Ah, used to buy lots of stuff from the nice lady on NCR but now do kids footy on Saturday mornings. Perhaps should start using it again as long as not persuaded to impulse buy from the Cheese Block and spend all my money.

Been a veggie for a long long time. Occasionally you want to get something out of the freezer or fridge and simply put it under the grill/in the oven. It seems like all the main supermarkets have colluded to sell stuff that is either bland, totally over flavoured, or in one case just bizarre. Sure that there used to be some stuff that was half reasonable. I used to buy some Quorn products, not because I wanted a meat substitute, but it had a bit of texture. They seeemed to have reformulated it a couple of years ago into some slime (yes I know it is a distant relative of athletes foot). The Linda McCartney stuff was always horrid. I've just chucked some pretty tasteless stuff away. Without telling me how to cook(because I can) any suggestions out there?

Return to big government (parking fines and other issues)
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
This is what I most dislike about this forum, start a serious conversation about a subject and it gets hijacked. Worse still giving some opportunity for someone to express vitriol about cyclists (yawn). I'll start a thread on Rye Lane should I get anything interesting back from Southwark. -
I used to make emulsion once. Peas easy. Mind you you have to get hold of a ball mill to grind down the pigment to the correct size, said pigment and resin. Generally you get what you pay for. More dosh = a better pigment. I've also made fireworks, but don't recommend that as it is illegal without a Home Office license. IT was a long time ago. You can play "What's my Line"

If someone comes cold calling at your door and tells you that they are carrying out a survey and asks you to take your clothes off, beware. Chances are that they are not really carrying out a survey, but simply want to see you naked. I was almost caught out once. And I didn't even have to go to my 27 year old copy of Viz for that good bit of advice!

Return to big government (parking fines and other issues)

They mount the bike lane causing damage to the curb and surface. Southwark lob some tarmac in. A week later this has been flattened. A shame after all the work done on the pedestrianised area. Not sure if they do this because (a) their lane is too narrow (b) giving space to vehicles parked I think illegally on the opposite pavement © Poor driving. Probably all three. -
experiences of cargiant please? are they cowboys?
malumbu replied to hellosailor's topic in The Lounge
It's capitalism. Things were much better in the old USSR. Cars were horrid, we couldn't afford them but they always started even on the coldest days. Bit like tripadvisor, have your expectations, ignore the best and worst reviews and then make your mind up. We used it to check out cars, cheap if a little battered, but didn't fancy buying anything without a test run. -
Return to big government (parking fines and other issues)
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Good post. I've scanned through the recent threads and found ones with interesting titles yet sweet FA of content. Quality not quantity on this one. Big issues are clearly more important so even more of a case of why Dave messes with stuff that is a local matter. He and perhaps the last lot don't want a war on motorist which gives many of you out there a carte blanche to do what you like. If you are running a red light, parking on doubles or whatever more fool you and you deserve what you get. Sadly it is easier to target other misdemeanours and the one that has amused me is potential fines for leaving your bin on the pavement. Back to my green inking habit, Dave's anoucement at least got me to put pen to paper and FOI Southwark about parking enforcement and my other sad obsession, buses damaging the pavement on Rye Lane. Oh and cars with bull bars but that is for another day and a policing issue not Southwark. Now if Dave had zero tolerance on cars with bull bars, and those drivers using mobiles, and they were all crunched (cars not the drivers) he would get my vote. Let's see what Ed has to say. My other one would be all people smoking on cross channel ferries get thrown into the sea. Nigel. -
This thread is a no brainer. If they are doing illegal things report them to the police If they are making excessive noise report to Environmental Health If they aren't doing either, speak to your local coucillor about what can or can't be done.

Whilst not a fan of Dave and Nick, I am of the localism agenda. The Big Soceiety was already there, but the assumption that volunteers could take over services was flawed. I volunteer so have some appreciation. What does pee me off is after all the right noises, government then has to interfere/intervene. Local refuse collection - leave that to the local authority. People whinge about two weekly bin collections? Tough, moan to your councillor. Now we are getting more vote winning Daily Mail nonsense with government deciding that no enforcement can be taken for ten minutes after the parking meter has run out. This may be sensible, proportionate and pragmatic, but let the local authority decide. Pah! By all means issue best practice, work with the Local Government Association but please stop this popularist nonsense. And no more mobile cameras? The one was by the junction between the Rye and East Dulwich Road because so many people ran the red light. On the contary feel that the cops should do more to enforce road traffic and vehicle violations (and never thought I'd say this bikes without lights) rather than a total abication of responsibility. The ten minutes free parking of course does not apply to Rye Lane, where I've never seen any enforcement. Rather than whinge about this I am now going green ink instead and send some FOI requests to Southwark.

