    Energy saving lightbulbs are like water saving toilets....you just have to flush them twice as much. Still, ticks the boxes for Environmental Agencies/govt targets etc etc

    I supsect he had little choice. I suspect most parents at Alleyn's support him. I supsect the govenors support him. I suspect that he was acting on Protocol. I think he is not the villain of the piece...I'm not sure that there is one...other than the media.

    School attendance Babysitting? Alcohol? TV Viewing I hadn't seen you as such a Libeterian BB ;-) I just personally feel deeply uncomfortable about a 5 year old cycling unaccompanied except by an 8 year old. Go up to Dulwich Village at about 3.30pm and look at the chaos. You're lucky if you make it without at least 3 knicks of a speeding microscooter.

    As Bob says "The kids getting snatched" issue is hysteria and this seems like 2 parrallel arguments to me. But I don't know any 5 year olds who I'd let ride a bike unaccompanied in London traffic....a 'learning independence' stage too far for me.

    It's not the 'going to school alone' bit that bothers me - although I wouldn't allow a 5 year old to do this ( and I used to walk my sister to school and back when I was 7 and she was 5). It's a 5 year old on a bike, in London, with an 8 year old in charge. However mature a 5 year old is I can't believe they have great bicyicle skills or road sense. TV crews in Dulwich Village at school turning out time apparently.

    Brian Close was in the Bishop the other Saturday and there was a massive 'off' and he just stood there and took 3 or 4 bottles in the face. Didn't bat an eyelid. They don't make them like that anymore.
