Wakes from a troubled slumber, wondering why those images were chosen as the face of the characters he has read about online Makes coffee Drops spoon to floor as realisation dawns - these were real people, Friday night was NOT spend indoors recovering from a week(ish) at the coalface. First point is that the neighbour in question is both wrong AND out of order (ways and means) But mostly I agree with Damo - I live in what I'm sure is considered the wilds of ED - right at the top of LL behind the Plough (ie not next to NC Road or the station) but pop the headphones in, quick amble down the road and I'm there whereas the people I have passed getting into their cars are STILL driving around in circles looking for a parking spot... I. Just. Don't. Get. It I know lot's of people will say "children, lot's of shopping etc etc" - to which I would say a bit of planning goes a long way. But your choice is making you more stressed so why not try an alternative? I'm in a better mood that that ramble sounds by the way - hope to see ye Friday

There is a similar feel to the postings around this place to the ones posted back in the day about Green & Blue. It would be nice if someone from Greens (Green Room) were to respond as positively as Kate from G&B.. it seems there is a desire from most of us on the boards to see it improve - and the Sunday Fair could be the perfect opportunity for them to do a bit of PR what with it being around the corner and all...

Just another (belated) hands up to say I'll contribute... and turn up on the day -
So where do people around these parts go to get their locks shorn? As a ever-greying male my needs are modest and am always happy with Roches at the top of the Lane but have tried other places Where do you go?

Fairtrade Chocolate Easter Eggs!
SeanMacGabhann replied to beth's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Andrew I guess I've gone down an off-topic cul-de-sac here. Not sure about the type of people who use do-gooders as an insult. The people ringing in to phoneins on BBC London et al who use it don't sound like the "I'm living it while these people only pay lip service" type - they sound more like the very IDEA of, to try and stay on topic, paying someone a fair price is not only bang out of order but an affront to their ability- nay, right- to pay ?1 for a t-shirt And if you have dyslexia it's 10 times better than my typing! -

Good points BM I also remember reading about several of the big corporates inventing their own versions of fairtrade labels to capitalise on people's goodwill and they definitely were not as benevolent I'm sure there are issues behind the cuddly image of Fairtrade but wouldn't it be good if they could be discussed properly instead of the likes of the Economist going "ha! told you do-gooders!!" Incidentally when people use do-gooders as an insult what are they implying is better - do-badders? Like those American "Mothers against gun-crime" groups - it suggests there are Mothers FOR.... Not an original thought I know but the thread put me in that frame of mind -
Anyone a saturday 'Drum' regular?
SeanMacGabhann replied to drum_saturdaygirl's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Good question - after the forum wine tasting and meeting some people on here I'm not sure I would recognize them even now (my fault not theirs you understand!) If the sunshine promised by the forecast happens I may pop in -
So - did the car in question warrant a ticket or not? Or is the assumption that it was innocent because the wardens were a bit aggressive? (For a minute I thought they forced you to stop in the road and gave YOU a ticket - I did a double-take at that)

Well the clue to the relevance of the article is in the phrase "The Economist says" If we take even their own words at face value I still don't get it -
would this thread work in reverse? Guys talking about cute girls in ED? Oh it would.. in which case my vote goes to ttttttttttttthhhhhhhhh - darn... keyboard is playing up

Absolutely fantastic discussion this and well done EDKiwi for starting it Thought just occurred tho - would any close-to-monopoly landlords in the area (oooh... wonder if any exists!) would be reading this thread with interest and planning accordingly.... -

Wow - I knew it had grown but those graphs really tell the story don't they? And I was going to ask about money and sponsorship as well but you've already mentioned it. Another alternative I have seen on other boards is voluntary user donations (via Paypal or similar) Not sure how much you need (or want!) but you sure have plenty of supporters around these parts Keep up the good work JJS -

It's not my imagination that the traffic has gone dramatically up here is it? Would be interesting to see some kind of stats on number of people joining, number of messages posted etc.. Maybe Not that I'm trying to create work for our glorious Admin If you send me the raw data I'll do the rest if you like?

Mockney Piers again showing his taste, this time through music. Pretty impressive postings from everyone I remember going to see Arcade Fire at the Sheffield Leadmill last year (pretty much last show they played before disappearing) and I said to my partner this would be last time we saw them anywhere so small. I had NO IDEA however that they would sell out the Academy in brixton several nights running. Good on 'em I would add to anyones list, former ED resident Cathal Coughlan. Sometimes I do this too forcefully but still..

