  1. Whichever power source we use, we can still afford paragraphs I'm not sure any nation which has closed itself down for several weeks is in any position to laugh at anyone either
  2. quite the curate's egg that PinUps malarkey
  3. as Jah says, long season ahead but very happy so far. I was so hacked off at the Arsenal boo boys, especially after that Villa game at start of season. Of course Ozil has helped massively but we are seeing quality in players that were dismissed by some fans mere months ago Anyway - massive game tonight but the real test will be when we hit a bad run, how will the team (of largely trophyless players) respond
  4. This David king? http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?27,790002,1182908#msg-1182908
  5. Malumbu's posts this evening have... An unusual tone to them
  6. when was that? Take the increase in traffic since that year and figure it out for yourself
  7. penguin - thought I made clear it was someone else posted that comment "Although I especially liked this comment from someone else on that earlier thread "
  8. Looking back, I see penguin and I have form on this subject Although I especially liked this comment from someone else on that earlier thread "Dear Straferjack If you are 'Southwark councillor and member of the ruling labour party' as Penguin68 says, you should be ashamed of your council and your party. "
  9. same as Otta/Ratty with GTA V The vast open countryside in Los Santos (incl Mount Chilead) makes a great place to just go and chill out
  10. Sheesh Penguin, a bit overly harsh and defensive response from you there? I will concede that ?insulting? was probably not the word I should have used ? I thought your earlier response to someone?s suggestion about transport was overly dismissive but not really insulting Not sure your analogies work tho? - nobody was saying you choice on a given day was ?wrong? ? just that if the parking restrictions become onerous, options are available. You don?t really have to dismiss them so readily ?It is still legal (and, frankly, no less moral than any other option) to own and use a car in the UK - no doubt some would like to make it illegal, or to start some form of secular religion which branded it immoral - but until it is made illegal, or is commonly accepted as immoral, then I will continue to make a choice to use a car (or not) as it suits me? It?s getting a bit weird and OTT here ? you seem to be fighting a different argument against different people. I don?t mind in the slightest if you want to drive. But if a council steps in to manage a physical/logistical problem (not a moral or legal one) I don?t quite see the same problem some other people seem to
  11. more cars = more car trips = more parking requirements Space is finite so controlling of parking is inevitable If you were the council and were implementing these parking rules do you honestly think it's a proft maker? How much revenue would be collected versus cost of monitoring? Nobody has the right to expect unfetterd motoring/parking in a world where so many more people take the road every year (and that's likely to include me very soon) Only solution is for people who don't need to to use them less. The idea that if you live a couple of miles away and have kids you can't take train/bus is laughable and insulting to those people that do
  12. Saying the current proposals equals the death of free press isn't helping
  13. I would say gowlett is neither pants nor that busy on a sat afternoon. Off lordship lane as per op request as well
  14. "something like 1/3 of all the people using food banks said the reason was delayed benefits. " what does that mean tho? Really. Are benefits being delayed that weren't previously? So that leaves 2/3rds of people using food banks with different reasons
  15. you really can't think of scenarios where people might be driven to foodbanks as a last resort? Maybe you lost a job and aren't claiming benefits, but your new job has a zero-hours contract and you have no idea how much money you can count on coming in? trumpeting falling jobless figures isn't so good if teh new jobs are less secure/well-paid. That could be avoided Maybe you are in income support but because of the bedroom tax (and the shortage of homes with fewer bedrooms has forced you to stay put) you have less money than your already tight budget allowed? That tax could have been avoided or this: "Evidence from Trussell Trust foodbanks shows food prices have risen by 12.6% above inflation over the past six years and rising energy prices this winter are likely to see more people forced to choose between eating and heating."
  16. what would have triggered that tho?
  17. before we go looking for a solution, we need a consensus about the steep rise in food banks It seems self-evident that it's a sign of something being wrong but then as soon as someone says something like that we have an array of people going "pish and nonsense, nothing to worry about" wether it's Edwina Curry "The former Conservative minister Edwina Currie told Radio 5 live's Stephen Nolan that she did not believe people in the UK were going hungry. Two listeners told her she was wrong but she refused to agree with them." in the media to people on here saying "probably because it's people giving stuff for free" determining a solution in the face of that level of cynicism seems almost impossible.
  18. Man people in this country have become HARSH people just decide to queue up at foodbanks because it's free? You need a voucher "Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, CAB and police identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. Foodbanks partner with a wide range of care professionals who are best placed to assess need and make sure that it is genuine."
  19. Boring bus person alert But as I do a similar commute I feel duty bound to say in the mornings I get the bus - the 40 upper decks is usually effectively empty around 7:15am, and a change at E&C for a 45 is usually quick as well (I often walk from there but maybe not if I was pregnant!) At that hour the journey is usually pretty swift as well - I leave a little earlier and catch a 7am bus from ED Station and am at my desk by about 7:40 I get the train back in the evenings tho - seats seem more plentiful around then
  20. "One thing to bear in mind is that even if you have a reduced mortgage, if you are commuting, particularly from outside of London, your travel costs will more than likely cancel this out. My rail ticket is ?400 a month, my husbands is ?500 (he needs the tube as well)." Horrifying but worth noting that an annual season ticket allows 1/3rd discount for family members as well on individual rail trips which alleviates it some small bit
  21. 3.5 joint income? That suggests we are back to back to where we were with bank lending then? Well not quite as I suspect there is less sub-prime at the moment but when the good customers are maxed out profits have to come from somewhere
  22. "That's because your ?40k salary is competing with two salary couples." not in the scenario outlined it wasn't But let's take that two salary couple - what joint income do you want to give them? 80k? 3.5 times 50 k = 175k + second income of 30k = 205k That's not buying much. Even in Norwood But let's say they have savings of 50k and buy what - a 2 bed flat with that cash? What is next step for them? If they are young they have career progression but unlikely many people would earn money faster than house prices rising? Plus maybe they start a family and earnings dip. Interest rates go up and their outgoings explode I just can't see the progression that people used to be able to do
  23. "so that would mean no rental housing except for the council and theyve got 20000 on the waiting list [ in southwark] chaos" nonsense - that would leave a lot of people who for reasons already outlined who happen to have a second home for non investment reasons plus that waiting list would be much reduced if property were more affordable to buy
