The title of this thread and your commments are libellous and if I was a thieving Southwark Council Scum Councillor or thieving Southwark scum senior official (assuming that you are aiming your remarks at this whole layer of local government) I may may be tempted to take some action against the unimaginative and poorly informed posting. Have you tried talking to one of your thieving scum councillor about this? Are you not tempted to stand against the thieving scum, in a party that is not thieving scum (if they exist) or set up your own party 'the non-theiving scum'. Nothing like a good rant (I have plenty of them) but try to be a bit more reasonable in your acusations. Here is my favourite one. Dear Southwark Council, you did a lovely job of pedestrianising Rye Lane, but the bus lane is too narrow and buses keep mounting the cycle lane and destroying the curb. Can you please work with TfL and redesign the layout rather than wasting our Council Tax simply lobbing in tarmac that gets removed a couple of days later into the damage. Oh I seem to have already raised this on this forum, writing to both Southwark Council, and to TfL and then using Freedom of Information requests when I thought that they were not responding. I may have also used their complaints process too. Damn democracy and democratic accountability.

Sweaty Betty - the final nail in the gentrification coffin?
malumbu replied to Louisa's topic in The Lounge
I really liked Grace and Favour when it was a cafe. Back in the late 90s and early 00s it was a treat coming to North cross Road and using the slightly off-beat cafes there. Shocked at what is has become but hey-ho rarely go there nowawdays in any case and quite like the plant stall (and family like the popcorn). I also liked the salvage place but rarely bought things due to the cost and now seen its gone. And the charity shops are good. And the Cheese Block (as long as you set a limit on your spending). And that basement place that does music. And from the early 80s the dodgy tailor that sold Levis and kept porn mags. But no LL carpets. Not really sure of the point of my post. -
Not taken a lot of notice. A choice between a 'professional geezer' and a 'pleasant toff'. The latter isn't as bright or should I say devious as BJ. SK's comments on a review of security in the capital was plain bollocks. We already have a highly efficient set of agencies assessing risk and putting soft and hard measures in place that has helped avoid mass casualty attacks - you cannot eliminate them. He should have been congratulating the agencies, saying that we will build on this, and his focus should be community cohesion The comment on "northerners" being included in our diverse community was just silly. Obviously responding to Millwall's Harry the Dog's views from the mid 70s (we like other working class teams. Apart from Northerners) TfL funding is going to be a massive issue but to be fair he may not know all the details. But hey, I am picking on his because he was a bit annoying, and these are areas I am well informed. He cannot compete with Boris on the annoying front, or Ken (the great working class hero?) on sheer stupidity

And I know it kinda lingers

'Mate' of mine is has been a green councilor, and stood for virtually every national election for the last few years. He is now campaigning for Brexit. Totally confused me as a major plus of the EU is on the environment. But I think that Hitler was pro green, pro vegetarian and pro Jewish homeland. I am probably confused. This doesn't really explain http://green-leaves.org/

Off thread but it used to amuse me when I used to fly Finnair (thinair) And older readers may remember Danair (nothing to do with Denmark) who were christened 'Dan Dare' as it was always and adventure Then there was the lovely sounding Debonair who were one of the first budget airlines (with Ryanair and Easyjet) - most have only heard of the latter two as they went bust fairly swiftly

OK so I have been thinking. I went to most of my matches between 71 and 82. I saw the rise in violence, the deterioration of the game, falling attendances, crumbling stadiums etc. I started to go just after the Ibrox disaster. I saw more crash barriers go up on the terracing, and capacities redueced on safety grounds As attendances started to drop more seating was put in to maintain income, some of this being at the rear of the away terrace (eg Villa Park and Hillsbourough). And then the fences went up. And then the pens stated to appear. So once you had banks of away terracing that was unconstrained and people were not boxed in. The fences were uncessary as most got onto the pitch during a match to get away from the bother not cause it. There seemed to be more aggro once the pens went up than before as it got more tribal. So to 1980 when I was at a once famous midlands ground. The away terracing had held held 15 - 20 thousand. Now redueced to 6000 at the front standing, and a similar number of seats upstairs. We got into the terracing, it was rather packed. So the stewards/police opened the gates at the front and a number of us were walked round the pitch into the less busy corners. Easy. You may see where I am coming from. Fast forward to 89. Reduced capacity in the away terracing. Fences. Pens. Not the midlands ground but one in South Yorkshire. So at the time, and ever since I wondered why they didn't just simply manage the crowd as I had experienced in 1980. I put the blame down to stadium design and stewarding. But - having been to many matches - I also believed that people did arrive late, some without tickets, many drunk. Because I had seen all of this many times. And there was still the...dare I say... coonection with Heysel. So I am stunned that in deed this was all fabrication. Questioning myself for my attitude at the time until now and how the powers that be (and Thatcher hated football and Liverpool), the establishment, the media and uncle Tom Cobbley had continued to spin and propogate this lie.

