Decided to buy all Christmas gifts at Chener Books and Rye Books...
MrBen replied to Ms Blueberry's topic in The Lounge
Two great local indie businesses with good choice and service perhaps? Versus shipped from a warehouse owned by a US Corp manned by Latvia slave droids. Just a wild guess. -
Two mates out there. Great for a few years, tax free, good package etc but soon has you craving real culture somewhere with history. The times I've been out, traffic was gridlocked. For a new build city they didn't exactly major on road planning. Add the russian hookers, terrible human rights as above and lots of property goons and it doesn't make for long term appeal. I'd go for a bit though if only to get some weather.

Sounds like poor training in a local branch? To be honest I find that local banking is a bit mickey mouse. At mine, LTSB, they're not used to much more than shop owners coming in with a days takings and little old ladies. Yes,really friendly staff who like a gossip are lovely etc but don't go asking them for more than ?1k in cash without having to sign the official secrets act, give fingerprints etc. In the City branches they don't bat an eyelid.

Hmmm... proper fox hunting OR futile debate (at no doubt great tedious length) about whether restaurants should hand out expensive olives for free....tough call.

I've decided I'm going to run this in Nunhead Cemetery next summer: "Edgy, anti-consumptive street art by Men with Beards" Edgy anti-consumption street art by men with beards is a simplistic but post-ironic take on the ironic juxtapositions found in the urban hipster art movement of the early 2010's. It examines the tat consumption generated from the middle class movements anti-consumptive message before the main protagonists disappeared up a giant rectal passageway. As part of the attraction there will be an interactive "bouncy sphincter" for both children and adults alongside a giant life sized rat with a machine gun. Mulled wine and prosecco will be served.

Olivegate. Not today please Fox - spare us all.

I've been to a few telly shows and to be honest didnt really enjoy them. One was a sitcom written by a girl I was dating at the time. The other was Jools Holland. The studios were stuffy, we were given 1 warm bottles of Becks each and lots of hanging around/retakes gets tediuous. As was the warm up clown they always bring on. It put me off for life.

When we were 19 we did a deeply ironic radio show on uni radio. In second year we had to progress so made it a post ironic take on an ironic radio show. Then we realised the irony of a post-ironic take on an ironic radio show. We had become knobs. Disappearing ever so slowly up our own rectums.

Is that you with the grey side parting and blue anorak/blouson jacket Foxy?

Love the FM Mangale - its like how Hisars used to be but better. One for Annette, but do they use lots of lighter fluid on those open grills? I could swear I could taste it on my last Kuzu Sish....

One other thought....whilst I get Louisa's point, there really aren't too many bankers living in East Dulwich. They're all living in much nicer areas!

DaveR Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I think you're being overly generous to the poster > there, and the comment still doesn't make any > sense. I think you just misinterpreted it Dave. I think Louisa's spot on with the observation. East Dulwich is no longer the only show in this part of town. Peckham and Camberwell have got interesting and are now the default choice for the local sub 30-something crowd, whilst ED has become more and more a family area. When I was 25 I'd happily go out for a few on a Tuesday night. But young family types rarely go out midweek - more likely weekenders when the babysitters in. So I actually think the potential demographic for midweek custom has narrowed not widened. And that subtle shift is now hurting an already saturated Lordship Lane. The smart startups were picking a spot on Bellenden Road surrounds 3 years ago.

Woman who doesn't like poncey shops asks where to find a poncey shop. It must be a wind up. 10/10!

The Gowlett's American Hot with chilli oil and a pint of ale is a thing of beauty and remains one of my favourite meals locally. You also wont get that atmosphere in Franco Manca.

Looks like some good people and backers behind it and no doubt the stop/start opening will all be forgotten once its up and running. But from a layman's perspective their PR thus far has been terrible. Having website/Twitter feed/Facebook channels set up only works if you update them. Those in the brand management business now will tell you that an outdated, empty Twitter page looks far worse than not having one at all. I'd surmise that all thats happened here is: - Their refurb works have overran by 1-2 months. Not uncommon but it will have thrown original opening plans /dates out of kilter. - They can't yet be 100% sure on a fixed opening date so have opted not to say anything at all. But this is worse. If you start communicating you have to keep communicating. Or you get 12 pages of speculative drivel... like this thread. - They're wary of the East Dulwich Forum and so avoiding it. I don't blame them given some of the dickheads on here. But with 5000 people locally reading they'd do better to manage it rather than ignore it. All it takes is a few simple friendly updates and perhaps a quick 2 hr open invite and that would work wonders. Just engage. They'll have plenty of fans if they're good (myself included) to back them up.

Franco Manca anyone? http://www.francomanca.co.uk/

Good to see that donkey you bought is actually doing alright Mick. And a nice excuse for a trip to France.

They're delayed still. Current estimates are first week December. Looks like the Masterchef has arrived though

Good yoghurts. Anyone?

I know, I know....I too wanted live chickens out back and a barman also powering the lights by cycling a kinetic generator.

Sue- This piece from Big Hospitality explains what The Patch means by "self-sustainable" and does makes some sense. Basically as much as possible will be sourced from within a 15-25 mile radius from people to ingredients and will be supplemented by veg from their own kitchen garden once established..... http://www.bighospitality.co.uk/Business/Entrepreneur-plans-to-turn-East-Dulwich-pub-into-London-s-first-self-sustaining-community-gastropub It also is quite open about the Enterprise tie.....
