Wow, this thread jumps all over the shop. So - cars are dangerous. They crash into people and kill them. If they slow down people don't die. Pushbikes are less dangerous as they weigh about 1/20 of a car and therefore unless the pedestrian is unlucky will survive 999/1000. That doesn't excuse cyclists - data on cyclist/pedestrian accidents do no determine who is at fault, the majority will be on road not pavement. We have a society that worships speed and the right to go as fast as you want. 20mph speed limits will not change that overnight, it is a long game. Look back 20 years when most smokers thought that they had a right to share their smoke with everyone else, including the young. A different world now.

Thanks and I will post updates if I think this is of value. My first house was ex-council in Abingdon. It was considered to be a rough area, but generally we were happy. Then the neighbours went to work in Saudi leaving their late teenage kids behind and it became a nightmare. At the time there was a trend amongst this age for small motorbikes and the (what I call pyscobilly) look. Friday night was like being in Croydon or Bromley with gangs of youths walking about after the pubs shut looking for trouble. We even had a party which was crashed ending up in bottles being thrown and worse being used as hand held weapons. This was all beyond myself and friends, but the police seemed to suggest it was a normal Saturday night. You can imagine the relief when the 'for sale' sign went up. Perhaps the 'dispute' I am speaking about will only end when one party moves on.

Clearly not going to say much about the situation and that it is far enough away that those involved will not see the thread. Vextatious complaints. Harassment. Nasty. Hmm, the same can be said about pubs, particularly on a Sunday. But then again if the families bring in the business. So a few comments - partly from a position of strength having more grown up kids. We all think that we will be better parents than ours, but as you get older you see that our parents weren't so bad after all. We all think that we know best with regards to bringing kids up as opposed to other families. We don't. Trying to step back I think there is less control of young kids than say 10 years ago. Our parents would say the same about us no doubt. A difficult balance between encouaging creativity, individuality and confidence. Vs peeing other people off. Odd that in turn many of us are so risk adverse with letting our kids out as opposed to my generation (here's a few pence to buy sweets and you can keep the deposit on the drinks bottles that you are retuning). Each situation is different - we take our teenage kids out and they are reasonably well behaved and then you get a jobs worth telling you that it is curfew. Dulwich Woodhouse BTW. I suppose it is a case of knowing where best to go - certainly not Pizza Expreses in the Village, as you will not be able to hear yourself in the upstairs room. I can say the same about some of the trendy places for younger drinkers. But I do feel at times that I'd happily lecture someone and their kids when they are out of control and ruining an evening. Odd that in many other parts of Europe they seem to do it much better.

Some of this made me put my fingers down my throat. Not all I hasten to add. And this section isn't just for taking the piss - some light hearted comments and some proper debate. Going off at a tangent and conversations between small groups who know each other is a bit rubbish. Some people may take themselves a bit seriously and at times some of the most pompous comments. Oh you have to go further afield eg Blyth Hill Tavern Forest Hill (and some odds and sods on the main drag there too) Catford Con club Rye Hotel -just the right side of cool and trendy Gowlett - ditto Chandos - just because it looks frightening General Napier - the last side street pub in the world and I don't know how it keeps going Ivy - great community pub, great entertainment, poor service..... 2. The Goose is Out - folk at the Ivy, and now their sing along moved into Peckham after being turfed out by East Dulwich Venues 3. The East Dulwich Cabaret. Sadly turfed out years ago, and recently closed for good after quarter of a century many of the recent years in nearby exile 4. Famous people - lots of luvvies and arties, many used to appear at the now lamented EDC 5. The quiz at the Crystal Palace Tavern. Oh dear, again turfed out and now gastro'd the pub too 6. The Cheese Block 7. Peckham 5 - cheapest independent cinema in London 8. The hills of Lewisham - Blythe, One Tree, Horniman, Sydenham, Hilly Fields, Telegraph Hill 9. Green Chain Walk 10. The Cemeteries of Southwark and Lewisham - Nunhead but others too 11. Moor Park/ Libretto butchers and his eclectic cars 12. Disused railways 13. Some, but not all, of the microbreweries 14. Closed put walk on the Dulwich estate 15. Open House, and particularly Open Artists weekends 16. Best cider is the home made stuff from One Tree Hill allotments. My usual method was a cheap ticket from East Croydon but with the Oyster connectivity no longer worth the effort of doing it in stages. But my dear reader lots of engineering works currently on the line on Sunday so do avoid flying on that day.

Total bollox. It may sound like an academic treatise but you are talking out of your rrrrssss - 'the preserve of the fit and the foolhardy' what utter tosh. Cycled for 28 years in London as it is the quickest way from A to B for most of my journeys. Readily jumped lights for years for a mixture of reasons - saving time, pointless lights, some belief of morale highground, and general immaturity. Do much less nowadays as I am influenced by some of the arguments, this is nudge in action (if I come across others stopped at lights I am less likely to jump them), and greater maturity/responsibility. Spend an hour at the ligths by Peckham Rye and East Dulwich Road and count how many drivers run the lights. And then come back with your argument. Two wrongs don't make a right but have some bally consistency in your argument. If you want a proper debate let's talk about cutting emissions (carbon and pollution) and what cycling can or cannot provide. It wont be any help if all you do is increase congestion (Elephant and Castle is no safer and my journey times are longer, let alone all the peed off drivers and bus passengers). Difficulty with this thread as posts such as the ones above make me think that all residents of SE22 are pompous and self important. Of course you are not. Perhaps join us in our cycling revolution. And go to Copenhagen for your summer holiday.

Very excited, ?5.80 off peak zone 3, 9.20 peak. Cheap option used to be Oyster to Croydon then advance on Southern (not Thameslink). This seems much easier, and nicer to post a good news story rather than my woes of the Elephant and Castle and being bemused by the cyclist haters.
