I hadn't followed this thread in recent posts, but was about to conclude that I had bought a British made Rega from Billy Vee Sound Systems in Lee. Found details in part by accident on line, should have just read the above recommendation, Anyway brilliant, enjoying my old vinyl again. Thanks all. And now gone up one further on this thread to find Billy Vee. Serendipity!

Even Jezzer can see common sense. Or maybe his lawyers! "I would like to say sorry, once again, to Oisin Tymon for the incident and its regrettable aftermath," "I want to reiterate that none of this was in any way his fault. "I would also like to make it clear that the abuse he has suffered since the incident is unwarranted and I am sorry too that he has had to go through that. "I am pleased that this matter is now resolved. Oisin was always a creatively exciting part of Top Gear and I wish him every success with his future projects." Mr Tymon's lawyers said the case had been settled but did not give details of the settlement. It is understood to be in excess of ?100,000, an amount to which both Clarkson and the BBC contributed.

It's a nice place. Glad that it has been recognised. Do I sense a little bit of jealousy from SE22. You have to go to Sydenham or Honor Oak (Querce) for Italian food Forest Hill (Blythe Hill Tavern) or Nunhead (Ivy) for pubs. And all you have is flat pack by design generic bars and eateries, where any character has been airbrushed over. Don't panic, but move fairly quickly.

The Kenny Burns comment was from a time when chants were generally less-malicious, but there was more violence. The exception was racism - it was a different world sadly. Now the chants can be far worse (Beckham in the 00s used to get some pretty disgusting ones, yet society is a lot less violent. Odd.

It was funny. He messed around with his wife. She left him. We sang about it. We didn't hate Kenny Burns. We sang it after they got back together. Don't take life too seriously.

Question I have is wtf we are having a referendum in the first place. It didn't bother me and it was only my mate Farage stirring things up that this happened. They had a really nice referendum in Ireland, with an even nicer outcome https://static-secure.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2015/5/18/1431950742563/c509c6a1-ab75-4367-8908-13f623eaf26a-bestSizeAvailable.jpeg That makes me feel good. Out one doesn't.

Ho ho - that amused me! But was worried about the side bar about dating Russian women. Clearly we need to leave the EU. Oh that is a separate thread.

Actually I've now changed my mind slightly. (1) Britain had an energy policy in the 50s and 60s and were leading the world. Sadly it was down hill from the late 70s onwards as we embraced the 'market' - that is the reason (a) we are still dependant in part on coal (as well as wasting so much natural gas) (b) we want the cheapest source of supply. Without researching I expect that the EU watered down some of the environmental regulations that would further discourage the use of this dirty evil stuff. Nobody who posts on this forum would ever want to work down a pit. (2) The EU outlawed methylene choloride paint strippers. I bought the last can ever on sale. And I have kept it for a precious time. Sadly it has coroded through the tin and all evapourated. And why was it banned? Because a few silly people died each year from aphixiation. Just have a label and say don't use it to clean old bath tubs unless you are working outside. Still wont change my mind though. The power of Russia - a spurious argument, we cowtowed with the yanks to use market economics as a lever to end communism. And what did we get - another evil single party state (with heaps of natural resources). Better tackled by a united EU rather than a sovereign state.

I thought that this was a thread about good Graffiti My faves were "Lets fick Thatcher in '89" on a wall in Loughbourough Junction. It was there for years and I wanted to add - the Howe and Hesser did it in 1990 Just down the road was NUM win. And we had 'Whatever happened to Slade" then followed "Whatever happened to Terry Waite" by the Oval, lost when they did the Bedser stand twenty years ago. http://s3.amazonaws.com/imgly_production/3525268/large.jpg

Had a shock on Friday when Farage walked into one of my faourite pubs, the Speaker in Westminster. Did I (a) get into debate with him (b) leave him in peace © have a discussion with my colleagues about the case for or against. The pub was full of the London metropolitan itellectual types that are hardly his core vote. Our group had a chat about what it would mean for us, and some rather unfounded talk about lowering the minimum working age (sending kids down the mines/mills), getting rid of health and safety legislation, and compulsory work place smoking (for all). I am trying to be a bit more informed and challenge some of my views on the econonic disaster leaving would result in. At the end of the day so many good things in terms of pay, rights, safety are down to the EU. And I want to be part of the big picture. I have no time for the views that we were a better country 50 years ago. We came out of the war leaner and fitter and all credit for that and had a head start on much of Europe in rebuilding. We facked all that up in the 50s and 60 with lack of ambition and innovation (probably not helped as we had our head in the sand). My level of patriotism goes as far as supporting my national sporting teams. Not a lot futher.

