Currys! Is there any customer protection in London/the UK?
malumbu replied to Sol's topic in The Lounge
WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG Statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act is that you have the opportunity to inspect the item. (problem is how long is appropriate). Which is effectively whay when you buy mail order they have a returns policy. From the Act itself: F33. . . Unless otherwise agreed, when the seller tenders delivery of goods to the buyer, he is bound on request to afford the buyer a reasonable opportunity of examining the goods for the purpose of ascertaining whether they are in conformity with the contract [ie is it what you expected, size, colour etc] Secondly: (see for eg /www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/sale-of-goods/understanding-the-sale-of-goods-act/your-rights/ When you buy goods you enter into a contract with the seller of those goods. Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 goods must be: 'as described', 'of satisfactory quality', and 'fit for purpose' ? this means both their everyday purpose, and also any specific purpose that you agreed with the seller (for example, if you specifically asked for a printer that would be compatible with your computer). Sadly sales people seem to know sweet FA about the SOGA, as do people on this forum. Better to ask if people have had good experience of a shop, not what to do when there is a problem. Apart from Malumbu who was a Consumer Protection professional. Go to OFT, or your Trading Standards Authority or Which for advice. This is half reasonable www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/kent/factsheets/FS1NEW%20nov07%20goods.pdf Then if the poorly trained counter staff don't help then ask to see the manager. Then contact the "Home Authority" (the Trading Standards Department)in the local authority area where the head office is. Contact the company, make a formal complaint, ask to see their dispute resolution procedure. If this failes sue the bustards. Worth spending the money at the Small Claims Court just for the hassle that it gives them. PM Malumbu and he will help you with the forms. The more people that do something about this the better for us all. Alternatively just shop at Waitrose, John Lewis, and move into the store and live there. -

I hate Ryanair for so many reasons, and far more than Easyjet. Firstly Easyjet don't usually fly from London East Coast airport - Stansted. But also because it takes me about 15 minutes to book with Easyjet, helped by the cookie remebering my details and being in their system. Ryanair takes about an hour as I am paranoid that I will do one thing wrong, and I come up in a cold sweat. Michael wotsitface is also a complete Souness, has no regard for consumer protection and national governments, and will happily wave two fingers at them whilst looking for more ways to rip us off. You get what you pay for, but really they don't have to go that far. I love the fact that you cannot e-mail them. PS as well as being a professional whinger I worked in consumer protection for a number of years. Not that knowledge of the Sale of Goods Act actually gets you anywhere.

So JP says at the end of the day all bands want to do is be successful and make money. Apart from HMHB says JP who did their 2 albumns and then split. Sadly of course they got back together but I enjoyed telling them this story when they first reunited in the late 80s. He also said that bands should compulsory split up after three albums. Apart from the Fall. Sadly Coldplay were still in Nappies when he gave this prophetic view.

Is is just me or is the service and connection rubbish. I get full signal strength but it fails to connect at times ON ALL MY MACHINES ie it is a systematic problem. It was fine before the router was replaced 18 months ago. Complaining via the web site just got a standard diagnostic testing response. Duh, I've done that thank you. Oh I thought that you had a run a cable from over the road, that's clearly where I have gone wrong. And plug it up my arse. Or maybe not. I really don't want to talk to thier techies where ever they are (could be any part of the globe). Very happy with my various call centres in Bangalore and Dehli when I am doing financial services but for anything technical they get quite rude. So I sent a detailed letter. Yes I purchased a stamp. I thought that a letter would be read. It wasn't. Same old patronising crap. So, tail between my legs, it looks like I am going back to BT 4 years later. PS very happy and somewhat surprised that T-mobile wrote off a ?200 overseas call that I didn't make. And similarly that the Financial Ombudsman sorted me out with Birmingham Midshires. So sometimes it works, and don't believe all the letters in the Guardian financial sections.

Ignore 1000s of backpackers on their way out, or returning from on their gap year or post-graduation year, or doing a round the world. Vietnam is sadly tourism by numbers nowadays (as in go through the list of tourist traps and book the tour). Surely Bali is now full. Islands to the East quieter. Sri Lanka is hopefully not quite yet over run by tourists - particularly if you go East or North India is big enough that you can escape the hords. Can't see the point of the Maldives.

Two bit of news. I have bites all over the bag of my legs from some late gardening last night. I turned over a plastic dustbin to find around 50 live snails. I disposed of them with boiling water. I also have some spare staples. And peppercorns.

Good point for Spurs on Saturday, may come in useful at the end of the season.

Watch out, you will become its pet. Cats quite often have several pet humans. I am not joking.

Its a shame that certain religions can't be more progressive. No doubt there was good reason once for doing this, as there was for avoiding pork, shellfish, and killing animals in certain ways. Not that we will solve this on the forum. Good discussion point though.

Good post Maxxi Just trying to provoke some discussion giggirl, nothing personal! I'll come back to this post when I have done something about it!

Well you lot are a load of help. Only one response, "get a life". Thanks a million!

Stone Roses, Heaton Park Oh know, that will be shit (fist time I have used the S word in a zillion posts, but it is appropriate on this occasion).

