  1. Interesting post. Can it be done in any realistic manner given the value of our currency, even if we buy stuff the prices are not commensurate with the prices overseas. There's a term for it in economics, but not sure what it's called at the moment.
  2. Glad to hear you are ok.haven't been on the bike for like two mOnths, just not feeling super confident at the moment.
  3. This is such a cool thread. It's giving me ideas for when I go shopping. I used to eat mackerel but have been unsure what to do with it these days.

Well, that's my story anyway. > > ( other than posting ) Raising the rainbow flag > and planting the pole.... > > Pray tell ? > > Nette::o
  5. I fully support the gaiety of nations . :))
  6. Nothing beats the patter of light homophobia in the guise of wit.
  7. Basic advice is. Correct. Licence and notice period is two weeks same as rent period. Don' t think baliff is a problem just don't open the door to them.
  8. Eraser head is the only film I have ever walk out of the cinema, but it was the film it was me. Something about deconstruction of the family. I really cannot stand horror flicks.
  9. @Tarot, whilst I totally recognise why you suggest other options, this whole work will set you free is not always for everyone. I have this graeco Roman perception about the ephimeral innocence of youth and the possibilities that this time present. There's a reason why advertising and the media in general seem to be youth obsessed. I guess I'm slightly hesitant because of your eagerness to find nothing valuable in something that they find valuable. Young and old people make mistakes, some of these girls may end up in unsatisfactory relationships and just maybe some of them will feel like they are living fulfilled and meaningful lives.
  10. I actually thought the way the girls were dressed made sense because they only had that opportuniy during wedding ceremonies to attract mate. It makes sense to turn up the voltage on a special occasion given that there is limited contact between the sexes at other times. Kind of like a Peacocks plumage or driving a Ferrari.
  11. I am so sorry but I love a good debate and right now this thread is rocking.:))
  12. If I wanted a doormat for a wife I would have bought a doormat. I dont think the issues are so simple and I was actually enjoying the conversation as it seemed to touch on important issues such as agency of the actors. How do you tell someone they are oppressed when they dont think they are. How do you distinquish between aspects of the culture which repress and those which evince a strong indication of an alternative cultural identity? For me it is a it like a set of scales and you sort of throw a bit on each time to see whether a particular parctice has good and bad effects. You look at who benefits and how inequality is entrenched. For some kinds of oppression gender difference is enough but it is not always the sole basis. What on earth is a dag? I might have to google this.
  13. But is it abuse if the young girl in that situation is happy with her lot? Not just content, but happy? Reminds me of another great show on the beeb. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=e82_1187424827 the Beeb.
  14. hotmail @ Peckhamboy, just out of interest how did you get your hands on your batch of fur
  15. None the wiser about this "dags" business. Sometimes you need anatomically correct models or to live on a farm.
  16. @Tarot:equality in the workplace in reality has led to the feminisation of work and a drop in wage levels as reactionary as that sounds I think it raises questions about the gains one can achieve within capitalism. On the cultural aspect, these oppressive belief systems are socially determined. How else but through culture and tradition and the economic system is oppression practised?
  17. "I'm aware of the written elements of our constitution. But if you want British people to have the same respect for it that Americans do, you're going to have to do better than asking them to quote the Magna Carta! Or the 1689 Bill of Rights. Or EU statutes. Because they are all part of it. " The main difference seems to be the Americans have one document they can point at "the Constitution." You seem to suggest that having one document instead of many sources for the fundamental principles of a society makes all the difference. I am not so sure. what is it then that you think engenders respect for the American constitution? When I said we didn't have a written constitution I was referring to the lack of a single, comprehensible, accessible document that one could, say, borrow from a library. "the lack of a single, comprehensible, accessible document" : I thought you meant codification, what did you mean here then? The reference to breast milk is about the suggestion that there is something innate about being English which atcs as a rudder and ensures fair play in the stormy seas of international relations.
  18. "I would say the following are an inconclusive list of central tenets to being British: Belief in equality indistinct from race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, age Belief in the rule of law Belief in democracy " Something about fair play is often mentioned in the same breath. As in, imbibed and learnt, breast milk and the playgrounds of Eton etc. I dont see why codification alone should lead to greater identification with particular ideals or respect for the principles. The Americans cherry picked their practice from a European tradition.
  19. At D_C, we do have a constitution, it is just not codified. Magna Carter?
  20. "Tell us about your own experience not something you've read out of Daily Mail or watched on telly." I like this, a lot.
