  1. well, yes quids... introducing punctuation marks in lieu would be simpler, more democratic and keep credit cards a handy size. Nice suggestion.
  2. A question about blue wool from a red.... or is it blue wooliness?

  4. I suppose if one wanted to be ultra-correct about this, and as the trend for governments to appologise for the actions of their predecessors is on the up, one could trace the old family tree back a few gens and introduce retrospective hypenation based on Grandmothers' (Maternal and paternal) surnames. If it catches on, credit cards may need to be a lot longer.
  5. In the lounge not all posts are what they seem. A request for blue wool may reveal the reasons it has to be blue - "Any other colour makes me see red" And what it's for - "I like bondage but I'm essentially gentle by nature" Or may be to suck people in - "Blue wool fascists!" Or even start a debate that goes on for pages - "Look, you moron, the wool vendor you have suggested uses child labour!" "Yes but if it's a really deep blue that is excusable in my book" "Are you BBW in disguise" etc, etc. - and entertains everyone. I see the lounge as a suck-it-and-see arena and often view posts by rote rather than reading the title to see if it may appeal. Anything as mundane and specific as the above should really have been in the 'wanted' section and would maybe not have gleaned as many views if it had been. Now it's 3 - wanna bet on the final total?
  6. Is Otta's experience the common one among the children of married couples who retain their own surnames? If the hyphenated offspring of such an arrangement marries someone from a like family and follows their parents' example, do their children have a quadruply-hyphenated surname? And is there a limit or can someone end up as Smith-Brown Squared?
  7. I think the "Mind that lady with your scooter y' little sod" has already been established and that the weird-out-of-touch-sexist use of what is rapidly becoming the 'L' word would be something like "We do not have enough ladies in the Cabinet" or "I'd like all the men to line up here and the ladies over there" but I've not come across either so maybe it's largely theoretical*. There was a similar problem with Ms. some years ago. Initial resistance then acceptance and yet, more recently it seems, a drift back into the Miss and Mrs way of doing things. Do those (female) posters who have expressed an indifference to being called lady or woman feel the same about miss, mrs or ms? Are you ever introduced (formally/at work) as one when you would prefer the other and if so do you correct it? Sits in comfy chair and opens bag of gender-neutral popcorn. *Please insert your "Or you didn't notice because you're a man" - type comments here.
  8. Then there's the New York cabbie who leans out of his window to yell "Hey, move your goddamn ass lady!" An English cabbie might yell "Move your bleedin' arse woman!" ...is that better? I've had midle-aged women (in shops or pubs) call me love, darling, chuck and pet (regional variations) for years but only felt able to reply in a similar vein when I was over 30. Before that it was an impersonal "thanks" because "Thanks ma'am" was out of the question and "Thanks missus" made one feel like the artful dodger. "Thanks lady", although still odd-sounding, would have been as useful as "mate" or "pal" back then. Re quid's missus saying "Come on ladies", I've heard 'girls' used in similar circs by women well past 50 but maybe there are just more alternatives for men: "Come on guys*, fellahs, boys, lads, chaps (usually ironic), gentlemen/gents (ditto for irony), you-bunch-of-fucks **, *although this is often used for male and female groups **only really used in a group of close friends

  12. "I'd like the All Day Breakfast please." "We stop serving that at one." "But the sign says All Day Breakfast" "Yes, that's just the name of the shop luv. Breakfast stops at one." "Just the name of the shop!?" "Yes, that's if there's an R in the month, otherwise it stops at twelve. Your name does begin with a P, doesn't it?" "Well, no, actually, of course it's uh...." "Well that'll be half eleven then, then." "Half eleven? Blimey!"

  14. Toff isn't nearly sneery enough when compared to the others - there are elements of compliment in it old-school-style "Cor, you're a toff guvnor and no mistake" as well as the accepted Alf Tupper "Grr those toffs from Ardsley AAC have swiped me vest!" which still sounds quaint. The opposite of pleb appears to be aristocrat or patrician so maybe wristy prat (with accompanyng gesture)?

