  1. I will never agree with hunting animals for sport.... However I'd happily shoot grey squirrels and some of the neighbours' cats with an air pistol (too many of both). Well in my dreams anyway. And what ever it is does the runny shits in our front garden..... We got a squirrel caught in a squirrel proof bird feeder last year. The thing was apoplectic. As they are pests you are supposed to dispose of them. This poor townie after trying to give it a heart attack with a cat scarer ended up prising open the feeder to let it free (and managing to avoid getting my fingers bitten off). I am such a light weight.
  2. Thanks for the excellent suggestions and the further recommendations for the Bridge House - despite the seats! Went to the White Bear years ago when a friend of a friend did a production and similarly the Blue Elephant more recently. When I lived out in the sticks we regularly used to see am dram - usually a Stoppard or similar play and it was always entertaining. With that in mind in the last century I went to West Norwood Theatre, which I understand they are always trying to save http://www.southlondontheatre.co.uk/newSLT/ Also an odd theatre under the arches at Waterloo station.
  3. Oh and to my shame not seen any theatre at my pub (the Ivy) but will get round to doing this one day. Been there plenty of other times.
  4. Went to the Bridge House in Penge on Monday which has a small (40 seater) theatre upstairs. Thoroughly recommend the perfomance of 'It's a wonderful life' Still tickets for Sat and Sunday https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/69219 Sadly, even though I am on the mailing list, only made it to the Brockley Jack once in my life and never seen theatre at EDT or the Hob. A zillon years ago went to the Latchmere. Be interested in views of others.
  5. Celia Hammond is a bit of an oddball, but good point to contact the rescue centre Surely others most have some experience with peeing cats?
  6. Most of the time - but not all. Well at least when they have been neuteured the place doesn't smell of tom cat.
  7. All domestic lager is shite. I am not sure why the stuff made in its country of origin tastes better, in particular when you are in the country of origin. Is that just a change of perception? Visited a warehouse today in Southampton where they keep all the stuff for the cruise liners. They told us that they do not take on anything local - everything is sourced nationally or intenationally. Imagagine my excitement when I saw pallets of Carlsberg. So I spend ?10 grand on a world cruise and what do they give me? Carlsberg? It's in the John Smiths smoothflow territory. I hasten to add this will have been produced in some beer factory in Northampton not bottled on the thighs of Danish maidens. Anyway, haven't got a clue what this thread is about but the Grove was a lovey pub till its make over ten or more years ago, and I saw the Italy England match there in 97/8 when we qualified for the World Cup.
  8. Yes I know my syntax is wrong. Plenty of stuff of internet - http://www.catsofaustralia.com/cat-stress.htm Yes it is a two cat household = stress Yes he gets bullied by other cats - too many bally cats in the ares What works with you catpeople?
  9. Was fooled into taking two rescue cats from Celia Hammond. Both neutered. One is a bit anxious and sprays on furniture doing ????? of damage. We plug stuff in to calm them down, and other remedies. It doesn't change. We've had them four years. Solutions ? Drowing (thinking of the telly programme 'Intruders' last night) Jesting of course Return him to Celia Hammond Continue with bits of hardboard against various pieces of furniture to protect them. Irony is that I have never been fond of cats. Preferred the hamsters which are much easier to deal with. But was worn down by the kids. And I can live with the scratching damage to the carpet, the occasional present of a dead, nearly dead, alive bird or mouse. Serious suggestions please. Ta
  10. The use of adjectives as adverbs Eg quick, or fast. Relative terms. Now we are saying "John moves more quickly" "This is happening more slowly" When it should be "John is faster" and "this is happening slower" Or my favourite - the economy is growing less quickly than expected shd be the economy is growing slower than expected.
  11. I came home one night a bit squiffy and got my self a beer from the fridge. Good thing that I had made a mistake in buying Blue Becks. I was so impressed that I thought in the morning that I should try a bottle sober. It was truly horrid. So what to do with those mistakenly purchased bottles. I took them on the opening of the new London Overground line, passed a few around and hoped that someone would try to arrest me for illegally drinking beer on the network. That's about as exciting as it gets zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  12. I've not found any decent low/non alcoholic beer. In part no doubt because of the process of removing the alcohol. Erdinger was OK but probably only as a one-off. When I was in India yonks ago we hardly drank as the beer in most states was disgusting, in part because of the preservative glycol (or whatever), it normally came in a brown paper bag which made you feel like a wino, and was very expensive compared to the cost of living. We lived off fizzy mineral water/soda water with lime juice or lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar. Brilliant. This also reflects of course the climate - not so nice on a wet bank holiday Monday For a treat mango lassi - but not something you could order in the pub. I also drink a pint of soda water with a bottle of grapefruit juice when stopping off cycling - grapefruit juice makes it not too sweet. Good luck
  13. coaches also go from Stratford if you can get there. In theory three night buses will do it.
  14. Blythe Hill Tavern.
  15. This is a community forum. Why would anyone who wants to buy a place but not live here want to engage on this site. There are no doubt forums where property investors discuss the hottest new locations. And telly programmes.
  16. So I understand that freedom of expression is good and censorship is bad. This is why I gave up on another forum just up the road. But flip me. What is the point of starting threads if many of you lot just go off on some childish banter. I start a thread about exciting journeys interested in some eclectic experiences. Oh no, someone has to say Penge, and that sounds like minge. Ho flippin ho. Three posts about journeys, 30 posts about minge. I ask about my sister's 40th present, in all innocence. But how long does is take for someone to suggest a sex toy. Oh I have just wet myself that was just too amusing. I try to gauge the age and background of the audience. Some sound actually quite mature and sensible. Not all from the Nuts, Oasis get your boobs out for the lads, nonsense. Really not sure any more. Someone inspire me please.