Good Stuff I was bought up on the Arts Cinema in the Aston Triangle, Bluecoat School in Liverpool and then totally spoiled by four art house screens in Oxford - the Pheonix (x2), Penultimate Picture Palace, and 'Not the Moulin Rouge'. Not as an undergraduate I hasten to add. -

It's even worse now they are doing works by the shopping centre which has narrowed access to one lane - traffic backing up to beyond Bricklayers Arms, and this is half term week FFS. Before I go on a tirade against TfL I'll wait to see the final outcome. Any delay to buses encourages people to switch back to their cars which of course defeats the whole purpose of the scheme. Cycle ride is longer and more dangerous. Ditto. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-35026096 -
Forced ventilation (could be pricey) Or dehumidifier - special offer at the moment. http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/diy/diy-accessories/de-humidifiers Used for my daughter's room as she didn't ventilate it. Older houses with no cavity in the wall will be more difficult. Always check that the sub floor ventilation (air bricks below the damp proof course) is not blocked. A draughty house tends not to be a damp house.

I couldn't quite get my head around Wire, and trying to get into GoF retrospectively was unrewarding. So many times I'd seen the Buff Medways advertised but for some reason never managed to get thyself over to N London. I saw the Fall so many times and then got pissed off with them. But I will return. First time I was so drunk (Glasgow) I slept through most of it. Talking of drinking the one great drunk gig I did in the (late) 80s was Fatima Mansions at the Grand Trouble is now I want bands on my doorstep. Let's see what others have to report

Imagine my embarrassment when I wrongly guessed a track was ATV (Alternative Television - SE London's best) but found out it was Billy Childish. On the plus side I found out that ATV has reformed and both they and Childish are bands that I have never seen but still want to. Which got me thinking about the pros and cons of seeing reformed bands (and those who never split). So a good experience of the Ruts DC, Buzzcocks are still kicking out good music, Penetration have about 55 mins of music, Mekons/Jon Langford is entertainingly dour. I made friends with the Cravats as I have one degree of separation but I can't be bothered to go to these punk weekenders as I am sure they would be tedious. The Damnned are as good or bad as ever but I have seen them this decade so will wait for their 50th anniversary. I think about some others - 999, Chelsea, the Lurkers and stuff but not sure I'd enjoy them. Tom Robinson is entertaining, it is a bit of a sing along, but his voice is going. I wont do the Stranglers and Hugh Cornwall always seems a little sad. TV Smith is great as he is doing his own singer songwriter stuff now. Magazine were perfect but boring as opposed to when I first saw them when they were rough but very exciting. Sorry Howard and Dave. I find 80s stuff more disappointing as it has generally not aged well. I am talking about the indie and some of the electronic stuff rather that the 80s pop star circuit/circus. No one can hate Kids in America, Heaven 17, The Human League or the Look of Love

What I didn't explain was that accelerating over the bumps throws the force forward effectively lifting the car. As a long term purveyor of speed bumps driving like this will be suitable for all vehicles except those with very low suspension, or very soft suspension, Hard suspension will have a jolt at most speeds. The only exception is Canonobie/Nehtherby Road due to the enormous size (even I get grumpy) and if you are going down hill you have to use the brake. Court Lane used to be daft but they have long since cut them down in size. The speed pimples eg Woood Vale which are supposed to cut down to 20mph are pointless. In my more boy racer days driving a Capri (they were well untrendy then) I'd occasionally drive late at night with two wheels on the pavement along Court Lane as this cushioned the blow from the then excessive bumps. Very anti-social of me and almost a quarter of a century later there are now too many parked cars to ever think about a repeat. Cycling down Urderhall just free wheeling you get up to 20mph hence my annoyance at the slow down accelerate behaviour

This place looks much cooler: http://www.deptfordcinema.org/buy-tickets/ Reminds me of my time when I arrived in London with loads of art house (and no doubt subsidised) cinemas including the one screen Ritzy, the Renoir, Screen on Baker Street and others And at last a return of cinema to LB of Lewisham -
Drive gently and avoid using the brakes. Back of the accelerator just before you get to the bump and then accelerate lightly over it. Repeat. You'll average 15 - 20 mph, enjoy the smoother ride, get there just as quick, and save considerably on fuel, and wear and tear. Now this is how 99% drive: Accelerate between the speed bumps. Bang the anchors on. Accerate between the speed bumps. Bang the anchors on. You'll average 15-20mph, you'll piss off cyclists who have to keep braking, you'll up your fuel use, accelerate the wear on your brake pads and discs, and tyres, and batter your suspension. Does this lecture sound familar? If so you must regularly drive down Underhill Road in the morning being followed by a cyclist who is telling you how to drive properly.

