Southwark Council parking "shop"
SeanMacGabhann replied to Pierre's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Whilst I agree that the whole "shop" thing is wrong it is only car drivers (and again I AM one so bear with me) who bleat about "only doing tiny things wrong" As the Tindersticks sang .. "tiny tears make up an ocean.." The reason motorists are so targeted is because there are so many of us - TOO many... parking on a yellow line is only a tiny thing and wouldn't have been that much of an issue even 10 years ago - but these days so many of us do it it has major repercussions - I drive but am not being milked for cash by any council - because I know the score and make sure I don't do anything wrong - is it THAT difficult?? -

Scott Mr Bishop sir, I think Tom is unrepresentative and most of us on this forum are indeed very sociable types -
When I were a lad, growing up in rural Ireland, the idea of the City in London evoked images of gentlepeople going about high minded business in fragrant offices Now I work there I can assure you that men are vile... well - 80% of them anyway (that percentage will stand up to no amount of scrutiny but I feel it's about right) - I hasten to add that I consider myself part of the 20% - or try my best anyway And I speak from the metrosexual side of the fence if that helps, James

Hugenot - sensible and still mostly a list of the forum contents I did used to have the idea of creating a site along those lines but this forum overtook it and I wouldn't want to tread on toes - but some kind of summary of forum consensus (with 2nd opinions) might be complimentary to the forum rather than in competition? I don't know.... the other ED sites don't really provide that kind of info at the moment I think

Jeremy opposite the library at top of LL are (in order from the corner) Country Spray - florist Redapple - Newsagents (pretty friendly actually - add to list) ** Vals grocers ** Chemist (assuredly NOT on the friendly list) Costcutter - strange one this - lots of people, always super friendly to me, and the owner is a gent - but feels odd DVR - estate agent Badger Bakery Think I missed a beauty/therapy place (but wouldn't if it disappeared - ho ho) -

Not like you mockney to use such derogatory languague - I bought a very nice casserole in one of those shops - and it's going to survive longer than me by the feel of it (but I know what you're getting at) Bob - I've bumped into a few Sheffield bods in my time here. I spent many a happy evening in the Porter Cottage and went to the Lescar for some pool. On a recent visit I noticed the Lescar had the exact same red signage as the Plough has going on.. now Lescar is no Top 10 pub but it's miles better than the Plough -

Before I moved here I wasl told it was the "Stoke Newington of the South" What I actually found when I first came here was somewhere that immediately brought Eccleshall Rd area of Sheffield to mind. This is a GOOD think IMO btw so I propose that -

Great thread - and I agree with most of the above posts - although Mark when you say Dulwich DIY "too" you aren't confusing it with Plough DIY are you? Dulwich DIY are down near Green & Blue. I like both and Plough DIY is nearer to me but Dulwich DIY pips it fo me because they are always that bit more friendlier and even once drove me home with some large quantaties of planks - he even took his car speakers out - true gent I see Nisha (again sorry if spelling is wrong) in Vals every day and echo the support of her but want to add the young (late teens early 20s?) guy who works in Badger Bakery when I go in for weekend bread - really nice guy Who else?: Kate and crew in Green & Blue Several of the bar staff in various bars - they can often change employers tho I would have said Nathan in Liqourish but he moved to Nottingham Has no one yet mention Tandoori Nights - the managers and staff are unfailingly ace - The guy behind the Cheers shop - don't have cause to go in there much but whenever I do.. Others - but I've used up all my goes -

Some competition for the Plough wouldn't go amiss Or a book/music shop? -

Now posting has gone way off topic - somebody can do a "Where can I buy.." thread... Actually I might start it myself, I need some blind. Back to my original question - does anyone know what IS happening up that end with a substantial amount of real estate - someone posted about the trust which owns it but no idea what the plan is -
Just slightly outside of ED I would say the Nuns Head does a good job of dealing with kids. If only I could say the same about the parents ;-) And the Magdala does a good job too I think - high chairs and that Oh and the Gowlett I've seen many a parent (some famous) with children in tow

Bit of a moan - The Herne Tavern
SeanMacGabhann replied to shambles's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
And while the spectrum of opinion on this is quite broad, I can actually see most peoples side on this - a rare occassion indeed To return to Shambles opening post tho - any venture to a Sunday pub with a friend that doesn't pan out the way envisaged is never A Good Thing at the time... For the type of drinks I imagine were in mind I would suggest a nice walk across the park, through the Japanese Gardens to Page 2 on the other side of the Rye - nice and cosy that one and I've never seen a little-un in there. Shame they did away with the pool table mind -

Think you'll find it's not a middle class thing - plenty of working class boozers have lots of kids amok in them I'm not saying it's a good thing - but I do know when I was little I used to LOVE being taken by parents/uncles Now if I'm in a pub with lots of kids I'm likely to leave - but then they are a lot noiser than I ever was (ahem..) -

SeanMacGabhann replied to shambles's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I hear you Shambles, but for such a regular on here have you not seen all the postings about the "new" Herne Tavern? When I used to get the 63 home I stopped in on occassion in the old days and I still do occassionally but wouldn't dream of it at the weekend... pubs in the day/early week evenings weekends But if you were a parent and wanted to take your kids somewhere other than a fast-foodie joint it makes sense. If you are a landlord and have seen so many pubs close down to be converted to flats (hello the Heber) and you have a choice of changing the pub or closing down I guess it's no choice at all.. It's not really specific to ED - it's happening up and down the country. We still have a few old-school pubs left - The Castle for example (not around the corner from you Shambles I know) but how often do we actually go in there -

I imagine the Irish Shop still sells them and I have seen them in Val's grocers from time to time BUT they are the easiest thing in the world to make so I would recommend that avenue -
what Louisa says.. certainly Italian chains are rife. less so Indian and Chinese although it's not so much chains as playing it safe to please perceived preferences amongst local populace. Unfortunately what might have been true 23,30 or 40 years ago is no longer the case but a lot of restuarants haven't caught up And the rumblings of late re: a Vietnamese restaurant are to be applauded so fingers crossed everyone
