    The BBC

?I was waiting for that bit of obvious bile Ted......That's news International Ted not Sky, which is only 50% owned by Murdoch. That's not what this debate is about.? Not sure what the point is there quids. Does any comparison with rival news/media orgs have to be about Sky? Or Murdoch? Are there rules to who we can and can?t compare with? If the beeb is being flayed over this it?s entirely reasonable to compare with other orgs and how they conduct themselves. If someone wants to point out that shareholder accoutability is effectively meaningless, why dismiss them so readily (and quickly) To also berate the BBC for employing someone who didn?t look normal and who rumour abounded about is also a bit dodgy. You know as well as anyone all of the other establishment figures he was friends with (Christmas at Thatcher yadda yadda) but noone else seems to be getting the same ?well they must have KNOWN? treatment And what does ?move on from hatred and onto fact? even mean? Is this a Brasseye special again? Hatred is a strong word and I don?t see much of it in Ted?s post ? irritation that other organisations don?t have to flaggelate themselves in the way the beeb does, yes, but ?hatred?? Have you read some of your posts objectively? Not saying hatred is the correct word, but your tone and adherance to facts don?t always match your professed standard

Agree with quids about much of what he says re: sky. Not all, but much To take the more generalised points about the BBC tho.. ?horrendously overstaffed with far too much nothing jobs middle management? Might be true, might not ? can?t see your evidence tho. I know you are keen on unemotive arguments so? ?no clear lines of responsibility and generally not much of a price to pay for failure unless the events are as catastrophic as this one. ? Certainly seems to be the case in this newsnight business ? altho my friends at the BBC have long complained about the culture of compliance and the punishments meted out to them if they mess up. So I?m not sure about the second half of that statement On this particular case tho, look at the orgy of criticism (internal and external) going on and look at the casualties. Now compare with other news organisations who label people killers or paedophiles (eg Chris Halliewell in Bristol), with pictures on front page, and when that doesn?t come to be true, how many people lose their jobs? Given that any organisation is likely to make mistakes, at least the BBC is not hiding from this It?s not just the ?liberal left? who fear this governments approach to the BBC and the NHS either ? there is a deep suspicion that their intent is idealogical. It?s not necessarily paranoia to suspect this (there may be positive outcomes from the NHS reforms but given their electoral mandate ? slim to nil - and electoral promises, they are taking liberties) and so people are ?conservative? over these institutions. No point ruining a good thing to end up with another rail network mess. Calling people liberal leftie conservatives might be part of your ?fun? but it does most of your arguments no credit I suspect some people don?t like Sky not because of the product itself but it?s owner ? and that?s fair enough, I am a sky subscriber and agree with most of your points around the quality esp sport. That said, just to watch sky sports ALONE, one pays nearly double the annual license fee, so it should be good. The other reason to be cautious over Sky is to look at it?s owners channels globally in less regulated markets ? THAT is what people suspect they will end up with once the BBC is neutered. And I think that is fair comment And if you are a pub owner (catering to your needs in this case) they charge exhorbitant rates ? and this (more than nappy-valley-syndrome) explains the diminishing number of pubs willing to show sports. My brother? last bill was for 12k. And that isn?t a big pub by any means They are perfectly entitled to do it of course ? but to claim the BBC is stifling or has monopolistic instincts in light of this seems unfair 24 hour rolling news? A plague on society in my view ? regardless of the carrier. When something genuinely groundbreaking happens (very rare) then maybe ? but they (24 hour channels, not Sky) have devalued TV news as a product and now I don?t watch any of them

