  1. They can compete, because like Cathay Pacific they are based in a major transport node at the edge of a huge continent which is also a major destination point in its own right (Britain vs Hong Kong). Leg room, etc are not reasons for BA going out of business. They have the experience, the profile and importantly, the slots to be successfull. They also have a mill-stone round their necks which has killed off those former state owned airlines that didnt manage to modernise.
  2. Why has the middle screen of the line of destination screens above the escalator entrance/exit in the main concourse, been faulty for MONTHS!? You cant tell what the destination is (usually ED as it happens) or what Platform the train is alleged to leave from. AND Barry - it rained today. Sort the weather out, please.
  3. Just to throw a rock in the pool - go via London Bridge - I find the Croydon option a pain as trying to find the correct platform is problematic. At LB you can buy a coffee from AMT on the upper walk-way too.
  4. William Rose (the posh-meat shop) has an outlet opposite Dulwich Hospital, this news makes me even more convinced that ED is Royston Vasey.
  5. I think a Forum trip to New Hampshire would be an grand idea....
  6. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeently easing into April 1st.
  7. BA is relatively cash rich at the moment and is covering most of its flights either through its own resources, wet hire leased aircraft of through its OneWorld alliance partners. It seems to have made a strategic decision that its short to medium term financial and goodwill losses will be out-weighed by getting rid of expensive and out-dated terms and conditions. As each strike passes BA will become better at covering its flights, whilst Unite will run out of funds for strike-pay which is currently being paid to Strikers. I think that Unite members will find themselves worse off than if they had accepted some reduction in terms and confitions through negotiation. However back to work they will eventually have to go. Willie Walsh was brought in to do this very thing, as he did with Aer Lingus, which was a loss making, formerly state owned airline that would have gone bust if it hadnt been pruned. See KLM, Sabena, Swissair, Maersk, Alitalia, etc as examples of what happends when it all goes wrong - they all went bust, a few of the brands have been brought back, but not as new, small airlines, not as major players.
  8. To be fair, if my neighbours did something that stopped me using my back garden as I wished, I would be pretty pissed off. That said, I suspect that many people would not know what the impact of next-door's bee hive would be likely to bee.
  9. You have to say Goodbye. Let her know that you will miss her, that is important for her to know. She is 90, has had some highs and lows, is in charge of her mental faculties and has decided to say adieu. She is to be respected for that. It is not for others to stop her.
  10. Noooooooooooooo!! Still, keep watching the ED Forum and so keep in toouch with dear old Blighty. Put us in touch with your local Forum, we could have a Twin-ing! A few ED Forumites might liven things up a bit. XX
  11. "Now" ?? :))

  13. Entrepreneurs create employment, small to medium sized enterprises employ many, many people. Huge employers were started by entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs generate wealth, they invest, they pay the taxes that pay for the public sector, that pay for the NHS, that pay for disability and unemployment benefits. There are many reasons why people become entrepreneurs, to say that they all do it to make a profit is a huge simplification. Many wish to control their own lives and have psycho-dynamic drivers others have no choice and are pushed into it by economic circumstances. Then there is the third sector, the social entrepreneurs whose success is measured by a double bottom line i.e. financial health and a positive impact on society or the environment. These are not charities but are companies limited by guarantee that re-invest their surplus in some expression of their corporate social responsibility. As an example the Lexi Cinema in North London runs as a local cinema showing popular films, art films and supports community events, any financial surplus is re-invested in supporting its local community and in supporting an education project in South Africa. So to paint all entrepreneurs as being grasping, profit mongers not worthy of our support is simply incorrect; however to try and describe entrepreneurs as any form of homogenous grouping is equally incorrect. Its complicated.
  14. Could be "Scott's Off North Cross Road" - slightly better address than CP Road :))
  15. It was a good evening with 6 of us enjoying Out of Africa tales from Mr & Mrs Onion. All welcome to the next one.
  16. I was once caught in a traffic jam on the A40 next to a posh car with Princess Margaret sat in the back smoking like a chimney. Look what happened to her ...
  17. Did Mrs Onion have to fight off the unwanted nocturnal attentions of a wild and untamed beastie?
  18. Surely the are bad Coops and there are good Coops? Its just a matter of available space and effective management. I walked past the Coop a few days ago and the new signage looked quite tasteful. If we are to have a Supey on the Lane, wouldn't we rather it be one with some proven ethics? There are many other places in and around ED where one can buy your organic-posh-meat, lentils (sic) and an alfalfa bean quiche; for those that want a carton of full fat and an egg and bacon flan there is the Coop.
  19. A particular piece of half-wittery is that you cannot access the Goose Green end of CP Road at all (in theory), all of the residents of Altima Court have off street parking, as do a number of the other residential and commercial properties; all of these off street parking places are accessed from CP Road. There is a barrier half way across the CP Road juntion with ED Road. You can theoretically access CP Road by turning left at the junction as you drive down ED Road, ignoring the temporary no left turn sign. I am not saying you should, just that, theoretically, you could; if you needed access to the forementioned off street parking. Do we not have right of access to our own property anyway? People using the off street parking is not going to disrupt the road works in any way.
  20. "Rain coming down like a cow pissing on a flat stone" Exercise, sporting competition and now poetry. It would bring a tear to a glass eye.
  21. I was using the gloteral stop, innit
  22. Beware Scott, you are in danger of becoming a "Chain". Such a thing is hated by the middle class lental weavers of East Dulwich. No good can come of this.
  23. "Ding-Dong, a fellow Ginger and natural as well" "Dulwichmum, your roots are showing and you are letting the side down"
  24. Hurrah! Mr and Mrs Onion are back from their Honeymoon-in-a-tent-in-mid-Wales and may well join us.
