The fact is that sauntering along on a bicycle watching cars disregarding the speed limit, it is quite apparent that it does not get them to their destination more quickly.   13. We shouldn't be looking to increase vehicle speeds on London?s roads but rather to smooth flow and reduce ?stop-start driving?. Because drivers cut their spacing as braking distances contract, it might even be the case that more vehicles can use the available road space, leading to a reduction in standing traffic. It's possible that lower speeds lead to better 'flow', more predictable journey times and even lower emissions. Or maybe not - I don't know what the evidence is either way, but certainty wouldn't assume that faster speeds in London necessarily means faster journeys.
  14. I didn't know they were pedestrianising Oxford Street - that's great (about time too). Seems fair enough that people shouldn't cycle in a pedestrian area tbh. As long as there is plenty of bike parking around the border of the zone, then fine.
  15. It's a unclear in the link. I would have thought the remuneration level is a fairly important question to clarity in the job advert (unless money isn't really an issue to potential applicants of course).

  17. I predict the lowest turnout of any GE ever. Totally agree with Rendel - it's he right thing to do from May's perspective, but will be hugely damaging to the country and to politics.
  18. A number of former council officers involved in the negotiations with developer Lend Lease ended up as full-time employees of Lend Lease.
  19. Cycling definitely needs to be encouraged, but it's not a panacea. We need decent public transport too. There is an obvious shortage of high frequency train / tube services in SE London generally and we should be pushing as hard as possible to have this disparity addressed in my opinion. That doesn't necessarily mean a tube for ED, but better services across this part of London would seriously reduce congestion and pollution. It's kind of ironic that the one part of London with the worst roads into the centre (because of the river and the inevitable bottlenecks created by convergence of all roads around a few bridges), also has only a handful of underground stations.