You think that you have problems? I've been waiting 20 years to be served at the Moore Park Hotel https://whatpub.com/pubs/SEL/11210/moore-park-hotel-forest-hill - just found out that is no longer serves alcohol A few years ago I thought that I'd try the Dulwich Woodhouse. I pushed the front door, knocked at it, but it wouldn't be opened. There were people in there laughing and staring but no b would let me in (assume that it must be a bunch of freemasons). In desparation I have gone to the Grove Tavern. Some nice outdoor seating but most unwelcoming and you have to bring your own booze. So the Dog is in good company.

Nice modest post by the way. I was going to be slighty provocative but thought better of it when I saw this. It would be great for Leicester to win the title, but must be painfull when you have your best team for 55 years, full of Englsh players, and have to come across a once in a 100 years situation. I'd be more grumpy about this http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/17973141 although it is now in bad taste to speculate futher.

As a nation we talk about supporting the small shops and the high street. But we don't. We are all hypocrites -
Ok can someone explain things to me please. For 100 of years there was anti-semitism across much of Europe. Shakespeare made fun of the Jewish money lender. This play was one of our course books at school. From my understanding in Britain in good times the monarchy were happy to use Jewish money when it was needed, then blamed the samme people when times were bad. Then things got pretty horrid in parts of Eastern Europe, Russia and Germany. Clearly very horrid. Then Britain made a hash up of the State of Palestine. Then the US got seriously involved. And oil prices went through the roof. And then they choose sides between the arab countries they wanted to be friends with to guarantee the flow of oil and pissed off the rest. And then we all got involved in the various messes of Libya, Egypt, Iraq and Syria. And Iran and Turkey retain massive geopolitical influence. And the US and their allies remain close to Israel. It all sound like a friggin mess. As is Russia, Africa, SE Asia, and many of the other places the west/East intervenes in. So I don't hate anyone. Well apart from Bono, but that is trivialising things. What is wrong with talking about Israel's involvement in all of this? From what I understand there are a spectrum of opinions there too. Did spend a week or so there in twenty years ago but views from that wont help this thread. I also expect Ken is bloody minded and wont do the decent thing and acknowledge when he has overstepped the mark. Can someone explain things simply please?

We have the right to withdraw our labour. I've done it for one day in my career. That was hard fought for and whatever you think of 'our unions' (they are not 'the' union) think back to some of the terrible working conditions 100 years ago that organised workers managed to change. Before that I lobbied my MP who said that all governments, including the union hating Maggie, wanted a negotiated settlement and expected both sides to compromise. How has this goverment gone beyond the stance of Thatcher and imposed solutions. Did the ellectorate give them this mandate?

I know that East Dulwich is devoid of pubs but why chose the Fox (and Hounds) When I lived off Kirkdate many moons ago we had a cluster of nice pubs - the (Old) Greyhound, the Fox and Hounds, the Woodman that has morphed into an estate agents, the Bricklayers. Two have gone, the Fox is just very generic, last time I went into the Brick it was an almost empty fighting pub. We then had the two crim's pubs on Wells Park (both gone) before going up the hill to the Dulwich Woodhouse (RIP). You'll have to go to the Dolphin at the bottom, or the pop up bar near by, for a decent atmosphere. Clearly nothing to do with Brexit but as you lot are discussing the Eurovision Song Contest then I thnk that I can digress too.

