When and why did ED become so poncey?
SeanMacGabhann replied to krosfyah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Louisa - some interesting points there - I don't know if I would call it a problem but it's certainly less than ideal to have areas segregated, even if it is voluntary. There was a thread way back in the day (if only there was a proper search bar - oh wait, a new one has just appeared up there ..^) about why there didn't appear to more integration in community events - eg the Goose Green fair and why different communities (not a word I like myself) don't tend to mix.. No answers of course but it is interesting -
Have I been blind all these months or has the Search box been up on the top right the whole time?

S.N.U.B Say No to Unwanted Bags
SeanMacGabhann replied to monica's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
well ideally you would go to a coffee shop that serves in proper cups And ideally you would produce less rubbish negating the need for so many bin bags -
Took me a while to realise this wasn't a Mogs post ;-) Unfortunately in the office myself - but that weather outside suggests it's a very good day to head to a warm pub/caff and stay there....

I thought the same about Golden City - has been closed for at least 6 years - Louisa? You can probably give us the history on that one Mark - that was exactly the quote I was going to use to back up my statement - but to be fair by the end of the article he was "done" with the whole concept A fairly fluffy article with plenty of innacuracies tho, so we shouldn't take it too seriously edit: my spelling and typing are shocking

but then again I might be buying champagne in EDT ;-) reminds me of a scene from Beautiful Girls where this guy is trying to impress Uma Thurman is a small US town so he asks the waitress to bring "the finest champagne" - to which she replies (witheringly) "there is no finest, they're all pretty much the same" -

hmm - can't disagree on your distaste for snobbishness or arrogance pk And I'm sure you are right - some of the well-off recent arrivals would rather move to Hackney than take a wander down Peckham High St or Rye but one shouldn't judge a book by it's cover - as I said before, people of all walks of life have their own inherent prejudices I'm not sure how you would judge me walking around ED but you as often find me in Peckham as you will pretending to be a (20 years younger) student in Inside 72 - but without knowing me you might assume otherwise.. -

Lucy - that's the problem with you poncey people - always being nice to other people ;-) Just kidding Your point is absolutely spot on, and as I said I thought the initial post was solid. It's just that it became apparant it wasn't people interested in a discussion but an axe to grind (with all due apologies to relevant parties if I have misinterpreted) Other topics are often raised by people new to the forum unaware the same topic has already been raised - and it's not normally a problem (eg "which is the best curry house?") but this particular topic just has no endpoint -

Madworld74 - I'll go one better, I'll summarise in a word: "mmwwggghhhhhaaaa" PS - you counted the number of lines? You're not that bleary-eyed ;-) -
Welcome to FU-BAR When things get on top of you and the Ranch is full of relaxed people and the Quiet Room looking after the weary, THIS is the place to come when nothing will do but an angry drink, loud music, and a comradely nod of understanding Barman - 2 Laphroigs please

Cheers Jah - as a born and bread ED'er yourself I appreciate the comment. Careful tho or we will be labelled a back-slapping clique (even tho I've only met you once ) -
I think that's why James deliberately worded this thread as such ;-) * debates going back to edit intemperate post.... *

When and why did ED become so poncey?

I know instinctively I shouldn't post a reply to this but such is the day This theme keeps cropping up on these boards again and again and is invariably self-defeating Krosfyah's initial post was a valid enough question - however Many of us have lived here pre "ponceyness" (in itself a word which gives a lot away) If anyone is worried that ED is becoming "poncey"fied and Peckham more real, then I think I see a solution for them.... The place is not full of "poncey mums in their ?500 push chairs sipping lattes and young student-look-a-likes who dress in rags and then drop money on champage at the EDT " - it just has several visible ones. As a section of society they are no better or worse than any other , rich or poor, working class or not. Some are diamonds, some are pains, and the rest are dull.... Same as you will find in any other group But I will get upset with anyone who sits in their garret, ivory-tower, council-house, mansion or whatever and pre-judges a whole group of people just because they ain't one of you.... No-one has to buy champagne in the EDT but if they want to, let them. If you fancy a simple pint of beer then you can do that too. Does beer cost more than some of the old places? Yes - why? Because those places could no longer afford to stay open... No conspiracy to drive anyone out there.. PK - your comment: "there?s a lot of ?there?s f*** all in Peckham that?s any good, we want ?nice? things? There?s also moaning about regular pubs, buses, boots sandwiches (which are all common in many ?normal? peoples? lives) and four pages about the failure of a local bar to satisfy a customer?s off the menu order" distorts the threads in question The 4 pages of reply to customer service thread deviated from the initial point to cover a lot of other ground. And for every anti-Peckham statement you will find a pro-statement A number of chip-shops have been discussed on these boards but the quality of the produce doesn't begin to compare to that balancing on some shoulders (I saw the dangling fruit and I bit.... I am now going to go hang my head in shame) -
Karter had mentioned it a few times a couple of montsh back - somewhere on NorthCross Rd
