This arguement that "all big supeys kill off the indies" is somewhat simplistic. It all depends. I can see what Val's is being badly hit by the Sainsburys as the range of outlets in the Plough area is small. People arent going to be drawn to the Plough area by the Sainsburys. It will be the same people going there for the same things. If its groceries, then they may well go to Sainsburys because it is cheaper and/or has a larger product range and/or they just prefer it. Those that prefer Vals will still go to Vals, whether this is sufficient only time will tell. Lordship Lane is very different with an already large and diverse range of shops. These seem to co-exist with the Coop and Iceland. The only places on the Lane that are likely to be challenged significantly by M&S/Waitrose are the Coop and Iceland and probably more the former than the latter as Iceland has a different product range and demographic. Anyway, realsitically where would it go? Iceland and the Coop might sell if the offer was good enough, maybe, or the indoor market place, if the offer was good enough. Or Foxtons - please God!

Interesting that the assumption is that an M&S/Waitrose would kill off the indie small shops. Not so, I would opine. Given that the nearest such shops are some way away (dont know where) such aspirational supies would draw people into the area and so boost passing trade for the whole of the Lane. People who buy their veg and meat from the posh veg and meat indie shops on the Lane will continue to do so, as they tend to treat supies as the work of the devil; would rather scrub the crap off their carrots themselves and are happy to pay for that honour. The rest of the shops on the Lane have nothing to fear as they sell sparkly things, books, sea-weed based face packs for young children or are boozers.

You grumpy Bugger VBC!! :) Bunch of us went to the Gowlett which was great fun, boogied to Lucky 7s' of various qualities and then had a kebab at Stab and Wine, bumping into more forum chums. At 4am I was sitting on my sofa stuffing doner into my gob watching a Marple. Classy.

Curry Club - Thursday 7 March 2019 - venue TBC

It was a very enjoyable evening, somewhat depleted by the lurgy. Good food with an unfamiliar menu, so it took some time to work out who wanted what. The service was friendly but a little disorganised. Our unfamiliarity with the menu was matched by the waiters unfamiliarity which caused some confusion. I had the lentil doughnuts with sambar followed by a chana dish with puri, onion and tomato salsa and raita, all good stuff. -

Willies on Cars

Hmm, possibly. Although in Dulwich Village one would expect either "Penis" or "Mammary Gland" or possibly an artistic interpretation of the parts herewith indentified following the Newlyn style. I think an out of Village interloper attempting to blend in. -

"Invalid Image Request"? Are you suggesting that these words should be stamped across the willies and boobies as a form of censorship to avoid outraging the morals of East Dulwich? If so, well done, like your thinking. -
Willies on Cars

Boobies and willies? What about the impact on house prices, eh? I wish the people of East Dulwich would think before they draw body parts on parked cars. -
I and friends have noticed an outbreak of willies being drawn in the snow on the cars of East Dulwich. This is shocking, if nothing else they are usually anatomically incorrect and out of proportion. Clearly not a medical man. These willies are causing distress to the ladies of East dulwich not to mention raising their expectations, which in turn causes distress to their Gentlemen friends. So who is it? Fess Up!!

Well the breast beating is understandable given that this is the normal emotional over-reaction of English soccer fans. It could be corruption, it could be that the FIFA committee are all secret anti-neo-colonial revoluationaries or that they are 15 foot long alien lizards who are anglo-phobic or that they are secretly Scottish. It could be because most Foreigners dont like the English, either through neighbourly jealousy at not quite being English or because we did used to own most of their countries and foreign types havent gotten over us leaving - sort of international Oedipus complex. Of course more likely is that Russia is the biggest and most powerful country in Europe and it was their go. I watched their presentation and it was great - the whole Russia Never Sleeps/linking east and west theme was very powerful. Bahrain have the money to MAKE the games work, to build a hotel room for every fan and to create stadia that will be donated to developing countries and so internationalise the beautiful (spit) game. If free flowing beer is NOT available, good. Surely you dont NEED to be numbed by alcohol to sit through 90 minutes of the dreary game? An Islamic tournament simply reflects where the game is going. If as a soccer fan you know nothing about middle eastern soccer, shame on you as blinkered Colonel Blimps. Face it, is the shift from the old world to the new world. We have had our go, its their go now and will be for generations. Like cricket, it is in the developing world where soccer will grow and develop not the tired, money bloated soccer playing fields of England.

Huguenot dont spoil the fun. Your fact based reasonablness is out of place in a climate of the heart wrenching mourning of what might have been had Johnny Foreigner not been so unreasonable. I understand that we have no chance of hosting the Soccer World Cup for a generation. Tsk. :))
