It used to be open until 4.00. Someone told me it was now a squat - does anyone know if that is true. The Funky Monkey in Camberwell used to be open until 2.00 on Friday and Saturdays I think.

    The Vale

Against the flow, I occasionally meet my partner there for a quick drink after work as it is close to the station and have never seen any trouble, the decor is good and the fire lovely (choice of beers ok-ish). Perhaps it's because we're on our way by 7.30ish that we don't see the more seedy side of it.
  7. If they don't take you within the limit then you can take their number (just threatening/looking like you are doing so can do the trick) and then you can report them. Can't remember much about it as it is so long since I've taken a cab I've forgotten the procedure. I think if they are reported a number of times then they can lose their Hackney Cab License but am not sure about that. If you just say Lordship Lane without the East Dulwich bit it is always possible that they think you want to go to Alexandra Palace way.....

  10. Kel's right there was a lingerie shop where William Rose was, after it was a Pine Furniture shop for ages - it only lasted a few months. Music shop would be good.
  11. Brendan Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What is the difference between Lahmucan and Pide? From what I remember Lahmucan is like a thin crust pizza with very simple toppings mainly herbs and spices and Pide is more bready and like a thick crust with more substantial toppings.

Must say I was suprised as it's never seemed busy enough to need to expand. Hey ho - perhaps if they put both Lahmucan and Pide on the menu as well as on the window it would please both HeidiHi and myself.
  13. Well if nothing else this thread has introduced me to DM's blog - I know where to go for a quick giggle at work now! Hilarious! Almost makes me wish I was a mother to understand her trials and trevails...............
  14. Thanks Eileen - that's really interesting. I'll have a look out for the walks.

I know quite a lot of older ladies who work in these shops and they get as much out of volunteering as they put in - company, a feeling of being useful, getting out of the house - and yes, I expect the chance to get first choice of items that come in the shop. Of course they are doing a great job, but to think it is a purely altruistic is naive. Anyway they weren't being critised for it, it was just acknowledging that it happens.

I hate to say this but my partners mother volunteered for a charity shop (not in London) and she said that anything nice that came in would go firstly to the staff, then the staff's family and friends and then into the shop, although I'm not saying that they don't pay but they get first dibs. She spoke out about it but they all said that's just the way it was, and not just there. I have worked at jumble sales on books and record stalls and one of the perks of the job was getting the first chance to choose stuff.

As a father did you know that they have a child's entertainer in the garden (or at least they did have a couple of summers ago)?
  24. Horsebox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Cassius, see my edited post, above, for my theory. I think you are right about how long it has been hanging around. I remember drinking only two or three pints at the Ocean in Hackney and have NEVER EVER been quite so ill the next day in all my life. 'Off' Guinness is a killer - and in a venue draft beer lies around in the pipes for ages. Now I only drink bottled beer in venues and feel much better for it.

I used to clean them daily when I worked in a pub (in the days when there was afternoon closing) and the pub was well known for its bitter and Guinness.