Got a scam call the other day saying my name, very cheery, and that they were representing my claim for a fictious accident. I said, "you sound like an intelligent person, do me and you a favour and get a job of value to you and society" Phone went dead but please start challenging the call centres. We have lots more fun conversations in the household with call centres "who are you, how do you have my details, and why are you calling me", but on this occsasion I could judge the age and the intelligence and hope that it a few more of us did this the penny would drop. Now I am not going to get into a rant about capitalism - "scammers, greedy intelligent people riping off greedy stupid people". But many moons ago a colleague wanted to make some extra money woring for a call centre. They were contacting people who had put a tick in the box about being contacted about a product. The grief she got when she wasn't cold calling. That was out of order and she left after one evening. But this lot above. Please do in the most articulate way tell them that they are immoral and essentially criminals so use their intelligence to do some good.

This was more of a shock than Bowie, Lemmy, Victoria Wood and no doubt others. A loss of such creative talent.

Ask at all the shops, bars and restaurants on LL. The French House may be your best bet or Le Chardon.

Where is the populist outcry against tax dodging Jeremy Corbyn ?
malumbu replied to Mick Mac's topic in The Lounge
God this is getting desparate. There is no real dirt on either of them and if anything the issue and disclosure has increased the profile and spurred the government into action. My word the Telegraph having a go at a Labour leader> You'll have the Guardian having a go at the tories next.... I don't even know why I am bothered to read the thread or post a reply. -

I've been to New Zealand. Very pretty but boring And West Coast of Canada. Very pretty but boring. And the two countries are are often sited as doing wonderfully well trading with EU but not part of it. Norway and Switzerland. Guess what? Yes, very pretty but boring.

The pubs. All been ruined. You have to go to Forest Hill or Nunhead instead. -
pourquoi sommes-nous si ?troit d'esprit? In honour of the 9 other people I went skiing with who wouldn't utter a word of French, but were quite happy to complain about them Malumbu "Pourquoi pensez- vous partez en vacances en France?" PS don't take me on in French, I am embarassingly poor but I do try.

Have you ever taken a company to the small claims court?
malumbu replied to Alan Medic's topic in The Lounge
Oh yes A membership club (they settled out of court) A carpet shop (they didn't contest and paid the claim) And when I get round to it the (in my humble opion) evil Dixons Group. County Court is supposed to be a simple low cost option of seeking redress and it shouldn't be advantageous or otherwise to pay for legal representation. You have some pretty good advice. The membership club was in Leicester and if they had any sense they would have requested the hearing there. Which would have been heavily in their advantage as for the sum I was claiming it wasn't worth a day off work and the travel costs. Instead it was they who had to face these costs and therefore settled before the hearing. I'd rather not go through all the hassle and even when you are successful you still may have to enforce the claim which can be a pain, debt recovery etc. -

I've obviously slept through all of this. I catch hold of the headlines on the telly and radio news and dip into the BBC website. It didn't appear to be front page headlines. I to do my own accounts and probably cock them up every year. I round some stuff up and don't know which tax year some of my investments are paying interest in - Statement in February but paid in May. I've got a trivial amount in some daft funds that a supposed ISA (he only recommended the in-house products) and a small amount in some shares that I didn't vote for (although I am not that precious to give them away) and I should imagine with some rounding errors I am up or down about a tenner. I think that this is bugger all, that this will not lead to economic recession or civil unrest and I will not face a HMRC snatch squad. I imagine that Corbyn's finances and his free time to complete his accounts are in a similar state of mine. I am sure that there are many of you out there who legally know how to minimise your tax with much larger incomes that me. Is this really a story? -
I'm one of the many who will vote one way or another irrespective of the debate. I have lived and breathed Europe for most of my adult life. I dip in occasionally to threads and debates to skim the more intellectual argument and get an appreciation of the plain daft. I've not seen anyone talk about distrusting Jonny foreigner. Beyond concerns over immigration. I feel more in common with many of the Europeans that I work with, deal with professionally and just bump into in leisrure than some in this country including a few in what I would hope to be one of the more enlightened parts. Clearly I tend to mix with Europeans broadly in my same socio economic group and I am sure that there are many that I would have nothing in common with. I almost feel like apologising for some of the small minded, outdated and isolationist views of some from our bit of the British Isles. Dowtnon Abbey is a work of fiction by the way, it was not a eutopia between before the first world war and between the wars and even if it was we could never recreate this. So I like being in Europe vs I don't like Europeans and I truly believe in Julain Fellows view of Blighty. (And this is not a US love the flag of leave it conversation, I am happy to be here warts and all)
