  1. >99% of ED residents are indeed law abiding ... but that's not the point. With a little research, some local knowledge & intelligent planning this Council resource & it's camera can be targeted on the <1% quite easily. With little or no "collateral damage." Which will enhance safety & benefit all of us. So please snap away ..... & if a little help needed on where to be & when .... a swift poll on here will I'm sure be most informative.
  2. A few minutes in Grove Vale around the Nth bound bus stop, where inconsiderate/poorly parked cars reduce trafic to a single lane & bring the road to a standstill when there is a bus at the stop ... would be most appreciated.
  3. Whilst we have had our recycling boxes/bag emptied this year (Worlingham Rd) ... we have not yet had our green rubbish bins done. (Common problem to many houses in the street, judging from the multiple overflowing bins.) Accepting that our scheduled day is Wednesday & the last two have been snowy .... Well at least for the mornings .... does anybody have any info about when the re-scheduled collection is due, or are there no plans & we are simply waiting & for this Wednesday & hoping the weather is ok?
  4. I could use this junction every morning, travelling from ED to Gallery Rd. But having experienced "all of the above" with regards to ill advised, badly judged & sometimes just plain aggressive driving, I just can't be bothered & sacrifice a few minutes to continue along East Dulcia Grove to the lights & turn left into Dulcia Village thus crossing the main junction with no hassle & avoiding the whole sorry mess. It is a complicated junction but I do think that the problem is compounded by poor phasing of the lights. Which is where the easy fix probably rests. Ditto the poorly phased lights at the end of Townley Rd, the queue at which I'm sure encourages people to use Gilles Cr ec as a rat run. Seems like the recent "improvements" have in reality created bottlenecks that create problems in adjacent Roads, which would seem obvious to anticipate ... if only somebody who lives/use the area had been asked. If the same trafic planners are in charge of the plans for Lordship Lane, then heaven knows what will happen ......
  5. Will the elephant's legs be used to dance around? Cos that ..... I'd like to see!
  6. Certainly was/are two pools. Front pool was much grander. Larger pool with viewing balcony, diving boards & much larger changing lockers. Pool is probably still there under the gym. Balcony still in situ. Rear pool was much smaller, but was modernised whilst front pool wasn't. Could well be that rear pool was for the "workers" certainly as you walked down the long corridor to the rear pool, there were side rooms containing actual Baths, which I'm sure was aimed at the poorer local residents. Think I've even seen a price list somewhere: Bath & soap xd Bath, soap & 2 towels xxd That sort of thing.... Larger front pool, was used less than the rear pool in later years, as during the winter it was boarded over & used for dances, boxing & bowls & now as a gym of course.
  7. Google Earth. Or could it be the Ordnance Survey? Don't know exactly when they last did London, but the latest map I have of the area said it was printed in 2007 but judging from the errors in some roads & areas of building the mapping could be 10 or more years old.
  8. Following list C & P from the BBC. Just an attempt to bring some balance to the sometimes pessimistic view that surfaces here on occasion. Nice to see that despite the fact that there have been some unfortunate examples in our area recently. Statistically this is NOT a bad place to be ..... My gut feeling is that the vast majority of my family/friends & neighbours do not have any direct experience with crime against either their person or their property. Sadly it does happen, but it is not the norm, nor is it to be expected. Guarded against, of course....... & actively & vigilantly reported & fought against. But we shouldn't be living in fear ... as on the vast majority of occasions, nothing will happen. 9. Agreed 1000 degrees is unobtainable in a domestic fire, but having bought, sold, repaired, renovated & replaced Fireplaces for several years I feel able to comment that irrespective of the actual "melting point" of cast iron, Victorian cast iron fire grates will deform (not fall into a molten puddle) when sandwiched between a fire & a bed of ash for a period of time. Rendering them unusable. this is partly due to the sometimes poor quality of the metal (poss cast in the 1800's) & as stated, due to the clean & very hot burn of modern fuels. Regular emptying, certainly before lighting the next fire, of the fallen ash, will help solve the problem. as will mixing the fuels used in each session. Some coal, some wood, as this will also help keep the temp lower. If the fire is a modern (1960's on) fire brick with a stand alone 4 footed, dog grate, no problem. Burn whatever you wish. But if you are lucky enough to have the Victorian originals, I would advise some caution as replacement period grates & bars are getting rarer to source & replacement may have to involve a Blacksmith, some tricky measurements & a new part that never quite seems to match the original.
  10. Smokeless fuel is the legal requirement, but be careful with smokeless coal. Particularly if you are using an original cast iron fireplace. The fuel is smokeless as most of the impurities that make the smoke have been removed. Which is good, but does make the fuel burn both cleaner & hotter than the old fashioned rather poor quality coal the cast iron was designed to work with. Best not to allow a bed of red hot ash to accumulate under the grate as the combined heat from the fire above & the ash below will melt the cast iron & the bars in the grate will literally snap & curl up like a fork's prongs. The horizontal front bars are not usually affected, as they have a constant flow of cold air rushing across them into the flames. Regular sweeping is very important, particularly as some of the recycled wood/paper smokeless fuel options produce a prodigious amount of relatively cool soot that sticks readily inside the chimney..
