Any bar/club/restaurant with full width mirror above a row of urinals without dividers. You not only get a great view of your own knob, but everyone elses.... in stereo. To cap the effect, little flecks of piss spray the mirror glass, distorting everyones knob. You can stare at the ceiling but risk serious backsplash. Design over function really hurts.

Trying to buy a house in this area is near impossible

Today's FT predicts the end of record low mortgage rates is close. Last week, four major lenders raised their fixed rates for the first time in 12 months??basically they're already pricing in a predicted base rate increase in Q4/Q1 2015. Was 2007 that long ago? Not really but funny how many buyers since have forgotten when it was like this: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/55a55106-2a41-11dc-9208-000b5df10621.html#axzz2slAboNoh -
I think you'd have to be insane to take any kind of mortgage advice via an Estate Agent's broker. I like the ThisisMoney website for general personal finance stuff. Clear, fairly independent and without the usual bs. http://www.lcplc.co.uk/thirdparties/thisismoney/mortgages2/home/ Note: Fixed rates have only this week just started to rise again, anticipating a rise in interest rates early next year (2015). Today's FT is asking of the end of record low mortgage deals is nigh?this is the time to get a good fixed rate bargain.

Can we not just call him Dave?

Anyways on that note I'm going for Jack White and, taking it right back to 1920's, Blind Blake.

The BBC doc with The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White is worth a watch and supports what Mick says above. It's just such a daft name in anything other than a stage context. Like, back at home, does his missus call really him that? Any chance you could mow the lawn today The Edge? The Edge! Cup of tea and a biscuit?? etc

Will you be bringing your playing cards Fox? ;-)

El Pibe - you still drinking it this weekend?

On the 1st floor its connected by a door to the stairwell landing and used as a storage cupboard. So that aperture would need dricked up. Downstairs its the garden shed for the gf occupier. Both are useful and add some sq ft. Quotes to demolish it, skip hire and make good are ?2k abouts so not that much more to rebuild it(split 3 ways between leaseholders)

?so apologies in advance. I have a flat with an old 2 story brick toilet column at the back that is coming away from the main building (2 inch cracks in some parts). It's basically not connected to the internal living space and is now just used for outdoor storage. Option 1: A structural survey to declare subsidence + specialist underpinning and strapping it's flimsy walls to the main building. Cost: about ?7k OR Option 2: Knock it all down, put in proper foundations and build it back up to the original spec in brick. Without wasting money on surveys which will only tell me what I already know. Cost: ?5k (already quoted by my already proven builder) I want to go option 2 but if you knock something down (that is not listed or impacting neighbours) and build it back to exactly the same spec, do you actually need planning permission?

I think whats happening is that economic confidence is returning very quickly in London which is always the first to notice and benefit in terms of business and housing. The two problems I see with this are that (i) the recovery is only just starting in many regions outside of London and so there is that lag to consider and (ii)its all happening much faster than UK fiscal policy can adjust to without choking the recovery in the regions. So I'd like to see the BoE introduce a modest interest rate rise early rather than later but pitched at the right amount to slow things down yet maintain confidence. Something like 1% initially in the next quarter? The current London price spike in housing started in July 13 and prices have risen so steeply since that, rather than continually play catch up, agents have just gone super high and are now taking offers. This means that current valuations are now much higher than any actual sale amounts that will be achieved in practice. If I'm wrong on that and you have just sold (i.e. exchanged) your non-descript 4 bed terrace with bad layout for ?1.2M let me know.... The regional lag behind London won't last and the gap between London and regional prices is right now probably greater than ever so I'd say this is one of the best times in recent history to sell up your London flat and head for the country. If you can factor in the Help to Buy scheme into that (arguably a once in a lifetime policy that won't exist after the next election) then it looks even better still. And what not to do? Well for those sitting on London property you'd be dumb if you think you're virtual equity now makes you somehow "rich" or safe from future market moves. And it would be dumb to leverage their equity further into the current inflated market. Instead, I'd be remortgaging onto a longer term fix rates and paying down debt... if you're able to. It is a bubble, question is whether it deflates gradually or pops. Right now there's nothing to suggest the latter. Just my opinion...... -

Banks are like policemen. Never around when you need them / always there when you don't. -

At risk of pouring petrol on flames. In the past 6 months or so I'm genuinely (seriously!) hearing roaring sounds I didn't previously (am at southern end of SE22). I don't doubt we've always been on the flight path but something has def shifted where we are- altitude/approach combo perhaps?

It's an interesting enough site for the Dulwich Estate to do something a little more creative with this time given this land is on the fringes of the estate. It would be nice to see them drop their ultra conservative approach for once and to consider more progressive ideas - using their charitable status to endorse some kind of co-funded mixed housing /workspace project for key workers/local start ups?.

When was East Dulwich at it's best for you?
MrBen replied to Otta's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yep - 2003-2005 for me also. The Lane had a totally different feel on a Friday/Sat night. I was younger and single, although ED was never that good for finding girls then for some reason? (or it was just me). It had a less pretentious feel but was "on the turn", as an incomer it felt like a real find and was one of the few places I could afford a flat and not get mugged regularly. William Rose was a lingerie shop. Jerk Chicken was always open but always empty. Loved the bar scene then. The EDT was as random as ever and yes, its a forum cliche but Inside 72 deserves to be spoken of in reverential tones. Even if it was a bit "messy" shall we say. It was the people, music and general acceptance of all that made it brilliant. As Otta knows, I didn't ever get warm vibes from the CPT, but perhaps thats because I never connected with the regulars or didn't have the right kind of working class credentials. -
Trip advisor basically.....but consider where you want to base yourself. In NY location is key. Unless you enjoy the Metro or lots of $25 cab fares, its not much fun up by the park if you'll be spending most of your time in the East Village or Lower East Side. Last trip I stayed at The Standard Hotel: http://standardhotels.com/high-line which is full on Hipster w@nk. I felt pretty out of place there. My NY pals told me after that its a favourite of exhibitionists as each room has floor to glass windows overlooking the cityscape. Which explained why at 11pm that evening, I looked out my corner room and saw a bloke standing across on the 11th floor starkers with his todger out and wife behind him in full on lingerie. They saw me and waved! It was trying so hard to be trendy that even the bellboys had plaid shirts and beards. I genuinely hated it. For a good all round general location I would go mid town or Chelsea. I'd happily pick something simple at 3 or 4 stars with a decent review and spend what you save on shopping. You wont spend much time in your room anyway if you're doing it properly. And you can still hit the nicer hotel bars for a drink.

Hmmpf. Paddy Power offering 2-9 on a 1-2 year stay. Sod that!

I dont like to say it. But Moyes will be out by end of this season or at best in the early months of next unless results are stellar. You can put one season down as a "rebuild year" but beyond that patience will wear thin. Any of the bookies taking bets on it? I'll take 10-1 on an October 2014 exit.

Muji is good for simple quality bed linen and towels. You can't go wrong with white. I would avoid brown. Another easy way to change your look is to grow a beard. They are very popular at the moment. Hope this helps.
