Crystal Palace Road (pre-1914 photograph)
EDmummy replied to macroban's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So Macroban, are you going to tell us where the photos are from? I would be really interested to see if there are any photos of our street, Hindmans Rd. Our house and the one it is attached to date from around 1855, a doctors surgery and residence and the coach house. Servants quarters were added on the other side in 1900. 1855 is quite early for around here. -
Crystal Palace Road (pre-1914 photograph)
EDmummy replied to macroban's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Fabulous photo! Can't work out where on Crystal Palace Road it is. The houses look so grand. Perhaps it is the East Dulwich Road end. Road and gardens also look wider. Where are you getting these photos from? -
I was sadly driving past there a little while after it happened. Road closed off and lots of emergency vehicles. My osteopath, who I was going to visit said he had walked past there whilst it was still being tended to by ambulances. He thought more than one person died. I was led to believe that it was a number of men from the same Irish family. Could be wrong. Very, very sad. The shrine doesn't look unlike those found all over Italy.

Got a call yesterday from my bank's fraud team. A clone of my card had been used in South African 10 minutes beforehand. Very quick detection but I think my card had already been flagged for possible fraud as I had an unrecognised cheque on my statement (may be legitimate but I cannot remember writing it). The only shops I have used have been big stores - Sainsburys, Woolworths, Boots etc., but I did have one transaction at Budgens. Anyone else who has had their card cloned used Budgens? Only cash machine used has been the one at Barclays on LL.

Child Trust Fund (Lounged - not specific to ED)
EDmummy replied to CamberwellOz's topic in The Lounge
Mellors you do get a choice whether to go for stocks or not. CamberwellOZ, you should have received a pack with details from the FSA (Financial Services Authority) with details of the options for the ?250. There should also be some recommended funds. I agree with buggie, Martin Lewis provides great advice. The Guardian on a Saturday in the Money section also has lists of the best performing accounts etc. This should also be available on the Guardian's website. We personally went for a safe option and top it up to the level you are allowed to do each year. Goodluck. -
I am afraid I am a bit of a fan of the place but agree some of the staff could do with a bit more customer centred training. I am sure if the owner knew anyone had been treated badly she would certainly try her very best to help. I am afraid Woodie that it is just a fact that very few if any stores will accept returned cosmetics.

This is all so off thread. Give Cherry a go at some on thread responses!!
-
I am very confused by some of the responses to this genuine post. Is it a joke that a single parent may be trying to find a local network of people in a similar situation? Cherry, I know a number of local single parents but Muttley is probably right, many don't have time to sit down and respond to the forum. Good luck.

East Dulwich Garden Centre - possibly replaced with flats
EDmummy replied to TJS's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
May have been mentioned before, I afraid I don't have time to read all the posts, BUT where are all these new happy residents going to park their (multiple) cars? Visiting a friend in Derwent Grove is an absolute nightmare if I take the car (of course, only when it is raining and two children and buggy reluctant to get wet or go out in dark). Parking in and around that area is almost impossible - most residents end up parking their cars up to two streets away from their own home. Residents parking permits will not solve this problem. Many of the houses in the area are multiple occupancy - which means multiple cars. There just is not enough space for more residents and their vehicles. -
Should East Dulwich twin with Dulwich Hill?
EDmummy replied to macroban's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
May have missed something here but are we talking about Dulwich Hill in Sydney? Not sure what it is like but could ask my brother who lives in Sydney. We should do some research as it may be a bit dodgy. -
Kings both times. First time was before the new wing was built. Baby and I left after 10 hours (despite many complications) because I thought I would have less chance of infection at home. Second time, new hospital wing, complications (10lb 4oz baby!!) again but the cleanliness, staff and support was stupendous - especially special baby unit. Have nothing but praise. Oakfield midwives both times supported through pregnancy and labour but when it came to the crunch Kings saved both of my babies. Bottom line is - the medical staff are first class in this country (my opinion I know but have had experience in other countries to compare), they want your baby to be born safely as much as you do. Cleanliness is an issue but you can always take your own dettol wipes, ensure staff wash their hands, wear flip flops in the shower (did with both of mine but didn't really need them second time around). Many best wishes and I hope you make the choice that is good for you.