About ?700 for the Dulwich College place - used to be the Trevor Baylis Sports Centre, and more for their pavillion. Dunno how that compares with the other suggetion. But we are talking wedding reception territory in the above. A really cheap place is the Aquarius Golf Club in Peckham/nunhead. You will have to use their catering though. Or ?ks (that's thousands for a blow out at the conservatory at Horniman Park. Wasn't their a telly programme once about rich kids whose parents would spend 10s of thousands on their little treasures

Every time I look out of the rear windows, or go into my back gardens all I can see is blue light, as well as visual it feels imposing and over lookee. What I did not explain is these properties tower over the rest of the area being on high ground. I find it strange that the owners are quite happy to illuminate their own land, yet not bothered that a dozen other properties have this vista. So judging by your response giggirl I should in deed get a bank of lasers and retaliate! I will be implementing my own free right to do similar!

There are many reasons why modern life is rubbish. It may be due to men not routinely wearing ties and hats any more. My late father blamed it on the first world war where women started to be treated fairly in the work place. I personally blame it on supermarket bread. Up until 30 years ago there was not the technology for them to bring in semi-finished loaves to complete the job in store. You had to go to a real bakers. The rest is history. You can also correlate the increase in crime rate with margarine consumption

There seems to be a new trend in the upper parts of illuminating new developments at night. One of our neighbours rear elevation looks like a 1973 Genesis set with blue lights illuminating their garden evein in the early hours. It appears to be self indulgent nonsense but maybe not an issue for local council/neighbourhood police etc. You could of cause argue that it is not doing any harm, but I think it spoils the area. The relationship is not good so not one I was going to sort out through direct dialogue. Perhaps you are the person illuminating South London so may wish to give your opinion. Serious suggestions please. I have considered fighting back with a laser, spot lighting, illuminated signs etc but that is all a bit silly.

What is your budget? Sports clubs eg oncs off of Dulwich Common will be fine, but will not be cheap. Otherwise backroom or upstairs in a pub would probably be cheaper. There must be enough adults to act as door staff/bouncers. That was the condition when we were all having our 18ths.

I don't believe in rubbing people's faces in it, but I'll make an exception this time, to be in a Liverpool pub when Everton came back to 4-4 was one thing and then this:

are there any fairly local pub quizzes on a thursday?
malumbu replied to hellosailor's topic in The Lounge
CPT quiz was the first and the best. But hold on, what is happening? http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,811783 -
I've been directed here as I was ranting about people behaving like sheep on the 'petrol' thread. I was involved in emergency planning for several years and know a fair amount. There were a couple of blips in 2005 to fuel supplies due the the media stirring up the risks of a blockade of depots/refineries, and loss of refineries and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. There was no credible threat, and no reduction in supply, but similar panic buying as we are seeing at the moment. At that time government, working through third parties, helped put out reassuring messages. Those reassuring messages are no doubt still ready at a touch of a button, but for some reason Maude decided to shoot the government in its foot. As for wages, interesting that they sell about ten times more Guardians in East Dulwich than any other paper, yet some of the debate goes into Daily Mail territory (not all I hasten to add). I am sure that many of you are well paid office workers and intellectuals facing daily dangers of getting trapped in the photocopy machine or crushed getting into Pret. So how many of you would say that you were too highly paid, and would give up any of your lucrative pay and conditions. Just asking.

Silly me, I thought it was to debate the sheep like behaviour of the population and the government's clever ploy of taking on the drivers, who of course deliver the fuel, by asking people to risk their lives by hoarding the stuff in inappropriate areas (with sympathy for the poor lady that got burnt). I'd actually taken no notice of what was happening on the streets but on a rare trip to the white bread capital of the world, ak (formerly as) Savacentre, I asked what cars were doing stopped on a row of empty fuel pumps. To find out that they were waiting for the next delivery of unleaded. Interesting as they were only delivering diesel. Thought I'd take a picture, but then decided not worth provoking people. I was buying a picture frame by the way, you never know when you might need one, its better to be safe than sorry, and it can always come useful for firewood if there is a gas shortage. Everyone should be responsible for their own reslience. Anyway thought that twit-ter thing was the best way to get info out and flashmobs forming. (over 15 years experience in emergency planning) I'll take note and start ranting on the correct thread now!

This was not a crisis but a home goal. Delivery fleets do not use the forecourt to refuel but have their own outlets. BBC did their bit to stir it up by that stupid formula - simplistic at the best, misleading and just wrong at the worst. Paxman talked about a hoard of battle-hardened protestors that would blockade fuel depots in 2005. They didn't exist. They still can't resist misinformation 7 years later. And they are the good guys compared to other news outlets. We are truly a pathetic nation, and none of you on this thread have contributed to a proper argument. Prove me wrong. Irony is that there is finite fuel in filling stations, if there is a panic who do we turn to to replinish it? The tanker drivers. Oh. Most people on this site don't need regular use of vehicles in any case and could manage with shanks' pony, public transport or whatever for a few days. I am only ranting as I am an expert in this area, and can't understand the stupidity (in government and across much of the population) that we have seen.
