    Cameron? Anyone?

But who does? Churchill clearly - but really only the 2nd WW, after that terrible Atlee - true, radical reforming govt (but everyone forgets they were kicked out pretty swiftly to be followed by a decade of Tory rule Thatcher - saviour of the nation or satan and creator of all that is evil in the world today To my mind Wilson's 60's govt were pretty good in terms of Social Reform (abortion, capital punishment, homosexuality) and avoiding Vietnam but ultimately poor on economy and Wilson is blighted by his terrible 70s govt. It's a tough old world

  3. Don't non-grammar schools in Grammar school counties also out perform comprehensives on average too? or is that propoganda? genuine question but I saw it somewhere

    Cameron? Anyone?

The problem with the defeceit/debt is the near & medium term future not this years or even this Parliament - demographics, increased longevity and modern health and pensions costs means it will mushroom. The NHS is fucked with it's current model and sticking the top rate back upto 50% and corporation tax to EU norms is chickenfeed and not going to come anywhere near to funding it (and, in my opinion would be tax negative anyway)

    Cameron? Anyone?

I think the big issue for the Tories and the cuts were that many people (including me) believe cuts were and still are necessary - where they chose to do them wasn't always right and/or could easily spun around posh boys cutting public services. I do think, through no direct fault of their own but birth, Osbourne and Cameron have no idea how what to thenm seem trivial amounts matter to those far less priveliged. I genuinely think they just didn't get this in terms of benefits cuts etc. But we've a far more right wing or certainly more 'ideological' govt now I think. Next election the choice looks like being 'back to the 50s or back to the 70s'! in my view Cameron>May>Corbyn......none that good

    Cameron? Anyone?

To some degree: Shallow Gambler Showman Not much depth Lack of judgement But had some principles and was genuinely a liberal conservative - gay marriage made absolutely no sense for him to champion from a political point of view and his apology on Bloody Sunday was immediate and heartfelt and refreshing from a politician (in comparison with the Equivalence that Corbyn has to put in on any kind of statement against Terrorism/online intimidation/anti-semitism by comparison). Also, he managed to pull together a coalition in very, very difficult conditions which stopped this country going bankrup. Though many on the left seem to think this was not necessary....... In terms of history - the Referendum was poor judgement and but my feel is that it would have come in the end whatever
  7. Other than the occasional classic and Le Carre & Greene I've been struggling with non-fiction for years now - too heavy or too light!
  8. ...or are we all in the "Don't let the door slam you in the ars*e on the way out Dave" school?
  9. You've got some quality back in the competition pulling the average up RD :)

Louisa's would be more interested in hot air
  11. There's a fair bit of this on the "buying gold" thread LM If I was to vastly oversimplify and summarise that thread with a class dimension (anecdotally)- the more middleclass you are the more you oppose this; the more working class the more you support it.....which is interesting itself

Drinking anything below room temperature is a pretentious, middleclass affectation - to be honest it's typical of blow-ins, looking down on us born and bredders with their chilled drinks

  15. 2 from when when I worked abroad 1) I had to set up loads of accounts/credit cards, we'd recently moved and had an offset mortgage so lots of cash we could draw down on when I came back we found out that...someone* had left ?3000 sitting on a credit card during all the toing and froing (harder to spot this if you have an offset too) - meant we hadn't earnt any money on this and also could have had less on our mortgage to pay so financially was stooopid but came out of the blue 2) Working abroad and earning euros I had to do my tax return thought it would be neutral but no I got a nice tax rebate every year, still not quite sure how. First year was a pleasant surprise *cough, the missus

West Ham Jah Key players not fit yet (we were excellent for 40 mins on Saturday) Signings - jury's out but a bit underwhelming to be honest -apart from the 2 young ones who are both going to be terrific Some adjusting to the new stadium & bigger pitch Not sure why we sold Tomkins Not panicking but mid-table Europe was an embarrassment exit ( but may be a blessing) Olympic Stadium -stewardings awful - not run by club BTW; standing was ignored at UP but now not being ignored (man City had very similar problems if you reacall when they moved; as I said a few weeks back, I'm worried about the potential for trouble when we play the likes of Spurs/Man U/ Chelsea with current away fan arrangements. Onwards & upwards PS unlucky with injuries
  19. ..blast from the past - any of these changed since or any new ones? Yes, I'm bored.
  20. Drinking alone again Steveo? You should have got Jah round for a meeting - in the 80s it would have been back from the pub at closing then wine out of tea mugs until the boozers reopened at 5.30pm or invited into a directors office for a 'large one' from the director's drinks cabinet. Nowadays tedious time passing and clockwatching (i don't think many are working)....but at least we get 'dress down' Friday eh....
  21. Everyone in the office being absolutely shitfaced at this time on a Friday
  22. but that's how it worked in the past - there's a vast difference between saying schools can choose to become selective grammar schools and "from 2017 alll schools will be become Grammar Schools or Secondary Moderns" as always most opposition to change in Education comes from the deeply small 'c' conservative Public Sector unions and the regressive elements of the left (ie most of it).
  23. *sigh* They won't be like before Choice Demand etc .....or let's bung it all back to a one shop LEA dictatorship...say the Grammar and private school alumni of Corbyn's Labour party
  24. gawd there's a lot of stereotyping going on.....and I don't just mean the Brexiteers
