  1. Can anyone provide me with an authentic date for the cutting of the drainage ditch that later became known as the River Neckingker? Thanks. John K
  2. By request.... There was a stream running alongside Lordship Lane that ran to the Grove Vale confluence. This map shows how it was culverted and the flow diverted to Nunhead. This contributed to the drying out of the Grove Vale Waste (see the Rocque map) and helped make it feasible to build houses to the south of Grove Vale. John K
  3. From Anglo-Saxon times Camberwell was part of Brixton Hundred. All of East Dulwich was within Camberwell. All except summary justice was dealt from the Brixton Hundred Court and later the Lambeth Court. This continued until the Courts Act of 1971. The detail is a little more complicated, but broadly, that's it. Summary justice was done by local magistrates and latterly Camberwell Green Magistrates Court. I wouldn't take anything written by Ackroyd as "history" without independent corroboration. John K
  4. Metropolitan Board Of Works High Level Sewer Southside Plan April 1859. Interesting that between 1844 and 1859 a pond was created on Goose Green and the River Peck had been moved eastwards. John K
  5. James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I'm also clear that Waitrose would like the site > as is without the extension - and I've spoken at > length to them about options. Mr Barber. On which date did you start discussions with Waitrose? John K
  6. > The EDF is saying it won't accept my previous post because it is not about East Dulwich. Eileen: The area sourh of Choumert Grove and west of Rye Lane is the historic East Dulwich parish. Admin: The Action Plan boundary takes in huge chunks of East Dulwich south of East Dulwich Road. John K
  7. This one from the bridge shows the roof and entrance decorative metalwork better. c1870? John K
  8. Extract from clearer photo. This give a better idea of the decorative metalwork. John K
  9. I would be the best candidate for Chair of the East Dulwich Boundary Commission. John K
  10. Wrong vernacular and Grove Park is not in East Dulwich. John K
  11. Low resolution of work in progress: Section A-A: In search of the Bronze Age riverbank and the Great East Dulwich Earthquake. Section B-B: In search of the "lost rivers" west of the Peck. John K
  12. Simple... If it was originally in Surrey it's South Dulwich. If in Kent, it's Sydenham. John K
  13. When did Danby Street move into Peckham? John K
  14. Janet Nelson has kindly provided an accurate translation. Her credentials for this are here. John K In this year an agreement was made between the Prior of Bermondsey and the Prioress of Holywell concerning the tithes in East Dulwich, namely, that the said prior and community of Bermondsey should take all the greater tithes coming from the lands which the said nuns had converted from woodland or pasture into ploughed land in the parish of Camberwell.
  15. jim_the_chin and Penguin68: "East" for "Est" is secure. The clincher is the 1820 Charity Commissioners' report on Battersea Parish. GSJ57: I was there. The parade ended in Belair Park. The tableaux were done lakeside. It's taken me nearly 50 years to realise that Bill Darby, my one time latin master, was having a huge joke on the people of Dulwich Village. John K
  16. This text is shaping up to be the earliest authenticated historical reference to East Dulwich.
  17. Two problems. Jeremy: 1) St Saviour's Parish was formed out of St John The Evangelist's Parish. If you are interested you can read about it in Richard Olney's new local history book. 2) SE15 is not Peckham. John K
  18. And the relevant part of the map. John K
  19. Without going outside I don't exactly where numbers 80-84 are located. Dyos has Melbourne Grove (South) built over two estates: Vicarage Grove Bailey's Running North to South: Vicarage Grove Bailey's Vicarage Grove The tongue of Bailey's land that juts over Melbourne Grove probably follows an old field boundary, but I've not checked this right now. So that suggests a handful of reasons: Different estates built over at different times. A pause in building because of the Great Depression. And, if on Bailey's, a Glebe Rent problem having to be resolved. John K
  20. Here is a partial answer to Sue's question of 28 March. It probably also has the derivation of "The Herne Tavern's" name. This land is almost certainly that referred to in the East Dulwich tax settlement of 1245AD. John K
  21. Additional thanks this year to the pastor and congregation who provided a printed order of service and musicians for the hymns. John K
  22. There may be some new arrivals in East Dulwich who do not know the location of our war memorial. John K
  23. Excellent project, Monica and helpers. During the First World War East Dulwich Hospital was used by Canadian soldiers who got a blighty. They convalesced in the hospital garden. I've only ever seen one photo which I've uploaded here. I've never seen the left hand side of the postcard. John K