Hand and Shears is a great pub, apart from the beer which is not great. Shame. With all the talk about the Rake you have two terrific ale houses near by, the Market Porter, which has loads of (non craft) ales on, and difficult to get in as it is so popular. And the Royal Oak in Borough, probably the only decent Harveys in London, and prices always fully displayed. A walk over to Charing Cross, and whilst the Harp will never be the same since Fullers took it on, it will still be ok. Funnily enough the Old Mitre has improved since Fullers took it off the evil Greene King Finally the Salisbury is worth visiting, particularly for its Gin Palace glitz. I've mentioned a number of pubs, all with proper beer off the pump, and I doubt if any of them will charge much over ?4 a pint. Just come back from the best pub in the world, the Blythe, where not only was the beer good but so was the craic. I think I have been to about half of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_award-winning_pubs_in_London Not included is the club of the year, the Leyton Orient FC club http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/9016414.LEYTON___Special__Orient_supporters_club_wins_best_ale/

See thread on most expensive pint ever

I understand that there can be a premium on beer, wine or any commodity. Or that upmarket placers charge more On the odd occasion the Rake expecting to be shafted I am pleasantly surprised that the have a reasonably priced ale on. In my pub we have that fizzy cold nonsense that the hipsters drink but we have the prices properly displayed, I have told the management we have too many beers on. I was just stunned that a 'normal' looking tap would have such a high price tag. Anyway some good postings

It was about 6%. I of course understand that you pay a premium for Belgium Trappists beers etc at 8 or 9% which you sip rather than glug. I'll ignore the childish comment beyond the obvious (Wetherspoons)

Had an argument tonight with the bar staff at the Rose pub close to Vauxhall Bridge. Nay my good barman, you have keyed in a pint rather than a half. No dear sur, this really is ?9.80 a pint. "You should have consulted the menu and you would have seen this" It was for a blonde beer on tap. My regular readers will understand that I don't go for all this new-fangled beer but even some of the 'craft' (whatever that means) beer sold at your trendy places wont reach these prices. I left without paying, telling them by law they had to have prices prominantly displayed. Sadly I found out that these regs have been watered down so no moaning to Southwark Trading Standards for me. Can anyone beat ?9.80 for a beer on tap? I think that you pay these sort of prices in basement bars in Soho, but a hostess (or host) is usually thrown in. In the UK please, although even in Norway I imagine that you would be pushed to pay so much.

He made the request to the station/train operators within 40 days and was fobbed off that the cameras were not functional (he was arrested in part based on these cameras). We've got the ICO stuff so will persue this angle. Thanks to all.

A mate got arrested some time ago. It didn't go to court and was his word against the other party. He tried to get hold of the CCTV coverage but there were various 'reasons' why he couldn't have it. He's been down various legal avenues, written to his MP etc. It is not a big enough case for anyone to take it on pro bono. I've not been able to find any organisations that can help. Any suggestions out there? You have 40 days to request CCTV but if it is connected to a possible criminal case it will not be shared. To be honest he needs to let it go, but no harm in asking the virtual community. I am sure most of us have been wrongfully arrested one time or another.

OK I've calmed down now. Both of my boys' teams got 2-2 draws yesterday, although the park match was far more entertaining. Must make an effort to get to DHFC more often. Anyway back to my earlier comments but changing sport. I actually like going to Wimbledon (tennis), but remember not so many years ago sitting behind a couple of gents checking their e-mails on their Blackberries (this was in a world before i phones, well before they were universal) whilst the tennis match was on and being quite surprised. Fast forward this to Friday, when I was at Old Colfeans near Blackheath whilst the rugger was on. I was playing badminton but could hear the roars from the lounge as England came back to beat Wales. I checked the score occasionally and it was a rowdy if good natured audience, but again imagine my surprise to see a handful glued to their i-phones whilst the match was on. Doing what?? And not kids.

You really are a bunch of wankers You Jonny come lately Arse fans (this is not necessarily aimed at the good denizens of ED). Oh yah, we are really should get rid of Wenger, he has only given us top 4 football for half a generation and presided over a financially lucrative team, without dodgy money from the gulf or Russia. Fack me, I could only dream of this. You make even the Jonny come lately Chelski fans look good. Posh people, where were you when Arse were medioccre for long patches of the 70s, 80s and 90s Posted in response to a posh git calling 606 earlier. Did you even go to the match? Not in response to any postings here. Fack off back to rugby or rollerball or wherever Give us back our game. PS I'll be down in the park coaching kids football tomorrow.

I will never agree with hunting animals for sport.... However I'd happily shoot grey squirrels and some of the neighbours' cats with an air pistol (too many of both). Well in my dreams anyway. And what ever it is does the runny shits in our front garden..... We got a squirrel caught in a squirrel proof bird feeder last year. The thing was apoplectic. As they are pests you are supposed to dispose of them. This poor townie after trying to give it a heart attack with a cat scarer ended up prising open the feeder to let it free (and managing to avoid getting my fingers bitten off). I am such a light weight.

Thanks for the excellent suggestions and the further recommendations for the Bridge House - despite the seats! Went to the White Bear years ago when a friend of a friend did a production and similarly the Blue Elephant more recently. When I lived out in the sticks we regularly used to see am dram - usually a Stoppard or similar play and it was always entertaining. With that in mind in the last century I went to West Norwood Theatre, which I understand they are always trying to save http://www.southlondontheatre.co.uk/newSLT/ Also an odd theatre under the arches at Waterloo station.

Oh and to my shame not seen any theatre at my pub (the Ivy) but will get round to doing this one day. Been there plenty of other times.
