Monkey Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Seeing Harris ED tomorrow. We already saw it last > year and are really looking forward to seeing the > team again. Hi Monkey, as you know my daughter has just started at Harris ED and so far she loves it, the staff are very engaging and super supportive. There is lots of extra-curricular activities for the girls to do, my daughter has opted for netball and climbing (all free). She also has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument of her choice (including drums)and receives small group tuition every week for free. We are very impressed so far (early days I know but no reason to feel anything other than really positive). I think they had a weird entry system in the last couple of years - part banding & distance /part banding & lottery, Carrie Senior the headmistress (who we have found to be very impressive) suggested last year that she wanted to move away from this as it was overly complicated - perhaps ask what the entry criteria will be for this year? Good luck!

Charities /schools that would like some school type rucksacks

You could try Barry House? Heber primary has a number of refugee children attending from Barry house until they are 'dispersed' to other parts of the country. Lovely thought by the way.. -
Sardinia in October - car hire??
kristymac1 replied to Minitoots's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Do not under any circumstances go with Goldcar (Eurocar), they fleeced me for ?600 on return to the UK for 'damage' - using stock photos of areas of the car which unfortunately (for me) I hadn't captured in my photographs of a pristine undamaged car. Absolute thieves. I would advise you to take out insurance to cover your excess (?1400 excess these days), my insurance cost me ?28 and covered me for the ?600 Goldcar stole... My son is fairly sensitive to new unknown things (like all kids tho'he definitely wears his heart on his sleeve). When he started reception the teachers were very happy for me to walk into class with him and then say goodbye - other parents did too, bit chaotic but set the kids up better for the day... He's year 2 now and skipped in without looking back yesterday. Good luck next week, it really is an emotional time x

What is best age for child's 1st holiday abroad?
kristymac1 replied to sam&pat's topic in The Family Room Discussion
we have used the website www.babyfriendlyboltholes.co.uk for many years (from when our daughter was a toddler right up to this year at age 11), they have properties all over the world and we have never been disappointed with the standard of accommodation or facilities available. Also worth remembering that from age 2 your child will require a seat on the plane - at 1 he can sit on your knee and save you a small fortune..... -
I'd get the boat from Richmond rather than up town, orange line to clapham and then to Richmond - the boat goes from just under Richmond bridge and takes an hour and 45mins https://www.turks.co.uk/river-trips/timetable/ , It is a lovely part of the Thames x

cgledgleds Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > In the middle! Both Harris boys and Harris Girls are very likely possibilities (and both very good schools), Charter (old and ED) less likely, tho' CED will have a bigger intake once moved to permanent site so a possibility, sydenham girls unlikely (based on this year's catchment but not previously) , not sure about forest Hill boys, kingsdale a lottery so as much chance as anyone (or so they say..) ,

I think its great that there is a facility which caters for the older children too - my 11 year old and her friends go to play spaces unsupervised and its great that there is a space which caters for all ages (I have a 6 year old too). My daughter, hopefully, is conscious of those around her (we talk about respect and consideration a lot) but I'm also sure there are times when that doesn't automatically kick in and I have no qualms with another adult 'checking' (appropriately) her behaviour, I would have suggested to the skateboarders that they use the skate park instead of the slides....

There are lots of swifts around Dovedale Road - beautiful birds and very much the sight and sound of summer for me. Heber primary school recently installed swift nesting boxes in their playground, carefully positioned with the help of swift conservation uk. We're watching and waiting but if the nesting boxes prove 'popular' over the next couple of years we may install bird cams in the boxes for the children to observe.

Advice needed on school wrap around care
kristymac1 replied to UlStED's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Breakfast Club at Heber is normally easier to get a space, I would contact Gumboots again to get confirmation as to whether a place is available from September. My experience (or my kids' experience) of Gumboots after school club is very positive - they have a range of activities for the children from arts and crafts; sports (indoor and out); board games; reading etc and the cost for up to 3 hours childcare is very reasonable. The staff are great - very engaged and active with the children - it's definitely worth staying on the waiting list and accept any days you can get at first. The school's after school activities don't run every week of term - they normally start 2 weeks into the term and finish the penultimate week of each term. The school offers a variety of activities: music clubs, art clubs, football, athletics, lego club, on different days (I'm not sure about Fridays), and children are usually limited to 2 clubs per week which all finish at 16:45. You won't be able to book these until they are announced - usually the first week of term in September. -

My understanding of it is not positive - the playing with randoms is a big no-no but also my friends (with older boys, 9 - 11ish) are beside themselves at the nightmare of limiting game time - apparently the game can't be 'paused' so if you leave you die, cue horrible, angry response from kids. Update - Harris School pupils fighting in the street
kristymac1 replied to dulwichbloke's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I would report it directly to the head - my understanding is that Harris (as would most secondary schools I'm sure) takes this sort of behavior VERY seriously. -
Have a look at the westbay club on the Isle of Wight. It's paired back and simple but a fair amount of stuff to do (sports mainly) for the kids.

Peckham Rye adventure playground available for hire?
kristymac1 replied to HLW2009's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks Renata, Good to hear its been allocated funding for improvements. I do know of the new playground by the cafe and it certainly looks like it will be an awesome play space when it's finished. I hope the two playgrounds can co-exist goi g forward, they offer different things - not just in terms of equipment- the adventure playground has a youth club feel for older kids who arrend unaccompanied - such a rare resource these days. Peckham Rye adventure playground available for hire?
kristymac1 replied to HLW2009's topic in The Family Room Discussion
That's the dog kennel Hill adventure playground rather than Peckham rye. When I spoke to the staff last year they werent hiring the space but you could set up a table/birthday space for your party (for free) - it just wouldn't be exclusive to you. I sincerely hope the playground survives in the midst of the development around it, its a fantastic resource, with really great dedicated staff, for the local community but I fear lack/reduced funding from the LA may take its toll.... wellington Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > They do private hire.