  11. "Magnet for badness..." As a driver I have to say that Barry Road does pose an awful lot of Road Traffic Accident potential hot spots. It's dead straight, slightly down hill & therefore with excellent visibility straight ahead. Which gives a false impression of safety. BUT With numerous side roads, some of them very busy & many of which have compromised vision as you emerge out of them. This is a busy thoroughfare which demands attention & courteous driving. Both of which can be absent. & when two equally distracted or speeding road users meet ... the consequences can be fatal. I have no evidence or speed trap proof, but in my experience 30mph down this road is: a.Rarely observed.... & if it was. b.It would still be too fast. Therefore measures to ensure a lowering of average speeds down this road & steps to ensure better lines of sight as you pull across it, would be both sensible & safer.
  12. With German munitions being slightly better than British ones & only having a dud rate at @ 3% there's probably a lot of UXB's buried under an awful lot of London.
  13. Seven Islands at Surrey Quays. Another Fusion Centre, so all same prices as ED & with a car park. 15 - 20 min drive. Nunhead, Pomeroy St. Ildereton Rd Lower Rd......
  14. http://www.tundria.com/trams/GBR/London-1940.shtml#London-SE This link shows a very rough plan of the routes as in 1940. Not much detail, but enough to give the gist of things.
  15. The section of foreshore (both Banks, but North being better as a bit less developed.) either side of the Wobbly Bridge is quite a good spot & easily accessible via large steps. As you say Tanza lots of bone, oysters, pottery & clay pipes. I was intrigued that you can date the pipes by the size of the bowl. Smaller (when tobacco was rarer & more expensive) = older. With some examples being found dating back to Elizabethan times. You can use this link to see when the tide will allow access. An hour either side of low tide usually does it. Giving plenty of time for a rummage. http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk/easytide/EasyTide/ShowPrediction.aspx?PortID=0113&PredictionLength=7 Tue 28 Jul LW HW LW HW 01:12 07:08 13:14 19:13 0.2 m 6.9 m 0.8 m 6.8 m Wed 29 Jul LW HW LW HW 01:44 07:51 13:48 19:58 0.5 m 6.5 m 1.1 m 6.4 m
  16. Multiple crossings on one fairly short stretch of road are not always a good idea in practise. My experience of Sydenham High St (4 crossings, within a distance of @ roundabout to the Police Stn.) is that during busy periods the queue for one just merges with the last one creating a definite traffic jam & bottleneck down the main road. With a subsequent slow down of the high street buses etc. & a corresponding rise in (speeding) traffic along all parallel side roads. One of which maybe a good idea, bit with the other side effect definitely being a bad thing.
  17. Tanza. I don't know for sure about Batey, but does that fact that the R Whites factory was still there on E D Rd until the late 60's, shed any light? Was one a continuation/expansion of the other? For what it's worth the R Whites factory was between the swimming baths & the Church of Scotland Church (now the sheltered accom on the corner of Worlingham Rd.) & went back up away from ED Rd as far as the current boundary of the Goose Green Trading Est. Two entrances, one at either side of the site's frontage on ED Rd ... but afraid no idea of the layout inside. All demolished to be replaced by the Council offices & the trading estate.
  18. True KidKruger but I'm not sure that any of the buildings would have been of any great size. But you are probably right about the trees.... Maybe the full title was originally "Only in Winter Crystal Palace Road" but it's been shortened over the years. The Palace was a sizable Building though. Many stories high. With large, very high, water towers at each end of the Parade. Feeding all the fountains. So not impossible that it would have been as prominent in it's day as Dawson's Heights is today.
  19. Or are you a traffic warden?
  20. Was it as simple as the re-located Palace being visible from the Road?
  21. Ultimately we were quieter for the last few days simply because the wind is from the North East/East rather than from the West & so the Heathrow planes are not approaching to land via East London. The lower stuff, which is relatively quiet, is from London City & has to stay under the Heathrow flightpath. Unfortunately, even when It's not being used. But they seems to come over ED whatever the wind is doing! Agree about the noise though, noticing it got noticeably worse after 7/11 when the flight paths over London were changed leaving one of the main stacks to feed into the final approach right over us.
  22. 45 Min's. Has been done via Rotherhithe Tunnel & Lime-house Link. Arrive at Jamaica Rd/Rotherhithe Tunnel from Southwark Pk Rd, rather than from Surrey Quays/Lower Rd. Blackwall is just to erratic, always with a huge queue.
  23. Clothing that is not of suitable quality is sold on (may even be given?) to a firm of collectors, who drive round in large green vans/lorries, labelled "something something collections" & who I believe process it & send it on to the third world. Judging buy the size of the collection vehicle that is seen outside the MIND shop this service must cover a whole host of such shops. Don't know if this to is a Charity, or indeed runs as a Business... just saying it happens.
  24. What is now the Goose Green Trading Estate used to be the R Whites lemonade factory. & the flats with the archway underneath them, also on East Dulwich Rd, used to be the factory for Everoak (I think) crash helmets. Who's claim to fame was as the makers of the funny peaked & pointed Pith helmets worn by the British Army in hot climates. As seen in if ain't alf hot mum.
  25. In view of the interesting debate this thread has generated, I've done a bit of sleuthing & am pleased to let you know that the tyre marks in the road are indicating Off Road tyres that have clearly never actually been been used Off Road. So we may all be jumping to conclusions here, as methinks the culprit will more likely be an SE21-ite! A merchant banker down to their last 4 Million maybe ..... or a property developer who bet on Croxted Road just as everybody else realised it's really just a very busy main Road! Hence the need for that Paul Daniels magic show video!!!!