Well you made me smile Ant Castle story: There is a picture on the wall in there of a woman who looks about 50/60 sat in front of a pint of Guinness. If you want to know which wall have a look for a woman age 70/80 drinking a pint of Guinness sat right underneath it... Castle might look scary but it's sweet as in there. usually. Sometime I get a crazy but always had a good time -

Hi Ant - good point. There is plenty of perspective. And great people on here.. But Does it mean we "shouldn't talk about it?" The honest answer is "I'm not sure". And here is my take: If we talk about the Drum or a curry house then it's essentially light-hearted triv. If we start to measure crime stats and proscribe solutions then it becomes a lot more.... not sure what the right phrase is. I am a serious guy. These issues mean as much to me. I have my opinions on them. I wish people would genuinely get more involved in solving local problems. But serious crime (or whatever) is a national issue. Despite what we have read about south-east london it's not unique to us... whereas I would argue that, say, the joys of Blue & Green wine shop are. The South London Press (not to mention the national newspapers) do a fine job of drumming up fear about crime etc.. but there is no similar outlet for the "good stuff". We can chew the fat about the best curry house, state of dog poo or whatever on here and if nothing much comes of it then no biggie. But regurgitating the same fear o' crime stuff as the SLP just makes it a less attractive (to me anyway) place to visit. Same reason BBC London radio should be my preferred station but to hear all that bile on there everyday is just wrong If this sounds like I'm STILL saying don't talk about it, I'm sorry. I'm not saying that... It's just..well.. we can do that somewhere else. And if there was anything like a solution being offered it would be interesting ( not simple knee-jerk reactions) but it is usually "here is something else bad that's happened". And yes bad things (mugged, burgled) have happened to me. - in other places in UK (rural Devon, dodgy parts of Swindon) - it's just not very interesting to catalogue them Phew - got all serious there myself... I'll stop now In other news: Jerk Rock chicken is gorgeous, regardless of wait Cheers is indeed one of the friendliest shops on LL (even if they only ever half have a newspaper for sale) The Irish Shop is (to my knowledge) unique in South London Not sure about changes at Liqourish lately People seriously arguing to keep the dodgy sign and leaking bucket in Chener Books? If one more person parks in the bus lane at the top of LL to get cash out of the LloydsTSB I will go spare I don't do supermarkets anymore since the fish and meat places have joined the veg places but if I HAD to have a supermarket of choice then the Somerfield we have got (and not the usual Somerfield) ain't bad... Green & Blue should be an example to all of us on how to set up a business and engage with locals How come Sea Cow (top place) re-opened post-fire after a matter of days but the much smaller chicken place next door too months ?? EDT now > EDT 2 years ago. But still can't sort food out The Dave Drum is Special. The "old" bit of CPT is miles better than "new bit" The Castle is grand. The Plough isn't That Tesco Express on is the coldest place on earth Summer is coming -

What Mike said... The difference between what I experience and what I hear about is quite startling at the moment.. We live in one of THE biggest capital cities in the world so muggings, burglary, shootings etc will happen. I accepted when I moved here it might even happen to me.. so apologies to anyone reading who has experienced anything unfortunate of late But there seems to be a real glee amongst the media (and a lot of people to be fair) to say "isn't it TERRIBLE about how worse it's getting" - it reminds me of that sketch in Father Ted when the whistle gets stolen and that old dear says to the priest "oh Father tis terrible, the island is going to pot. Next thing you know it'll be murders and crack gangs" If the media were busy reporting, I don't know.. pit bulls or something lately, we wouldn't all be thinking how much worse things were... I'm not saying it;s perfect out there but some perspective please -
As it seems to have started to take over the Nero thread (that's cafe Nero, not Nigel) Like almost everyone who has expressed an opinion here, I agree that the front of Chener books is a shocker. I understand that they can't be making money, and with the rumours of landlord behaviour doing the rounds they are probably squeezed even more. That said, the stock is great and I always come away with a couple of books and a warm fuzzy feeling But if the village book shop, AND the new one on North Cross Rd can do something about their front I don't understand why Chener can't. Im no painter or designer but I'd nearly offer to supply the material and do it myself at this point... Maybe someone from the shop would like to comment on any plans?
