I am one of those people and yes, I am dismayed at what's happened to the Labour Party.
  4. It's all Brussels fault.... and political correctness.
  5. They can't operate door handles.
  6. I went to a Catholic school, where many of my friends families supported the IRA. Their houses would have pictures of paramilitaries on the wall in full garb holding guns. I certainly understood the situation in Northern Ireland to be a case of English occupation. Of course I now know it's more complicated than that and looking back realise how weird it was that people celebrated / glorified the violence in that way.
  7. This is the weirdest thread. It feels like there is something that people want to say, but aren't.
  8. What the point of this thread? 'Freedom of speech is good'?

Yes, it's terrible to believe in liberty.
  10. What is the point of the OP?

Their own statement about their aims makes it perfectly clear that they have a political agenda.

Oh yeah, I see what you mean. I'm not sure anyone really pays much attention to Corbyn though TBH.
  13. Term-time leave can only be granted in exceptional circumstances - so the head actually has very little discretion at all. Personally, I think that the state should get tae fook when it comes to dictating the day to day operations of the school. You're right though, this case is probably wasn't the strongest exemplar, when it comes to defending (a worthy) principle (or a worthy Principal for that matter).

It's not really about the individual though - it's the principle that this isn't in the hands of the school. I agree the guy sound like a dick. To be honest though so does the council. Who the hell fights a case of a ?60 fine in the Supreme court.
  15. It used to be the School Heads could grant up to 2 weeks term-time holidays at their discretion, in cases where there was generally good attendance. My reading of it (maybe I'm wrong) is that the law was changed to remove that discretion. It seems to me that the Head should run the day to day operations of the school, not the state.
  16. I'm not sure KL is getting a lot of support on here.
  17. Well that's a nonsense https://www.theguardian.com/education/2017/apr/06/supreme-court-upholds-ban-on-term-time-holidays-jon-platt-unauthorised-break . Surely this should be back in the hands of the School Head, using proper judgement / discretion?

  21. Yeah, not sure about the term 'sharing economy'. I think the idea of using technology to match spare capacity with latent or unmet demand clearly has the potential to generate value.

I am not defending Livingstone, but I don't think it's true that he said Hitler 'was a friend and supporter to the jews'. He suggested that Hitler supported, at one time, the relocation of German Jewish communities to Israel. I don't know, but I suspect this was what he was trying to get at.. that support for the idea of Zionism doesn't necessarily indicate support of Jewish people, their rights and freedoms, in the same way that being critical of Zionism, the policies of Israel, or the continued expansion of the state into modern day Palestine (through the expansion of illegal settlements) is necessarily antisemitic.
  25. tinfoil hat stuff from 'migration watch'(the name of that organisation says a lot about its state of mind).