I HATE AIRCRAFT NOISE - but knew it was part of the deal when I moved to East Dulwich - Concorde was flying overhead when we first saw the garden in the house we bought! Like many others, I am not keen to have the air noise pollution increased where I live but not sure how much petitioning I do personally will make a difference. All I know is that that the next house I buy will be somewhere without a flight path overhead and no plans for one in the future - know anywhere on the globe that this place may be???

Anyone heard about one of the local primary schools having a budgetary shortfall and having to lose some teaching assistants? Not sure if appropriate or fair to mention school by name but some may know which one I am talking about. Perhaps I should approach the Head directly! On reflection I feel that my post may have been inappropriate. I am feeling guilty and a little irresponsible so I have asked The Administrator to lock this thread so that it can quietly be put to rest.

I wonder if the builders tea party had anything to do with Somerfield's sponsorship of Macmillan Cancer Support. Bit early for World's Biggest Coffee Morning but sounds like something they may do. Somerfields have just supported Macmillan to the tune of ?1 million. Great for people affected by cancer!

26 Lordship Lane [next door to White Stuff] (Lounged)
EDmummy replied to Ultraconsultancy's topic in The Lounge
Went to an Oliver Bonas in Upper Street once. Hate the gift tat but they did have some lovely individual (in a non-mass produced way) clothing. -
Are you guys still on message! Yet another post where I mention chips - they are lovely at GBK - anyone guess I started a diet after New Year!!
-
EDdaddy has always complained that their fish (grilled plaice/sole etc) tasted soapy. They also have no knowledge on how to cook Snapper. Admit I love their chips, though.

Louisa, I also hope you are not generalising when you make comments about "working classes". I just like good quality Italian food. I work hard for my money and have no desire to lose it down the drain on a gee gee. My views about betting are not ones I care to share with a forum, everyone to their own I say....mine is Italian food!!

I am disgusted that this site will be turned into yet another betting shop - anyone see William Hill over flowing? The council would not change the status of the site for a restaurant (Mr Carluccio I need you!)but is quite happy for yet another bookie to open up.

We have had our problems in the past but I would just like to say that I think they do an incredibly hard job pretty well. Our new postie is cheerful and have recently been receiving mail before 9.00am. Not a job I would like to be doing on these bitterly cold mornings.

Break-ins & burgularys: East Dulwich Road area
EDmummy replied to flong's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So sorry Gemma T, sounds like the same MO as the thieves who broke into our house in the early Autumn. Nothing of value downstairs in our house - no large flat screen TV, reasonably old iMac (attached to all sorts of wizardry thanks to EDdaddy) but did get keys to our car and used the car to empty 2 other houses in the same night. Bastards. I do hope you don't think this is the norm for ED though - most of us are lovely - really. The lesson is - we ALL need to be safety conscious - put on that dead lock! -
Where is Bar Story? Am I just old?
-
It is a catch 22 really. I recently wrote to one of our councillors (no reply after 3 weeks) because our car has been damaged by the "complete" speed bumps on the road outside Alleyn's (mechanic said nothing else could have caused problem) and I only ever do just under 20mph. Equally, my street has the cushion bumps and we do get the occasional car roaring down at 40mph. There is one positive side to complete speed bumps - when I was in labour with my first child and needed to be rushed to hospital the paramedic went on the streets with the most speed bumps on purpose!

Filming outside Budgens on Northcross rd this am....
EDmummy replied to fractionater's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Why was James Nesbit there then? He doesn't appear in the cast list for Gunrush. Perhaps he was just passing and couldn't resist a turn.
