I hate the 'boys will be boys', 'just a bit of a scrap' mentality. It causes so much damage to boys and to society generally. I think we often take violence far too lightly.
If you live in other parts of London (outside of SE), you're usually close to a tube (or a docking station, or a superhighway). So it's hardly surprising that most don't feel it necessary to have a car.
Please can we have some improvements in public transport. A tube, secure bike parking at tube stations at least. Extension of hire bike scheme. A cycle super highway? a reliable and regular train service? Something. Then I'll happily accept the 'stick' of car scrapages etc.
There is nothing wrong with having a party, but it's only polite to speak to your neighbours in advance (which it sounds like they did in this case). East Dulwich is not the city, it is very much a suburban, residential area.
It's totally unreasonable to have an all night party in a quiet residential street without speaking to your neighbours in advance. The fact that the noise team shut it down also speaks volumes (excuse the pun). I think the OP was lucky that it was midnight and not later on in the night as (ironically) the noise team close up shop much after that.
Genuine question - do they allow local schools to use their facilities (as in the link James posted) for free, or do they charge them? If the former, then that is something at least. although they do get tax breaks in return of course.
