  1. be fair snorks, it's not just him that you incur the wrath of is it?
  2. One of the opening lines in her latest book is "Recently my husband and I separated, and over the course of a few weeks the life we'd made broke apart, like a jigsaw dismantled into a heap of broken-edged pieces." And I decided that my eyes couldn'ttake much more. That is one CLUMSY, ugly and unwieldy sentence
  3. Olde orchard inn is run by former residents of east dulwich and looks lovely Not sure of your budget but I'm sure if you mention the edf you'll get a discount
  4. I think mine sides with the bear - she gives him a wave as he slopes off on the last page
  5. The one that tickled me this week was a review of "Going on a Bear Hunt" - childrens book which my 1 year old loves (and has done for a while). However THIS reviewer thought "First impression of course is the fact the artwork really is lovely. What a great artist. The story started out fine but then page by page descended into terror. " terror mind you! they continue: "Even lost my appreciation of the artwork because it depicted a little too well the fearful story. So what shall we do with this book? Can't make up the story as the pictures tell it all as well. What is a child to get out of this book? I struggle to find a value for it, shame. " With a parent like that, how is a child going to deal with the real world??
  6. All time favourite time-killer is to read the 1 star reviews of cast iron classics It doesn't matter if you do or don't like the classic in question - these people miss the point (of everything!) by such a wide margin, one can only imagine how they cobbled together the wherewithal to use a computer
  7. Ha! Is that why I tried to use the cashpoint at Barry's yesterday and it was out of order? ;-) I think I've posted elsewehere about this nursery, but to reiterate on this thread how good we find them. Can't believe it's been close to 6 months our little one has been going and still she jumps out of the buggy every day she goes, happy as larry to spend the day there jennyH makes a good point about the children being fond of each other as well - every time I go to pick her up there is lots of hellos and goodbyes and a liitle wave to ecah of teh kids pictures above their pegs on the way out
  8. why is that not 3/2 - I never understand those odds
  9. sobering stuff, last night Fairly disgusting attitudes from our players on display, no-one seemed up for it - all the brickbats that can be thrown should be. It was abject and still, and still I don't get so upset these days. It's a bunch of millionaires running around a field in colourful shirts. It can be fun, it can be nice to watch but when you see what's happening to Portsmouth and Rangers, it's hard to get too upset about lsoing to AC Milan at the San Siro. Or even Sunderland next Saturday
  10. Wayne bridge was the "victim" in that scenario, and not having had the racial element it just didn't have the tinderbox element that the Suarez incident did. It wasn't the "not shaking hands" in isolation, it was the wider context
  11. The bit where you said it was funny suggested the joke. The bit where you said it was a fair point not so much I wasn't having a pop or anything, just saying why I didn't think it was really a fair point
  12. apart from the obvious Cantona one, the others aren't really relevant to the game tho, are they - personal matters when not representing the club. The drugs test maybe, but feasibly an accident and he did serve his sentence so that leaves the kung fu kick. Which I still have a sneaky regard for. But it wasn't "ok" - the club suspended him for 4 months
  13. Otta On this very thread you said "live and let live". As a whole post You are surely aware that that is the exact opposite of how people coexist in communities and therefore how politicians have to react. You and I might admire live and let live as a philosophy. But we live in a world where we have (for example) big, huuuuge, arguments about cpz. As a petty example Real people, voted for by real people, have to reach conclusion, one way or another. Live and let live doesn't cut it. Al Swearagen was a live and let live kinda guy. It sounds nice but doesn't work at this level. If it did people who object to prayers would be listened to and told "yeah fair enough we will probably stop that now you mention it. We aren't that fussed, we prefer live and let live so if you don't want to sit through exclusive prayer, fair enough"
  14. Well gee in that case anytime someone says something you don't like In a meeting just ignore it. Brilliant As far as difference between society and state goes. Either you care about the state view (in which case defend it) or you don't. In which case it's irrelevant And quids. I'm happy to be wrong or miss a point. But I'm less happy being misrepresented by your earlier posts. So if you genuinely think I view you that way or you don't I wouldn't mind knowing either way. Because its at odds with what I think I posted And at odd with how I view you. So if you do think that is what I thought of you I wouldn't mind a fuller explanation
  15. So entrenched politicians and an outdated monarchy are behind the times. Nothing new there So why am I listening and (worse) seeing oickles and co for last few days talk about this as if it was some Sort of assault on civilisation? When something like this happens, my honest expectation is, people wonder what someone like pickles is talking about, think "does parliament really do this too? Why?" and then everyone hopes we evolve I don't expect many people to say its a dawkins attack on church of England
  16. Quids. Please don't put words in my mouth. I no more think (or have ever thought) you are a creationist than I think you a milwall fan. Why would you pretend otherwise. You said dawkins bored you so I took from that you don't like him. Much anyway. Is that a leap too far? Hardly. Does it portray you as a creationist? Just HOW could it do that. You are going too far I think. A right wing nut job? Where do you get this stuff? I picked you up on a tiny point and you reacted. I then talked about the facts that happened (ie Coe not under attack) and you have chosen to put quite a number of unworthy comments in my mouth. I genuinely don't get it Otta. What does "it's a Christian country" even MEAN? Have you checked church going numbers recently?
  17. Too late? Maybe Much too late? Don't think so. Better late than Never in this case. Leaves a lot of Liverpool flat earther fans (I'm not including otta here btw. Think he has presented his arguments well) looking very silly. But like japanese fighters post ww2, some will carry on
  18. Yeah I do think Dawkins is irrelevant to the discussion Pickles and Christian groups have presented the ruling as some sort of attack on Christianity. ?All the ruling says is that religious prayers (and that can be any denomination you like) should not be part of "formal" council business. ?Attack on Coe or christianity? How so? How is that weird. Or do you want to include every councillors religion to be included as part of the formal kick off If churches start being attacked or people prevented from praying in their own home or place of worship I'll man the barricades with you (well... Up to a point) But this is a formal meeting to discusses the needs of all voters and citizens. ?Having a prayer exclusive to any one religion is just inappropriate. ?Having prayer for all religions is impractical. ?Ergo, forget the prayers (as part of formal business remember. Noone is prevented from praying beforehand. ?and crack on with what needs doing Even if this country was religious (and it surely ain't. ?It might not be formally secular, but Christian? No) ?it would still be inappropriate? Mentioning people ?otta? Wtf. Complaining about people you don't like In a thread which doesn't talk about them isn't "mentioning". ?It's bringing up a totemic bogeyman to express prejudice, not to talk about the point in hand? Which, as we are in the subject, what exactly is the point of praying before the meetings (or parliament) ?
  19. In retrospect that Sylvian album is scary in and of itself and not background Side 2 of Bowies low perhaps. From warszawa onwards for those not use to lps
  20. Which story are you reading btw ?
  21. "...to be honest I'm as bored of Richard Dawkins et al as I am of Archbishop Runcie." So bored in fact, you brought him up when NOONE else did
  22. David Sylvian - manofon Seriously.
