thanks Cate - definitely interested in finding Arturo! :-)
  21. @KestonKid We are in the exact same situation. I emailed Southwark last week when our huge brown bin arrived and they replied very quickly saying that bin would be removed & replaced with a smaller one. The big bin was removed yesterday but we haven't received the smaller one yet. Neighbours who didn't have room for the big bin have already received the little one - it's the 23L one on James Barber's post above about the pilot scheme. no idea whether you could just use the kitchen caddy. We wanted something a little bigger for garden stuff that we couldn't put in the compost, like woody stuff, but the 23L bin may struggle with that... we'll see how it goes
  22. Yes, I saw bags of compost at the dump/recycling centre at Manor Place when last we were dropping off some stuff. Don't know how much they charge for it. (It's on Manor Place, off Walworth Road, if you haven't been there before) Agree that they could have been more helpful on the phone!
  23. We had a 'problem' cat at our old place. Lion poo/zoo poo only worked for a short while. We found that once we put bark chippings on the garden - which was just a mulch, not specifically to deter the cat - that the cat cleared off. With the vegetable patch, we had to use twigs and bamboo canes in between the plants. If they can't squat, they can't go! Good luck!