Odder was the start to that comment- "I come from a famous football club, West Ham, and that was like watching Bobby Moore." Well, you were there for a bit Al, mate, but 'come from'? Collocini's a good enough defender but, imo, doesn't have the anticipation or distribution skills of BM.
  16. RD we are on the same side of the fence but we won't go round in circles - we are not England... and i still disagree with/reject everything you've said (but as you're a ManU fan I understand your pov) except the final comment; You're right, Ferguson has never needed an excuse to get rid of payers, if anything the Jaap Stam thing has probably made him count to ten and reassess things before getting rid of anyone for other than football reasons. I do think Rio is on the way out though and the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned... there's a place waiting for him in E13. :)
  17. red devil Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > Ok, so what 'due thought'* should the players be > giving on this particular issue? Maybe just enough to see the Elephant with its trunk up its own anus? Come on, there are those who will join campaigns without 'due thought' and who will wear a t-shirt or a wrist-band which they think stands for 'something' out of a desire to be seen to be involved in that particular campaign/issue etc. but without finding out whether or not the organisation they are promoting does what it says on the tin. > So why haven't these players taken it up with the > PFA then? Are they still members and paying subs? > If so, why? Because disagreeing with a stance taken by their association is no reason for any player to leave - rather they should stay and make their feelings know (which they have). Far from it being pointless and not 'legitimate' there is discussion as to how the FA could and should be doing more and that maybe there had crept in a feeling of complacency in the UK that racism was only a problem abroad now. The question being asked is "Why would Ferdinand and the others do this?" and that is a question that can only help improve things. > No one has or is denying Rio his right to free > speech, instead the problem is that it appears he > didn't say anything. > In response to Friday's press conference questions > about Jason Roberts saying he wouldn't wear the > KIO t-shirt, Fergie said ''all the players are > wearing it''. > Judging by Fergie's surprise and anger at > Saturday's post-match interview, it does suggest > that Rio didn't go and speak to Fergie after the > press conference, and say he wouldn't be wearing > the t-shirt. This is why Fergie was peed off, > Rio's action undermined what he said on Friday. > Rio wasn't disobeying an order, because an order > was never given, merely an expectation... So freedom of speech only with permission? No. The surprise and anger was at not being obeyed without question. SAF doesn't get it. If he wanted to be sure and gave a toss about the issue he should have spoken to Ferdinand before making any such public claim. We are never going to agree RD but the Terry decision was, imo, a 'game changer' - one of those 'Do as we say not as we do' moments that means everything that went before (including kio campaigns and ribbons and banners etc) was seen (exposed?) as nothing but window dressing. The FA have lied about it too (the CPS said they never pressurised the FA to hold off on dealing with Terry). It speaks of a mealy-mouthed and hypocritical approach to racism that will come down hard on foreigners like Suarez but will tread softly around England icons. ETA: Just reread and realised i didn't answer your Q re 'what' due thought players should etc, etc, - I just talked about due thought in principle. In this case I would say that players might ask whether the kio charity - backed and funded by the FA - can continue to enjoy their support in light of the FA's recent actions. The twisted logic being that an organisation against racism that is backed by an association that has shown itself to be soft on dealing with racists is, well, possibly only there to make the association look good.
  18. red devil Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > A+ for twisted logic maxxi... Teased not twisted - too many t-shirts and wrist bands worn without due thought. KIO have the PFA as backers and they (PFA) have (according to black players - ask Joleon Lescott) repeatedly failed to back black players when making complaints about player-on-player racial abuse. The original point (that Ferguson is out of line) got a little help from PFA president who (as I suggested should be the case) said he will defend Ferdinand's right to free speech whilst trying to persuade him of kio's effectiveness.

Exactly - so it's important young fans have role models who demonstrate an ability to think for themselves and take a stand, however naive, ineffective or wrong-headed some think it, for what they believe in. Maybe those same youngsters will think about what it really means if they are ever asked/told to wear a sloganized shirt themselves in future. (That's how you avoid being a sheep Alex). And re the effectiveness of the weekend's refusals - yes it may only have generated more publicity but surely that's a good thing. If everyone had worn the shirts would today's back pages be so full of the debate?

  21. Looking forward to Maiga's goal too SAF is totally wrong - the kick it out thing is meaningless if players are to be forced to wear the shirts as though they (k.i.o.) were sponsors. He thought his heavy hinting beforehand would force Ferdinand into wearing it and was just pissed it didn't.
  22. Okay so I suppose every market has buskers now and then, but do they really need to be amplified to the extent that anyone living within earshot gets only the thud-thud-thud of their crappy bass all bloody afternoon? Busk if you must but do it 'unplugged'.
  23. Octsober doesn't scan as it has a clumsy Germanic zeta stop. Ocsober fine but octsober nichts (as it war). Nodrinkvember being quadrisyllabic has a scan that relies on an imaginative pre-line and fits in with most Western verse/song formats. This is without even addressing the well known 'remember remember' set-up that could so easily be adapted to furnish a satisfying finish leaving Octsober with nowhere to go. I suspect I may be left with januarrrrrIreallyshoudn'tdrinknymore-y. But that's scansion for you.
