Telegraphing the good news re ED
SeanMacGabhann replied to Michael Palaeologus's topic in The Lounge
Stylish, gorgeous and now famous? Is there no end to DM's gifts...? -
a gambler with a losing streak and occassional aggressive attitude?? Doesn't sound like anyone on here ;-)

Getting around as a musician in ED
SeanMacGabhann replied to KindredHyperion's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Welcome KindredHyperion (Dan Simmons reference?) I wouldn't rule out the Plough - some people on here play there regularly and find them helpful so maybe it was an bad day at the office? Maybe some of the people who play there can help out as well Elsewheer locally, I believe the Forest Hill Tavern do music from time to time and the Nun's Head have live jazz on Sunday afternoons (possibly more regularly as well) Also the new manager at the Vale (darren?) has been on this board of late and I believe they have music going as well The Ivy House is also another pub that seems to be advetising lot's of music Best of luck (you could always come along to the Forum drinks tonight at the Magdala, meet some of the regulars on here and make some contacts maybe?) -
I was dreading their introduction but I think they have done them pretty well. Am still amazed at how many roads I think "where am I??" as it announces yet another never-quite-noticed-by-me-before side road

I'm surprised we aren't hearing more about a nanny state
-
oi! what's with this beyond the pale business?? Tis a discussion and we sit on opposing sides on it... I see no-one suggesting it's beyond the pale

McD's have offloaded their stake in Pret I believe

you know what pk, I'm with you It was my initial thought as well but it was just one of those times when I didn't have time to respond and then the conversation moved on. I don't know LuvPeckham from Adam (or Eve) but quite like their posts and because it was written at 12:30am I imagine the aforementioned pints had something to do with it. Wat say you LP?

Anyone with any kind of connection to farming knows that killing animals for meat doesn't have to be the vile practice it has become in so many places - no reason to become veggie if you shop around

funnily enough blinder I look at those burgers in several rated butchers and wonder why they are even there. They don't look like they are made in-house with the same mince sold over the counter. And why wouldn't you just buy decent mince and make the burger anyway - time wise it adds about 10 mins to anyones day? As for any company becoming huge by not selling bad quality? Surely you don't even have to think for 5 seconds to come up with several examples of that not being true. As for the Schlosser book I would like it to be an entertaining romp but found it profoundly depressing but if you dispute the facts any chance you could come up with some supporting arguments (independant sources preferred to mcD's please - they have a history of .... aggressive measures countering their opponents)

I would merely state that the weather post general election in 1997 was simply wonderful, and leave you to judge on wether that's a good omen or not

I think you'll find thats cows - plural - Brendan - certainly in McD's case. Fast Food Nation Ok it's a wiki link but my attitude to food and food chains changed when I read the original book. I'd be disturbed if anyone read it, believed it and carried on eating there regardless

Well the time out article was written by resident shit stirrer michael hodges so i didnt lose too much sleep. Found it quite amusing. .

brody - like you I was commited to using the trains when I first moved to ED. I wouldn't even hear of using the buses But I soon learned that like ojm, it was a preferable way to travel. If traffic snarls, you can always hop out and catch up on some walking. I found the trains (and the gap between times) too unpredictable. But I wouldn't fret unduly - either way it's not too bad

still feeling the effects of that bus journey home LuvPeckham? :)-D

Heart rending plea... (by estate agents)
SeanMacGabhann replied to snorky's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
sorry seanmlow - t'was a slightly facetious comment on my part, given the lack of argument I put around it buying and selling property I have no problem with - and you are right, it's the buyers who make it a home But I have a problem with buy-to-let investors, in fact the general property-as-investment ethos... so it was the statement that it is they who know most about property that prompted my response. -

Dog attacked my child (St Aiden's Road) (Lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to mandyw's topic in The Lounge
No-one is surely suggesting that all, or even most, dogs are bad But they are powerful and often behave arbitrarily - I'm never going to just agree that they should be unleashed. Not anywhere with a London postcode anyway Funnily enough, watching Amores Perros last week - a film where most of the main characters are defined by their relationship with their dogs - brought most of this back home. It's probably why I'm being more (ahem) dogmatic in my responses -

SeanMacGabhann replied to mandyw's topic in The Lounge
I just don't see Peckham Rye as a "suitable area" - I've been walking through there and had a dog give me the skunk eye with a view to having a go - ok my size and the fact that I'm old enough to know how best to behave meant nothing passed off but had I been drunk/less aware/more naive I'm not so sure... I just don't like loose dogs - they have attacked me in the past, they continue to attack people today and blaming the behaviour of the victims isn't on.. -
Dog attacked my child (St Aiden's Road) (Lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to mandyw's topic in The Lounge
oooh I'd love to have seen Lizzy's response sorry PGC - I can't see the rationale behind your post - two toddlers running around Peckham Rye = nothing wrong. Not sure what is meant by unsupervised - you mean there was no parent or guardian anywhere in sight? Would that not constitute a bigger worry than their reaction to a dog? I'm in agreement with teaching children behaviour around animals - but to suggest in the scenario outlined above, that the kids were, in effect, asking for it and that people should be able to walk their dogs off the leash with impunity?? Really? -
I don't think there is a lack of conviction politic(ian)s - but I do think we the electorate (whoever we vote for) are fickle beyond words so that by the time anyone gets close to power, safety becomes the watchword the electorate SAYS it is bothered by x, y and z but as soon as policies bubble up to tackle the issues the electorate has a hissy fit - "well I didn't KNOW that meant I had to change the way I behave". Problems are always cause by other people and need to be sorted bu other people - witness the hissy fits on this forum by anyone littering or speeding. Both are widespread and in their own ways significant crimes - but look what happens to those who try and tackle them - indignation and abuse so to answer quids question, I do believe "the people" to be idiots - but that is regardless of the result of any election, not just because the results were contrary to my own belief. Now obviously that is a gross generalisation - but you only have to read almost ANY political message board or listen to phone in radios to lose the will to live. It's bad enough that people bumble around with a pocket full of nasty prejudices but to not have any clue WHY they hold them beggars belief.

EDF Drinks - Friday 9th May at The Magdala - Tonight
SeanMacGabhann replied to georgia's topic in The Lounge
looks like I'm going to miss the "eccentric" drinks... someone had better record events on Friday! -
The cons outlined by Brendan and others are true enough But the pros exist also - better disabled access, better "loading" times, ability to travel on routes with bridges which were inaccessibe to double-deckers Rush hour on a packed 12 isn't really any worse than rush hour on a 176.. in fact, if I was forced to choose....

funny you mention it Jah - I picked it up on Saturday - very good it is too but it seems designed to NOT be played in the background at dinner parties ( a la the first one)