His response in radio 4 did rather show him out of his depth tho
  4. "My" Oh dear. Careful dear Anyone remember last week when the beeb were the bad guys because news night would not name the accused? But they held firm
  5. What does schofield have to do with bbc?
  6. it's not fast that's for sure - in fact veeeery slow sounds about right however, I never sit down "to do it" and end up hanging around - it just goes about it's business whilst I'm doing something else As for copying them back to another device like a PC - why bother. Safer and tidier to just access dropbox from the Pc surely? As for music files from pc to phone via dropbox.. 1 or 2 maybe but many more? hmmmm
  7. "Firstly, not sure that acronym is going to catch on. " heh - touch?
  8. "Otta's right, this is the way politics is going. Unfortunately." I disagree on two counts 1 ) there won't be one from each party in there next year 2 ) if it DOES go down that road then it won't be politics to blame - it'll be the public. If Dorries is correct and people don't bother with "the dry stuff" and they prefer them in IACGMOOH, then it's not the politicians at fault ultimately I think what will happen is the public will ridicule her, not "listen" to her, just as they did Galloway
  9. Not to sound like IDS but I think Romney gets slightly over caricatured over here. Take him away from trying to lead/manage GOP expectations and I?m sure youd find a much more palatable individual The bigger problem for the party is where do they go from here. They are correct that America is changing but their relatively narrow, and rapidly ageing voter-base isn?t keen to acknowledge this ? so moderate candidates only get lukewarm backing . Then you have the lunatic element trying to go ever more rightwards ? get one of their people in charge and there will be a lot of noise supporting them but the wider electorate won?t be interested
  10. "WoD I use my glass thingies when making curries or complicated / staged dishes, putting the required spices etc. in each container then lining them up in sequence they're to be used." exactly this - doesn't take long to wash them up either
  11. what channels are you watching? maybe they are the SD versions of the channel
  12. I see wher you are coming from with BHO, but again, I don't think it necessarily means anything. is it any different to JFK - do some democrats also use it? hang on - quick google... http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002894898
  13. You don't have to go for the jugular quite so often H I expect Alex is one of many non-republicans dissapointed with Obama's overall performance - the apparent lethargy in the second half especially and views Clinton as a more energised candidate. Wether that would turn out to be true in the real world remains to be seen but you don't have to be a paid up tea party member to express a preference
  14. What Otta said times 10 Similar to the House of Tippler and their "no children" policy - it appears to the outsider like they could do with the business but it's great that you can find a place aimed at more adults Come on, as parents we don't exactly want for places to go do we? We might want more, but basically the vast majority of local business looks after us, we can deal with the gardens not doing so All that said.. the points about service and general air of indifference from the staff remain true. My complaints about the place would start with that - when they fix that I'll go back more often
  15. Never liked that Ben Bradshaw. Glad he beat his odious opponent back in 97 but even so (Had to pick a less obvious one than Gideon. But really, it's him who makes me hold my daughter close and pray to a god I don't believe in)
  16. And back in snorkys world... What would the reality be? Problems with the system? Amen Anyone who wants to engage and try and change it are vermin? Poor, poor
  17. It's not as if that particular one hasn't shown signs before She's an idiot. But the reaction of her party has been swift and correct Nothing to see here
  18. On his way to 5 live now "'It is a good rule never to apologize. The right sort of people do not want apologies and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them.'"
  19. "Quids late birthday combined wvth EDF Xmas drinks is imminently to be announced" the lengthy build-up to this suggests it has required it's own Kickstarter funding ;-)
  20. "to face facts - this is a mainstream BBC station" Not sure that?s strictly true I know it (desperately) wants to be I know they have spent years since the GLR days diluting and diluting (BBC LDN indeed!) But it?s never been a big draw, much less a ?healthy mainstream audience? And a city like London should have an odd local BBC station reflecting the mix and curiosity of the city and let LBC take care of the commercial side of things Bracket BBC London in with the 6 Music and Radio 4s and nurture interesting things . As a station I?d be surprised if it cost as much as the glossy Radio 1 ads alone
  21. In the words of the man himself: "Deep thanks to everyone who has responded about the radio. We dwell amid pinheaded weasels who know only timid, the generic and the abacus." Via twi.... Oops
  22. So now candy man is getting heave ho from bbc london Absolute idiots. 16% required savings and that's who you get rid of? The whole point is to have something worth saving, otherwise just save 100%
  23. It?s possible the shops in question can?t remember if people put up lights before or not. Perhaps they haven?t the time (or interest) to check if anyone put up lights earlier or later in previous years Perhaps they don?t waste their lives looking at what other shops do or don?t do Perhaps this post is a non-too-subtle parody of brand new threads on tired old subjects and anticipates the response it?s likely to get
  24. Not sure of implication of this tweet but sounds interesting "Chelsea race case against Clattenburg in jeopardy as club brings in lawyers to conduct internal investigation. Mail tmrw+online" From Neil Ashton
