your point was " Green Park station isn't really that central (I.e. not close to anywhere you'd want to go except the parks.) " and my point is that that's not really true Other people may have their issues with the route you took, but I'm not one of them - I was just picking up on that specific point

"There is no way of recording how many people, when they first heard of the prank, thought "what a pair of @rseholes", I did, but this was little reported in the media. " Given how many people on here post a lot of what they think, I can measure the EDF quotient - nil. But thinking someone is an arsehole is not the same as thinking "ooh that's a bit dangerous - she might kill herself because of their arseholery" "The DJs phone a hospital (full of sick people), record the resulting conversation and then broacast that recording for general public ridicule, this without the permission of those they recorded. " not sure where the "full of sick people" comes into it - they weren't dragged from their beds to be humiliated on air. Other than that, what you describe is the very nature of prank calls. Do I think it's bullying - of a kind yeah probably. But what do you want to do - ban all prank calls from ever happening? I'm not trying to defend prank calls - I'm just saying it's unlikey they cause someone to kill themselves. Even if it's a trigger event, what does that even mean - do you go around stopping any trigger event from happening? And how would you do that exactly
-
more like 10-12 minutes but is that so bad? And you're basically walking up Bond St so yeah I'd say you were "central"
-
So where was the uproar about the prank before the nurses death?
-
have I missed the piece where they were trying to "obtain confidential medical information" in the call? http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/transcript-djs-prank-call-london-nurse-article-1.1215498 it's hardly asking for a fax of the records is it?
-
sorry MP but there is a wicth hunt going on, and the fact that the subject of that witch hunt appear to be fairly odious is neither here nor there I repeat - on the back of the call, I didn't hear a single person say "put that nurse on watch as she may be a danger to herself - we don't know what's going on in here life so best be careful" And the reason they didn't do that is because it was just a hoax call - of which we have experienced many many many. People tend to kill themselves for all sorts of reasons (including be the subject of witch hunts and death threats on social media, as the 2 djs are) but victim of a prank call - not so much "Phoning a hospital, seeking medical information about a sick patient which you have no right to, is not appropriate in any circumstances. In this case, it pushed one of the victim's of their prank over the edge. That she was possibly close to the edge beforehand is not relevant. They were not to know, but they should not have made the call in the first place. Their actions led, in part, to the suicide of somebody else. They have that to answer for." I suspect the phone call wasn't to seek medical information - it was to see "how far they could go before being caught" - I base that suspicion on having "a brain" and seeing many a prank call develop. How do you stop radio stations making prank calls, globally? Do you tell djs, "don't make a prank call, ever" (personally, I'd be happy to never hear a prank call again - tedious business - but forbidding them seems OTT) Besides, the whole incident seemed to upset nobody. The royals laughed it off, why would the woman take it so seriously. You can't legislate for that Saying that people have "a brain" and therefore shouldn't have made the call only works if you think that, before setting up a prank, someone might kill themselves on the back it. And why would you have though that last week?

Green park station is bout 5 min walk to Piccadilly Circus and little more than that to Oxford st How can you call it not central?
-
What loz said Put it this way. In the days between the phone call and the death was there an outpouring of concern for the woman? No. There wasn't. Because why would there be. She fell victim to a prank. That is the beginning and end of it as far as the rest of us should be concerned What happens to her subsequently is the result of various factors, which we are unlikely to ever be privy to Sometimes there isn't someone to blame. We seem to find it hard to accept that sometimes
-
Or maybe, just maybe no blame needs to be apportioned anywhere here The death is awful, but everything else (prank phone calls, helpful medical staff, no VIPs hurt in any way) suggests a functioning society. Leave it alone

That's an answer to a question I didn't ask Legislation in Ireland is recent and hasn't changed the makeup of the papers to my knowledge. Ie beforehand they were breaking corruption stories and now they aren't? My question was... Well you can read it again in the post above
-
Anyone speculate why the papers opposed over here have signed up to regulation without complaint in Ireland? If they object so much why not pull out of a (minimal?) market?
-
Sorry. Maybe I wasn't clear The examples provided are things that people do together. In pretty much any society at some point. And all of them with plenty of non-individual power structures dictating what people could or couldn't do I thought that some people were pushing for a world where their idea of libertarianism actually had taken root, and most obstacles to individual freedoms were removed an we could see how individuality was a beacon for the rest of us. But I suspect such a society can't exist for the reasons H states

Desperately sad. But people seem to be over-blaming a pair of idiots Half way around the world
-
Awful death but step back a minute. Why would being the victim of a prank call cause someone to commit suicide (which seems to be the jist of what people are saying?) Must be more to this surely
-
The death is awful But it was silver surfer who raised the death in a thread about the royals
-
Silver surfer. You by the look of it. Care to comment on why a sad death is connected with the royal family?
-
Anywhere we can look to on the planet for good examples Dave?

Given that topping the group guarantees no favourable draw, and given the weekends must win game against WBA, and given how leggy senior players have looked, I don't have a problem with Wenger's tactics last night. Also a chance for some second-stringers to show how they can (or can't) step up But there is a much wider issue at Arsenal, much of which remains unknown and is yet to be played out I reckon On the plus side, the rest of the PL is almost as kerazy this season so I reckon those top 4 places will remain open for quite a while yet

some background here strawbs: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8557236.stm Having just come through it, my main advice would be to not worry too much (despite alarming appearance) and focus on looking after the little one. Lots of attention and time Various products may or may not help a little bit but like most colds, what will be will be and just takes time to go through the system

Anyone know if ED station is running trains to LB today?
StraferJack replied to KPR's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I went to John Lewis yesterday With a buggy and infant And without a car It was fine I would have preferred a train to LB but it didn't stop us doing anything and the alternative routes were fine Yes there should be trains on weekends and they should be better but "You don't need a car in London brigade' are sadly mistaken." is a bit OTT the other way -
"Hysteria and politics" "Sod 300 years of freedom of the press" And idle reader might think these quotes came from two different people The leveson proposals amount to "sod freedom of the press"?? Really? I haven't read them and I'd be amazed if anyone here had. So what proposals exactly are so problematic? The whiff of hysteria is in the air alright. But it's coming from those opposed to leveson (for days and weeks before it was published btw. Now what does that say)
-
Any time someone says "sign this petition" I recoil That said, as far as reaction goes this week, this is about the best I've seen http://bit.ly/SuTD4U It was 20 of years ago that another Tory govt said the press was in the last chance saloon. If those words are to mean anything...