  17. ?50 - ?100 She doesn't live in a Bohemian area such as ED, and has a fairly conventional lifestyle - two kids under 10, semi, garden etc etc. I'm thinking of theatre vouchers. I could try "I want one of those dot com" I am not doing a red letter day. Or Lush vouchers.
  18. My friend Everard. 25 years later was Mr Grayson really talking about a friend who was ever hard?? Such innocent days. Or probably not.
  19. I've posted about my trip to Guyana/Brazil, and also to Bangalore, to see the World Cup and and England test match, respectively. I've done a few other mad things, but now indulged myself enough. Whilst not a competition it would be fun to hear others' crazy adventures. It doesn't have to be sports related.
  20. Thanks guys. Came to around ?2.2 k including a rather expensive flight to a waterfalls in Guyana and probably being overcharged in the jungle. The original idea of doing overland from Guyana proved impossible. In retrospect would have been nice to come back via French Guiana or better still Guam. I've just realised how fleeced I was changing money... I am whispering this, but I actually enjoyed seeing England play in Bangalore 12 years ago more fun - cheap flight to Goa, a couple of days in Hampi, onto Mysore then back to Bangalore. Whole thing cost less than a grand in today's money, and I spend about a third of the time travelling. I said bye bye to the barmy army in a pub, "I am going home now". Rickshaw to hotel. Hotel to bus station. Overnight bus. Panicked a little and got of bus early to get another Rickshaw to the airport. Flight back. Train from Gatwick to East Croydon, then to Norwood Juntion and a late taxi home. Over 24 hours later. Now there is just popping home from the pub.
  21. My word. I start a thread about Dulwich Yummy Mummies (and daddies)and get pushed from pillar tp post (actually that is quite witty). I even try to make jokes at my own expense and nobody on this site cracks a smile. Yet something a bit more provocative just ends up in the normal nonsense. I assume that full time mums are a sign of the change in socio-economic status as the Dulwich Village ripples spread out - coming up the hill too. I don't know many myself and few fit into the stereotype of ladies wot lunch. Why did the cafe close down opposite the Rye BTW?
  22. Great rounds 1 and 2 Pretty dreadful quarters and semis (the Brazil Germany match was only special due to the score). Surprisingly great Final My views are influenced by 8 days in Manaus where I saw a rather dull Croatia match, and then a more classic USA Portttugal (note the very hard T). Yank fans were young, colledge educated, very postive (as was their team) and could show us a thing or two about dressing creatively for a match. A tad annoying at times.... The Aussies, Croatians and Colombians were similarly amiable. Some of the tail end of the English fans I met were still thugs but just very old thugs. Some had tried to pick fights with the yanks in the square, after picking fights with the Brazillians at the England/Itie game. Stadium was fab, if a bit over designed (and will be forever empty!). There was a buzz in the air, and always seemed to be some sort of excuse for a festival, but totally and utterly chaotic with near zero info for fans. Having been involved in London 2012 there were so many hoops that we had to go through with the IOC. I doubt whether Fifa had visited Manaus. The promised mass transport system was not never delivered and they seemed to be making up things as they went along. Accommodation was the pits (and I have stayed in plenty of downmarket accommodation) + massively inflated. No rioting and not sure how it compared with other venues and cities. Brazillains we met were great and I posed for many photos. The World Cup hardly affected the average person in Manaus and as a rainbow nation it is sad to see that most Brazillian fans were white. Not going to either Russia or Kuwait for obvious reasons. Germany 8 years ago had brilliant organisation and fair prices, but a totally different atmosphere. All done on the cheap, flying to Guyana and travelling in Brazil by coach (a very comfy coach too).
  23. Go to one of the volunteers centre eg http://www.volunteercentres.org.uk/ And also register on the do-it website -its brill www.do-it.org.uk Finally e-mail local businesses - you'll find government departments may be paricularly helpful.
  24. Without starting new thread, or trawling through this one, can someone explain in simple English why the early results show that 3/10 of those who voted, voted UKIP? Ie not the maths but in simple reasons why UKIP. They don't like Romanians. They are distancing themselves from BNP and the NF who don't like all immigrants I(not sure how many generations we are talking about here). Britain has one of the most prosperous economies, built in part on colonisation, globalisation (ie if it is cheaper to do it over there we will) and a competitive job market/those who are prepared not to do things through the books therefore cheap labour is seen to be good. I am sure that everyone who agrees with some of the xenophobic nonsense support all of this. Just a sentence of two, so I can get it. I don't get 'protest vote' vote for another fringe party if this is what you want to do or spoil your ballot paper. And as for the major parties, don't change your policies because of this result. Please. Actually Dave R seems to have said it all: As Loz said, when UKIP voters are asked what they think is important, Europe usually comes way down the list. UKIP have put the EU forward as a proxy for all the ills of the modern world [what about all the benefits?!], and invited a protest vote, which they have duly got. I don't think all UKIP candidates or voters are racist [hmm, threatened...], but I admit to struggling with stupid. It doesn't take much critical judgment to work out that UKIP don't have any credible policies and have a pretty high nutter count amongst both candidates and supporters, so voting for them seems kind of stupid to me.
  25. My word you lot are so precious. The one great thing about 'alternative comedy' (if I can give it a name) was being able to laugh at yourself. Clearly East Dulwich has a problem here. Gives me an idea for a thread.
