Would probably have to be braised for a few hours! Served with a side order of antibiotics.

The Housing Market in East Dulwich is finally slowing...?
Jeremy replied to Mick Mac's topic in The Lounge
You're right, I can't physically read the latest posts without falling into a coma. Anyway, I'm sure you're right... but mainly because of the crazy asking prices. If vendors/agents weren't determined to push the prices higher with every house which comes onto the market, then they'd still be selling like hot cakes. (what are "hot cakes"?) -
Ideally taxes should be based on ability to pay, not whether you live in a house or caravan... but the rules are the rules so it's a moot point really, so I guess I'm sort of in agreement with you, henry.

Yeah it's linked to an address, but helps to pay for services which benefit all of us. So clearly you could argue that it's unfair. Travelling is a lifestyle choice, after all.

In an ideal world I'd like to think that it if people wanted to live in a caravan, then that's their own business, as long as they leave private property when asked and don't cause a nuisance. But it's not quite that simple. Plus the rest of us contribute to our local community by paying council tax, you could argue that not paying their way is a kind of indirect "harm".

Oi! There's a thread in the main section for that kind of talk... -

I think there must be a period of at least a few years between "too old for skinny jeans" and Victor Meldrew.

I have no clue about the football, but I do think the EDT's one of the best pubs round here for beer. Always a couple of interesting beers on.

I love going to gigs... wish I'd gone to more before the baby came along and put a kibosh on that one. Not trendy ones though.

What's the argument? I've lost track. Is it "capitalism is bad"? Is it "capitalism is OK when you raise taxes and pretend it's a bit like socialism"? Is it "dismantle the banking system"? Is it "we should have spent money on diversifying the economy and investing in other industries when we had the chance"?

I've no reason to suspect that you are not well educated, ZT. And though it probably appears otherwise, I'm not completely unsypmathetic to what you're saying (the public of course had/have a right to demand that the government and the industry explained themselves and take measures to protect us all in the future). However... years have passed by, surely we can move on from "hang the bankers" and discuss things sensibly. We've all heard the indignation and outrage a thousand times already, back it up with some substance if you want to drag it all up yet again.

Beer is good. So is food. My wife bought me some skinny jeans a couple of years back, but I wouldn't wear them because they gave me a serious muffin top.

I think the point is that if you're genuinely into ALL the clothes, hair/beard, food, drink, music, etc which typify that whole scene then you're not really an individual. Nothing wrong with listening to Neutral Milk Hotel (or whoever they like), eating souvlaki (whatever the hell that is), drinking craft cans, getting tats, or even dressing in stupid clothes.. but when you put all of them together you're just a walking cliche. By the time you're a proper grown-up you should just be able to pick the bits you like.

LadyDeliah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What is inherently dodgy about someone > knocking on a door and riding away before you > answer the door, then explaining that it was the > wrong house? It's unusual. I've lived in South London for a while now, not once have I had a stranger knocking on the door in the night. Then realising it's the wrong house before anyone even answered (and the 'right' house is far enough away for him to get back on his bike)... pretty strange. Of course it could all be perfectly innocent (and probably is), but I'd at least think "what the hell was all that about?" Just because you personally wouldn't find the situation suspicious, it's unfair to declare that it's categorically not dodgy. From the way some people are carrying on, you'd think that the OP has already made up his mind that the kid was guilty of something. But I don't think that's the case.

Was kind of a throwaway comment... cost of living is high in all those countries. But GDPPC also much higher. I'm not at all against higher tax if it results in a more equitable society, higher living standards, better public services, etc. But would question whether it's possible to emulate that style of economy within the EU.

I'm as critical of DMC as anybody, but insisting on an appointment outside of school hours is probably being a bit too picky. -
