I think Ed is actually quite left wing and would have made a very ineffective PM too (He lacked the courage of his left wing convictions too) no correlation between the two, but both reasons why I wouldn't have voted for Labour with him up top...but I guess in the Corby-cult vernacular I'm a Blairite and I certainly had had enough of Brown in 2010 and Balls was with him. Re 'Media Judgement' Fundamentally the idea that everyone except the enlightened left are somehow 'puppets to the media' is and has always been a bit laughable. The amount of the enlightened left who seem enamored with utter tripe websites such as the Canary and far worse CT type sites of various dubious provenance is quite scary - I include Jezza in this, not just his acolytes. Labour leaders get a rougher ride for sure but Corbyn is getting it in the neck from the media and his PLP (not just the Blairites) 'cos they see in the face just utterly how incompetent and unfit he is to lead the Labour Party and be a PM

  4. people are a bit addicted to crisis - we were going to implode 8 years ago, we certainly were during most of the 60s/70s/80s. I think these things will work themselves out - it's the current hysteria combined with the internet that worries me most. Post factual world and all that - mistrust of experts, continual bashing on about 'elites', widespread and growing belief in absolute nutball conspiracy theories..this leads to demagogues and I'm more worried about that than the fundamentals.
  5. I have 3 kids, 2 in state and one in private - we have experience of 3 state schools, one of which was in Dulwich Village (no names); all very good schools in their own ways. But I can tell you easily the most mono-culture of all 4 schools (including private) in terms of race and 'class' , for want of better words, was the state school in Dulwich Village, which was also excellent, no fault of anyone just house prices; so as others have said, there's plenty of money doing its thing in the state sector....
  6. The SNP are doing a reasonable job on holding the govt the some sort of account on this but they are really the actual opposition nowadays. Meanwhile hapless, useless, dogmatic Jeremy is stillgoing to win the Labour leadership contest, which will mean no effective opposition from Labour this side of a GE.
  7. guaranteed money using free bets and Betfair - just quite alot of hassle as you have to open lots of accounts

  12. So did you have Rory Mick? Even a broken clock is right twice a day etc Declan, I am trying Betmatching for a guaranteed profit - I've never been arsed before but it is free money and I thought I'd give it a go. Worth setting up a gambling only email account to avoid spamming up your normal one though

  14. Oh bog off Foxy you self pitying twat. As Jeremy said, I was just making the point that people like to talk about different things and that's a forum. I have nothing against Toffee and have no intention on 'bullying' him/her.

  16. ...do you interrupt people's conversations in pub and restaurants because you're not interested in them?
  17. Telling people what they should and shouldn't comment is what then Toffee? - it's a forum, if you don't want to talk about it don't get on the thread but stop telling other people what to do maybe.

Long > > term much uncertainty, agreed. > > > But almost everything we buy comes from abroad > (of course that can change) But that would mean a 10% devaluation will result in 10% inflation - happy to bet that won't happen. You also need to seperate Assets from that - most of 'our' assets don't come from abroad - I think Lordship's point is that a 10% devaluation means we are all poorer in $ terms, and in $ terms our economy has fallen in size - that's kind of academic is my counter argument, in the real world our economy is growing I wouldn't swap it for Frances growth (almost zero), although by a $ comparison France's economy is now 10% bigger than it was against ours in GDP terms since Brexit devaluation. Plus this (the devaluation point) works both ways eg anyone holding foreign assets or earning foreighn currency (so almost any UK pension funds/Investment fund and, of course, most of the FTSE 100, have just experienced a 10% increase in wealth and/or income on their foreign holdings/income). The asset thing is a bit meaningless. Economic growth with low inflation is what we want - and currently have.
  22. I've not been there yet but aren't an M&S foodhall and a CO-OP store different retail offers? Though obviously with some overlap. Packaged branded goods not available in the M&S in any significance for eg I presume?

Our assets have been devalued - is this > optimistic ? Our assets? Unless I was buying abroad the 'fact' that my house is now 10% cheaper in terms of the $ has absolutely no effect om me whatever. My pension value is actually now higher (nominally) thanks to the FTSE than it was earlier in the year and again, unless I want to cash it in and move abroad, it's value in $ terms is meaningless to me as it is to all of us. We may well experience some inflationary pressure as ? falls but we haven't yet. I'd be willing to bet with you it's not going to be in the high single figure areas. Many commentators thought the ? was overvalued prior to the referendum and the correction is a good thing, the long boom of the late 90s early 2000s was originally fuelled by the devaluation in the ? after Black Wednesday - Consumer Spending looks healthy; our position on the bond markets ditto; international investment is holding up and the fact that many EU immigrants are rushing to get citizenship here suggest that many of us have a reasonable faith in the future of UK PLC. Don't disagree with you on the immigration thing Jaywalker - but in all honesty it's hardball realpoiltik to strengthen our negotiations I'm uncomfortable with it but it suggests they (May's govt) are going to get us the best deal possible. To reemphasize I voted remain but now moving on and we certainly aren't in the worst or even 2nd worse case post-brexit scenario predicted. Long term much uncertainty, agreed.
