although, if one is to live one's life by the maxims of others, ouw Bwian wouldn't be first on the list Anyway, you miss the point. Unlike many (most) other games where killing is rather the point, to have ambiguity introduced gives pause for thought and reflection. And it's only baby steps compared to the future where games continue to evolve and present much more than shooting galleries But if mayhem is your thing, then there is nothing in the game to stop you (say) lassoing some scrote beating up on a woman, dragging him out to the bear-infested woods, throwing a whole bunch of meat on top of him and watching him suffer as the bears come out for a feed or leaving him on the train track waiting and waiting for the next train Just sayin...

Good tip for the cash - cheers It's par for the course for some missions in Rock* games to be really frustrating - it can take dozens of attempts to get past some and then when you do it's plain sailing. But none of them are as hard as being a prostitute in the towns... those poor girls get picked on A LOT

Partly because of keef's post, partly because of spare time over Christmas holed up with the snuffles, and partly because I regret not continuing past the hand-holding missions at the beginning when I first got it, but I fired up Red Dead Redemption a lot over the last few days and am seriously loving it An early mission had me searching out some old geezer who lives alone in a shack in the middle of nowhere. I was supposed to buy the place off him for some prospector but he wanted $200. I had $35 on me.. As I stood there thinking about ways I could raise the money, the skies opened and the mother of all storms started pelting down and then I thought about the long schlep back to town. I looked again at the old guy, out here in the middle of nowhere and thought ?I could just do him in and take the deed to the house. NOONE is going to know? But I couldn?t.. so I just schlepped back to town, got drunk and lost all my money at the poker table and switched off the game in a sulk Interesting review from Philip French ? the sometimes sniffy film reveiwer at the Observer/Guardian ? basically someone who doesn?t do videogames http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/may/23/red-dead-redemption-game-panel http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100523190602/reddeadredemption/images/thumb/c/c4/Irishsshack.jpg/300px-Irishsshack.jpg

shops where? on the Lane? mostly food shops busy at a time when families are stocking up for big meals It;s good to see the place busy but I'm not getting much pressure to buy anything If you are talking about Oxford St and the like, then that's what those places exist FOR - I'd keep well clear For Christmas spirit I was up on the lane early this morning buying some veg, stopped off in G&B for a coffee and a chat - everyone was really friendly and smiley - I felt goodwill to all people

Rice cookers rock I have one but I'd be well happy if someone thought to get me one

KK If a neighbours wifi is unprotected all you have to do is connect to it from the list on your computer/device - it's not legal still I believe but you can do it that way (it won't have a lock next to it on a list of available wifi connections) if you goto a website which has https instead of http at the start of the address you should be secure regardless of connection. Should be...

IV I don?t think people are attacking Sue for having an unpopular view (for what it?s worth at a basic level, she thinks something is fishy in the whole business and so do I, if pushed. Really hard.) DJKQ might be doing her usual dog-with?bone thing and being OTT with Sue (makes me wonder if there is history there between them?) ? I?ve been there and have some sympathy with Sue on that level But in general terms people have tried to point out it?s a bit creepy to have THIS level of interest on a topic. To say she was "set upon" is innacurate and over-emotive. It?s one case in many many many. It made the headlines for some of the reasons outlined. To have SUCH an interst in it so many years later? And by such an interest don?t just mean on a personal level ? I mean to the point of getting all upset when people suggest it might be a bit much That is what people are struggling with here Also by using your logic any nitwit could express profoundly ?unpopular? views (and you can image some of the ones that would set you off, right?) and you would expect the general readership to be passive? I don?t think so So a woman courted publicity by going public with her views, seeking like minded support, and was shocked to find that not everyone agrees with her, and with some people taking against her? Now does that sound like anyone else involved in this whole sorry business??

