  1. Fair enough Bobbsy - it sounds plausible.
  2. The Burritos on NXroad are very good.
  3. I would be pretty wary of any 'research' coming out of the Taxpayers Alliance. It's got a pretty clear agenda.

Kind of like National Insurance then, only hypothecated.
  5. Yeah, the loss of parking is a shame. It's difficult transporting a cat by foot. I hear the site is going to be become a supermarket and flats.
  6. They are a bit knackered - but surely an argument for introducing new ones, not reducing the service.

I personally think Southwark do a pretty good job. I do think that cutting back on free collections of bulky items will probably end up costing more than it saves. There 'regeneration' projects are well dodgy, but on the day to day business as usual stuff, they're not bad.
  8. That's good advice from Jeremy. I'm hoping that the trains will start to settle down soon (to some extent this has started to happen). Longer term it would be great if it were transferred over to TFL. Peckham Rye is quite well served, but if you live to the South of ED, it's a pretty long way.
  9. I have lived in the area a long time and commuting is getting more difficult in my opinion. The number of people using public transport has increased massively and capacity hasn't kept pace.
  10. Yes. Getting into work on time is becoming more and more difficult / unpredictable for lot's of people.

Exactly, these so called 'chefs' don't know what they're talking about!
  12. Otta Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There are established communities and tax payers > all around OKR. To read this you'd thinknot was > completely uninhabited. The 'opportunity areas' identified around OKR and Nine Elms / Battersea have with very little housing. This is why they've been identified for development. Of course people live in nearby, but these are not town centres like Camberwell for example. The residents of PC World and Toys R Us along with those of New Covent Garden flower market and the Nine Elms Lane car dealerships, have not been crying out for new transport or campaigning since the 50s for a tube extension.
  13. As taxpayers, we do pay for it of course. We pay for the development at Nine Elms / Battersea - in order to ensure maximum return for the developers of luxury flats and the speculators buying them off plan. These people need a huge taxpayer subsidy of course. Let's see how much 'affordable housing' gets built.
  14. Transport in this area is getting unbearably bad. The trains are generally unreliable and the buses unpredictable. It's pretty clear that TFLs policy on tube expansion (see Northern and now Bakerloo) is to only investing public money where it can be used to subsidise developers, so unlikely to see any significant future investment in established areas. Best bet, seems to be a transfer of rail services to TFL, but with a Labour mayor and a Tory government, that looks a long way off too. So it's bike if you can.
  15. Apparently there is a strike today.
  16. The amount of pollution this morning as a result of the gridlock / idling buses etc. was unbearable. One BMW with a broken exhaust was bellowing thick black smoke out whilst it sat, not moving on LL. By the time I got to work (I walked) I felt like I had smoked several packets of fags and my eyes were stinging.
  17. Yeah, the PC World is a dead zone for transport
  18. Good article on the challenges and opportunities facing us as a country https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/mar/11/brexit-kibasi-ippr-article-50-referendum-remain-leave
  19. I don't know any cats who are trained behavioural experts.
  20. 'Toad in the holes'. The collective noun is a bellywobbler of toad in the holes
  21. Let's see where all that public money goes and who benefits eh? Have a look at northern line extension and nine elms if you want a glimpse of the future of OKR 'development opportunity site'
  22. It's a difficult one. Areas change. Peckham's changed many times and previous businesses made way for what's there now. I accept that these hair salons have an important role, beyond just providing hair styling. But many businesses get pushed out when areas are redeveloped and they're not often provided with alternative, custom built premises as is happening in this case. To say it's segregation is a bit much. What's being proposed mirrors what currently exists - namely a hub / cluster of similar establishments which brings it's own benefits. The question of whether they will suffer from the reduced footfall is significant (if indeed they do rely primarily on passing trade rather than a loyal customer base), but it sounds as though that is something which is being thought of. What is significant is that many of those operating in the current units are only hiring a chair and pay a significant amount of their earnings to do so. It sounds like under the new arrangement, they'll have far more control than they do currently. Fundamentally though, it sounds to me, as though genuine thought has been given to how the impact of the changes might be mitigated, at least to some degree.
  23. I agree Titch, but actually reading about the plans for Peckham Palms and also the extremely precarious position of most of the salon workers currently - weighing this also against the opportunity to improve the station entrance etc - It's clear there has been genuine thought given to how one might balance these things. The article Siduhe linked to above is quite interesting.
  24. I think there is a lot in what you say Seabag. I certainly don't think there is some sort of conspiracy going on. the more I think about it.. and reading that FT article linked to above, it actually sounds like these salons are being offered a pretty good deal. There are plenty of other businesses who are just thrown out of their premises without the kind of mitigation being offered in this case.