The trouble with some of you is that you don't understand the way our democracy/economy works. When I was a slip of a lad driving older cars I'd get pulled over once or twice a year. Now I see a few cars each night with dodgy things wrong with the vehicle or the way it is driven. Pretty low liklihood of them being stopped. Yes cyclists too. I'd also have pedestrians stopped for bad pedestrianising too. But then things changed, we wanted lower taxes, we/the powers that be wanted police to do other things. Apart from a few TfL funded police they no longer routinely stop cars any more. None of the main parties, in particular the one in power, want to 'demonise' the driver. The squeals that happen, inlcuding on this site (CPZs) when the authorities do things to deter bad practice by motorists. So if you want to change things become politically active, write letters, join a political party, run for councillor, orgainse petitions, whatever. That doesn't mean it is all fair. I try to take them on occasionally eg lack of parking enforcement on Rye Lane vs no discretion/overzealous enforcement for some other (minor) offences. PCSOs watching for cyclists on the North side of Lambeth Bridge yet ignoring the head to tail congestion on the other side. I have some influence on a professional level, yet even here too may of my colleagues will say "if only we did this" "if only we did that". If it aint going to win votes then it aint going to happen. Nowt wrong with raising injustices and debating them. Some of the quality of argument is great. Others threads are pants, or quickly dexcend into pants. I also get a lot of good tips and advice. I hope that some of you may be taking notice. Funnily enough I was at a meeting talking about enforcement and I thought that I'd count up my number of traffic offences and I think, includng parking, I got to over 15. That is over a long time and most of them in my earlier times. The youngsters would have been shocked. You'll be pleased that I am now a model citizen.

Wow, this thread jumps all over the shop. So - cars are dangerous. They crash into people and kill them. If they slow down people don't die. Pushbikes are less dangerous as they weigh about 1/20 of a car and therefore unless the pedestrian is unlucky will survive 999/1000. That doesn't excuse cyclists - data on cyclist/pedestrian accidents do no determine who is at fault, the majority will be on road not pavement. We have a society that worships speed and the right to go as fast as you want. 20mph speed limits will not change that overnight, it is a long game. Look back 20 years when most smokers thought that they had a right to share their smoke with everyone else, including the young. A different world now.

uncleglen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I've have never actually lived next door to anyone > in London who could communicate in English since > 1981! Is this a racist comment, on an observation that your SE London neighbours either can't pronounce their constanants (or cottannts) or are from posher areas and have plum in their mouths. Anyway onto relevant matters - majority of people I have asked for assistance including garage mechanics have helped. Some are selfish poos. Most fun thing was getting a group of builders to help lift an old Saab engine out by hand. Last time I asked for help with a push start two 18 year olds just ignored me. I told them what I thought (selfish barstools) and asked a couple of older blokes who were fine. Not sure if it is a generation thing. PM me if you want a handw with said car. A W Electrics in Catford are great, you'll have to pay call out of course. 25 Scrooby St 020 8690 7584 Bloke in the old stables other side of Moor Park Garage is also good. Haven't got his number on me.

Thanks and I will post updates if I think this is of value. My first house was ex-council in Abingdon. It was considered to be a rough area, but generally we were happy. Then the neighbours went to work in Saudi leaving their late teenage kids behind and it became a nightmare. At the time there was a trend amongst this age for small motorbikes and the (what I call pyscobilly) look. Friday night was like being in Croydon or Bromley with gangs of youths walking about after the pubs shut looking for trouble. We even had a party which was crashed ending up in bottles being thrown and worse being used as hand held weapons. This was all beyond myself and friends, but the police seemed to suggest it was a normal Saturday night. You can imagine the relief when the 'for sale' sign went up. Perhaps the 'dispute' I am speaking about will only end when one party moves on.