Double-push the home button on ipad ? only works on 4.2 os tho Your argument is that changing words changes nothing. Rosie used ?I'm not talking about banning any words, and I'm certainly not for 'wimmin' and its ilk - I'm talking about moving away from using certain words that patronise or belittle (however well-meaningly). Was the move from 'coloured' to 'black' also unedifying, diminishing and pointless?? As an example and you have, unless I?ve been reading you wrong, insisting ever since that it hasn?t helped anyone Well hold the front page but I think that for all the problems that still exist, things are demonstrably better for black people. It?s for a whole bunch of reasons but jettisoning words with negative connotations surely played a part So, let?s forget about race, gender, wheelchairs and all the rest of it for a minute Making some things unnaceptable to say is one of the building blocks of progress. It doesn?t change blinkered minds but it does mean the next generation hears it less. All baby steps of course but not negligible either To go back further? someone said it would mean not having best Actor/Actress awards at the Oscars etc. Is that a bad thing? Just having best Actor awards would probably result in men dominating for years during which people finally twig ?ah I see.. it?s because women get comparatively shit roles in movies!? and that might see a shake up there as well Ipad point #2 ? having quotation marks on a shifted keyboard is design madness. Sort it out apple

I'm not sure if "black" did turn to "coloured" but regardless most black people above a certain age, with experience of segregation in the US for example (even if it's only watching old movies) will be aware of the term coloured and it's implications. If you are going to insist on using it, best of luck to you http://www.biloxischools.net/schools/beauvoir/elvis%20assignment/segregated%20water%20fountain.jpg

I can see this on your tombstone, the very existence of which will no doubt prove just how healthy and alive you are

Let's have Josie Long and Sarah Millican instead (although the latter is making a bid for Mike McIntyre ubiquity) There are plenty more... Jo Caulfield, Nina Conti, Laura Solon, Mary Bourke..

I can say that I USED to find her funny, many years ago before the paucity of material became apparent. But yeah I remember going to see her in Exeter in the early 90s and laughing like a drain. But these days.... As to what would I call her? I go to a lot of stand-up comedy and everyone on the stage is a comedian or a comic to me. If some comics prefer to be called comedienne then that's fine by me. There are a lot of people however who will not accept women comics and they do tend to be the ones who sneer and patronise with "comedienne"

I KNEW you would take it there, as if getting a kicking is the only hardship to be endured before you can say "erm, excuse me but would you mind awfully if..." . But would I be surprised if any female doctors were able to recount tales of abuse (verbal and physical) from male patients? Not really.. and nor would you The n word might be "reclaimed" as you say but it's a fairly self-contained victory. You and I know that if we say it with venom it has the power to offend and we will get, rightly, corrected
-
Maybe not, but what you can do is go some way to restoring parity. It?s why racists can?t go around using the n word in public anymore (PC gone MAD!!!! Innit) and yes they are still racists, but crucially, black people don?t have to go about their business feeling quite so belittled. A small victory? Maybe but better than what went before So for all of my teasing with Rosie and others earlier in the thread, I do know what they are trying to see. Bless ?em (kidding people, kidding) It?s a funny old debate and one which leaves one open to accusations from anti-liberals of hand-wringing etc etc. And I know plenty of women who have no truck with getting upset over naming conventions but bottom line for me is, if someone doesn?t want to be called something then I?m wont to listen. Particularly if the person saying ?oi! Stoppit? has history on their side viz: rights, persecution against their race/gender Do I think there is a problem with the phrase Actress versus Actor? Nope I don?t and I?m happy to argue why But if women complain about it, in a world where parity has yet to happen on pay in the west and basic human rights elsewhere, what does it cost me to adapt? Women only got the right to vote in Switzerland in the 1970?s ? if I were a woman I might be a little bit more aware of the forces ranged against them

somehow I'm finding this very hard to believe.

Indeed Narnia but I would say there are other factors at play here 1) This particular thread makes a lot of people uneasy. Argue all you like, it does. The sooner it disappears the better 2) It's upsetting not just for the readers but the main participants, including the OP, appear to be getting ever more agitated - to what end? Noone is going to prove anything here, but the agitation will continue. 3) From a forum perspective, the prospect of someone saying something libellous on this thread is higher than usual - again for all pain and no gain
