Polly Don't tell anyone but I have a soft spot for Balham. Back in a previous life (let's call it London v1.0 circa 1990 before I decamped to Devon) I lived around there and have friends there still. Plus it has The Bedford

Owner of The Bishop opens new pub in Herne Hill

sounds good Keef My brother has run a succession of pubs for people who obviously don't care about them as much as he does... good luck to this crew at CPT - I shall now vow to visit more often -

Keef Think we had a similar discussion on Friday - might have been with bagpuss - about CPT kitchen limitations. But maybe they could relax their NO FOOD restriction - even if it's 1 or 2 quid chippage fee to have some food from the fryers across the road (whenever they are open) -
think the Uplands does them but would be surprised if Palmerston & Liqourish didn't

New Bar - Hoopers - Ivanhoe Road

ratty - I would have agreed until recently. It's not that culturally entrenched in the UK but when I was in SF last year, more than once I was the only one without one... Second thing that made me think again was having work give me a laptop. So I would be waiting for other half in Bar Story, paper finished and thought I would give it a go... don't knock it -
Egg based outrage at EDD...now quite scared
SeanMacGabhann replied to bawdy-nan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
do I agree that a supermarket would come to my aid in such an event? Not sure EDD is definitely pricey but as I've said before food, to me, matters more than most other things so if I had buttons to spend every week it would go on good food rather than mobile phone bills, cheap clothes etc A couple of slices of ham from EDD is something you simply cannot buy in a supermarket - with the best will in the world But as for customer service and store layout - both could do with improving. And I'm not sure they aren't linked. Back when they opened - 5 years ago? something like that - I'm willing to bet they didn't know for sure how things would pan out success -wise so played safe with the layout in case it was just them and 2 customers. Now, it's the case that it has outgrown it's current setup but with rents having gone the way they have I'm not sure they can afford to expand so they have to suffer with cramped conditions along with the customers I'm really glad Easter has gone tho - I hate when the shop gets overrun with flippin chocolate (money maker tho it may be) -

Keef - you should go the the Crystal Palace Tavern on Crystal Palace Road - sounds like your type of place ;-) I love the CPT as well but don't go as often as I'd like because I usually like a bit of scran with my pint'n'paper -

I may have only met one of the pride of mummies at the CPT on Friday but both she and the other females present can hold their heads high in any company...

I remember the Foresters Keef and while I see a couple of those regs there from time to time I don't think it's they who are the reason for the bouncers on the weekends - think Piers is bang on with the pub now being a destination for people from far and wide at the weekend now -
SeanMac backtracks in case he has to, you know, ORGANIZE anything... Glad people like the idea tho back to you Mike..

Thats pretty accurate Louisiana With one possible exception - you know what to expect at Pizza Hut. It doesn't try and dress itself up as an upmarket Italian. Zizzi does and fails miserably. If you don't like pizzas at Magdala wait till you try these bad boys Oh and like GBK you will have a table the size of a large cigarette box and be elbow close to next table...

Sign of my age perhaps but I would never go near the place on Fri / Sat night. It is HEAVING with people The bouncers have been there for years at the weekend - I knew something was up when I tried to go in one Friday evening a while back and despite me being in there most weeks if not days since it opened they had no clue who I was and didn't like the look of me (fair enough I hear you say) and wouldn't let me in - one of the barmen passed my and greeted me so they reluctantly let me pass... but the die was cast Liqourish also has bouncers at the weekend but are sweeties really and the vibe remains different to the Bishop -

I liked the IDEA of Ganley's (and loved the ads in the local mags) but every time I went it was lacking... something. A bit MOR or something... and me having got a cab all the way over there too! -
The Dog in the Village has a big back yard bit as well But then even the Plough has a decent size outdoor bit - not that im suggesting it of course If we are more interested in outdoors how about grabbing a slot on the Rye - we could pop across to the Clock House if we want a pub atmos, or get some pizzas from Pizza Pan, some tinnies, a frisbee and football and hit the grass

I remember being excited when the Bishop opened as I used to love going to the Castle in Camberwell and knew that the Bishop was opened by same guy.. I've never made it to the one in Balham but am occasionally out in Herne Hill so will definitely check it out. That the Bishop has started to attract (on occassion) a different type of crowd can be seen as a good thing or bad thing. Not my preference I have to say - but there you go The Irish bar in question won't be missed by me either (and Im Irish) As for wether it's a good thing for him I don't know - poor fella must be worked into the ground. -
seen anyone famous?????? I've arranged to have my sash windows repaired and the guy who came around today is Guy bleedin Chadwick from House of Love (Shine On, Christine) I haven't actually acknowledged this fact to him yet but I can tell he knows I know life eh?

early days (about 5 years ago) when there weren't too many of them they were.. ok. Last 2 times I have tried (in different locations) it was service station quality.. bad bad bad.. Bells are expensive but I always try and give business to them - they are always friendly and helpful (and I don't need a car to go see them)

Hi Jimbo What sort of grub are you into? For classic French bistro fare (Beef Bourgignon, Steak Frites etc) I recommend Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles cookbook click on the "recipes" button here: http://www.anthonybourdain.com/copy.asp?g=2&id=1 Nigel Slater is pretty good for quick and tasty food More surprisingly perhaps I recommend getting a hold of something like The Good Housekeeping book of everything type recipe books - nothing will blow your socks off but it gives good grounding for most things and when your confidence is up you can go off-piste Oh and if you do get the Bourdain book, follow his advice and make your own demi-glace - you will never ever use a stock cube again

Good idea indeed Mr Tallin - don't forget open air movie screenings in Somerset House and Greenwich Park also..

Karter The lady in question is the lovely Polly Dorner who I met for the first time on Friday but spoke little to.. her bf/fiancee/husband I spoke to more and I can vouch for his essential "soundness" JJS
