we're not 100% commited yet but am pretty hopeful that by September we will all be having a well-deserved indian summer, should we choose to spend it in a tent in the west country

Have to confess I thought the same thing UC - serious allegation (not the first ever made against a supermarket chain mind you...)
-
only about 3 to 5 thousand souls in a country garden populated by pheasants... and the cider bus is there of course redundant link coming up as you will already have checked it out End of the Road
-
I'm told that is my chuckle although, like most people who hear themselves on a recoding, insist I sound nothing like that As for Yo La Tengo - excellent choice - I believe they are appearing at the extremely civilized End of the Road festival in Spetember, along with Lambchop, I'm from Barcelona and others

You know what Scylla, I've asked myself that question a thousand times in the last 6 years and now I'm almost in awe of a place that can withstand the pace of reinvention occurring around here. If someone did do something with it I'd probably be upset

Should someone be building Noah's Ark in SE22?

what ruffers said (even allowing for pride coming before a fall and all) Us Upper East Siders have got the library, the Plough and Vals + a hardware store - if we get flooded up here then there is a bigger problem with the world than just SE22 (Although I also took the precaution of a first floor flat ;-) ) -
I shouldn't do this... it doesn't even reach the song proper It's filmed (badly) by me It's on a keyboard instead of his usual grand piano The sound goes out of synch But - I love it anyway Berties's Brochures

to be clear I am not accusing Ghostlymaiden of racism - just the paragraph in question didn't quite fit If someone is bitter about the lack of housing then I would understand that - but to then make the leap and claim "they are all going to immigrants" - well if it's not racist, it's neither factually correct nor suggestive of warm relations I have listened to too many London phone-ins (I know I know) where people bitterly resent the fact that instead of getting another council property, their son/daughter was "forced" into the private market. Not proud of the fact that finally one of the family was doing well enough to afford the ridiculous cost of property but resentful. I don't understand that mentality I'm afraid. Getting your own place, even if it's a tiny bedsit which takes a disproportionate amount of your wage should be part of an adult's make-up. Hasn't this always been the case? People are reluctant to even house-share these days, citing expensive market conditions but ignoring the fact that most of us had to do it for years -

Technically that would be true mp. If. You had abstained since -
but you see what I meant... Now people who buy a Jordan book either think a) she did write it or b) know she didn't but bought it anyway I can't decide which is worse Put's the whole Harry Potter - is-it-any-good debate into perspective But I did see at least 2 couples on Sunday having lunch in a pub where one half was curled up reading the book and the partner was left staring into space. It's not exactly sharing the papers is it?
-
To be fair, no-one has ever read a novel written by Jordan

I'm taking the liberty of bumping this even tho it's still weeks away - simply because there are lot's of new people on the forum lately and it may slip their attention. All welcome ! (but we will be running a book on who will and won't come ;-) ) -
The speeling mistake was noted as I pressed Post and THANK you for picking me up on it MP but the legs comment and it's possible double meaning occured as I typed. I deliberately left that one in to see if it would be picked up on Seconds later..........

I would say that ghostlymaiden (love the name btw!) 's comment "There was no referendum on whether the local community wanted the vast changes brought about by immigration, and I notice a poorer part of town was picked to supply the social housing for the new communities wishing to settle in London. " is slightly odd in that at no point ever, anywhere, has a referendum been held about immigration. And quite rightly so. If UK residents stop emigrating then they can have a genuine claim to oppose immigration. Until the however... And poorer places in town is always where economic immigrants land - that's the nature of the beast. Would it be cheaper for them or government to house them in Chelsea? Like many people living in a middle-class bubble I can be accused of turning a blind eye to various things but I really do not like the thought of people "upping sticks" just because some "others" have arrived. As an arrivee (not a real word.. I know) in this country within months of "No Blacks No Dogs No Irish" signs still visible in windows I have a real gut-level distaste for any kind of prejudice. The hostel at the top of Barry Rd houses immigrants from many different countrys and they are often to be found outside shooting the breeze, having a smoke etc. They always seem shocked when I bother to nod and say hi so heaven knows what kind of response they usually get. As for Downham v Peckham as a place to live - Peckham every time. It's near ED innit... ;-) -
The HP books are escapist fun, if not very well written I have read the first 5 and agree with Keef that 3 and 4 are worth the entrance money alone but 5 has basically scarred me for life - I know everyone says 6 was much better but I just couldn't face it - and 7 obviously rounds everything up but now I feel almost as I do about the Star Wars films - ie loved episodes 4-6, but by the time they messed it up with 1-3 I could barely be bothered - Serenity does it soooo much better But I would rather adults read HP than Dan Brown
-
Hi Richard - my you have been busy since first post! Review is on the corner of Bellenden Rd - right opposide what used to be Peckham Exp restaurant ad the Wishing Well pub

SeanMacGabhann replied to alex's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Tis great indeed Alex - and a hardy perennial on this forum - several threads have been started on it and the owners drop in from time to time (to the forum that is.. they practically live at the G&B sites, bless 'em) -

Without wishing to tread on anyones toes here, I have to confess to reading the initial post and thinking some balance was needed - which spadetownboy provided. A shop sells someone the fag-end of a batch of products - it's hardly news is it? It happens to lot's of us all the time. Sometimes the fag-end isn't too bad and sometimes it is and a bit of "an exchange" happens. I don't think it's sharp practice really. But the shop stands accused of taking advantage of your son's disability which is more serious and given that what actually happened happens to lot's of us how can the charge be sustained? Ibo - it was you who introduced your son's disabilities at the very beginning with the obvious subtext that he was being taken advantage of - a terrible situation if that is the case. But to accuse spadetownboy of focusing on the disabilities seems a bit cheeky since that is what forms the basis of your argument? As for people "standing up for bad, disreputable retailers" Ultraconsultancy - I wouldn't say they covered themselves in glory on this one but they hardly fit the "bad & disreputable" description most of the time?

I@ve read the first 3 of those citizen and loved The Corrections, quite liked the Information but didn't get along with the Tartt book. Or wait.. maybe it was the other one about The little Friend?
