DM Is that what John Wayne's real name was Mary? Oh no wait - that was Marion Somebody (male) famous has Mary has a name...
  3. Seemaa Last meetup was my first time. The paranoid me thinks that's why so many of the regulars can't make this one But there will be plenty of people to meet and they are all good fun. But you WILL suffer the next day....
  4. Mikewbate You've posted in multiple areas - must I reply to all of them??? I'll be there - so you then (or Sunday, Mockkers)
  5. Before I tootled off to Devon for the weekend I handed the transcipt of this cha to Nisha in Val's - when I retuned yesterday she was still smiling fom it. She LOVES the fact that she had so many nice comments (but doesn't really get why we spend our spare time on here talking about her - fair point I would say) On a sadder note the posting from the greenandblue gang has depressed me no end. I watched that thread unfold and thought better of jumping in (now it appears to have abated, for what it's worth I though BB had an initial point but after the efforts G&B have made on here, Bob quite rightly IMO tried to pre-empt another slanging match which got a little out of hand. G&B were caught in the crossfire but I don't think MUCH was directly aimed their way and I hope if they re-read the thread they can see how much positives were there for them) But if champagne discounts were up for discussion I'm sure someone could have let that slip on here (as a positive preemptive post?) - ok that might be advertising but still. Register as non-business people and join in the general discussion too.. We do love you on here guys

  7. Made it there on fri night for a couple and enjoyed myself lots. I dont love the re fit - very 1993 - but the staff were extra ordinarily friendly. can see myself going back
  8. Growing up in ireland in the 70s everyone was a man u or liverpool fan. I became an arsenal fan partly because i was contrary even then but more likely they had 6 irish players and manager
  9. Not only nice to see a positive reply from g and b but what a comprehensive one. as for why they could not post on the forum.. Im willing to bet that the word "special-ised" or spec-ialist was used in the original post
  10. Gasp.. Made it.. *thanks keef for web n walk heads up from weeks ago * drains a large tiger bottle says cheers to everyone offers to buy a drink to anyone from the forum should he bump into them before this chapter in his book ends
  11. TJS Interesting stuff there. Those requests don't amount to a mission-statement but could be the start of something Thankfully planning permission is not required to uproot hideous carpets - that would be another good start
  12. * that better be a metaphorical beer thinks Gab - as he is at least 3 hours from a real one *
  13. B) very droll...like it I wouldn't mind but everyone is still asleep
  14. Nero I too am up in that neck of the woods - and know the houses you mean. The chuck out the chintz campaign has not yet penetrated many of these places - but we still have to walk further than The Plough for a bevvy
  15. Doesn't make sense to refurb a pub just months before the smoking ban and allow the smoke to permeate the fixtures and fittings for just a few weeks - I shall be venturing there this evening for a nosey Mark - I hit the same problems a couple of weeks back but figured out the reason (thanks to the spam in my email, NOT through any purchase I hasten to add)
  16. Mark - you are of course right but the shop fronts (and activities therin) are a very visible manifestation of that community, hence the reason for starting this thread Having lived in some non-communities in other parts of London I knew as soon as I arrived here years ago that it was special
  17. "Who's a good little shop eh? Aren't you doing well on Lordship Lane, yes you are, yes you ARE" Oh hang on - you didn't mean that kind of patronising right?
  18. ** and lo, Polly's sleep for 24 hours affected not just her but everyone in the vicinity ** So it falls to me to wheel that huge Rank gong into the room, take my top off, shave my head and give a great big.. well, whatever it is you do to a gong that big. I know Marc Bolan suggested banging a gong, but bang is too small a word for this one. Aaaaanyway * Everyone awake yet? Good. Tis the weekend so get gamboling people
  19. Funny you mention Wimbledon village Beatnic - I happened to be there last night for first time in years and was struck by how homogenised it was - One of the reasons ED is what it is (as opposed to the Dulwich Village say) is the mix of people ie really diverse. Let's hope most people find a way to stay
  20. That's one for the "What ED needs thread." methinks Nero But it IS interesting to see so much activity behind whitewashed windows!
  21. I went through a phase where I thought it may not be a turn for the better but I think those of use who favour the indie over corporate outfit sometimes worry too much. Having lived in Swindon and visited friends in places like Croydon it's obvious what we don't want ED to become But, as I've said to some people before, LL does remind me of Eccleshall Rd in Sheffield - and that is an area that has had stores such as White Stuff for years but has still maintained it's character and indie shops the whole time. I think it's a model that can easily work if the balance doesn't tip over
  22. There was a fair bit of activity in ED about 5 years ago in the bar/restuarant scene with lot of refurbs taking place and new (however useful or useless) shops opening up. I would say that the area at that point took on a new flavour. Then it went relatively quiet again (give or take the odd G&B style addition) but with a number of premises undergoing some major-league refurbs at the moment it definitely feels like something is in the air Not saying it's a bad thing at all - keeps it all interesting and gives us plenty to goss about - but just wondered if anyone else felt this feels like a "shift" and not just a couple of shops undergoing a facelift
  23. the "G&B gang" - I like that ;-) I have had tap water in there quite recently too so it does appear to be an exception - still a pain when it happens tho
  24. Cheers for spearheading all of this Mark - I met you at the wine-tasting and look forward to seeing everyone at the (hopefully sunny-again-by-then) green J
