It's unfortunate, but to be blunt I'm not sure it's an adequate reason to effectively stop young children cycling. As jimbo - and others - have said, the key is to teach children on bikes and scooters to stop for pedestrians.
  2. Not sure how you could have got through the last few decades without hearing "Losing My Religion", but yeah... great song, great band, if you like that then they have a large body of work to explore. If you like that, then maybe... Teenage Fanclub - Mellow Doubt Sugar - Changes The Get Up Kids - Stay Gone
  3. The food has always been bloody horrible there. The same chain, but with a refurb and a bog standard hotel shoehorned in above it... not sure what you were expecting! Hopefully it will still be nice for a pint and bag of crisps out the front in the summer, but would never consider eating there.

Taxis (both minicabs and black taxis) charge for time as well as distance, so if you're stuck in a jam it still costs you. The comparison makes sense to me. The real question is whether there will be a plentiful supply in prime areas. I'd also be slightly worried about the drink driving aspect, people using them to get home late after a night out.
  5. Yep.. FFS babies and little kids are bloody hard work. There's no way of saying this without sounding like a prat, but if you don't have kids then you simply won't get it. A bit more space to get them in and out of the car, and a shorter walk to the store makes a difference... I imagine (I've never actually managed to get one of the spaces)..
  6. Rosie's and Codfellas both decent. Fish probably not as good as Seacow, but chips are better (and let's face it, the chips are just as important)
  7. ?5.30 for a pint of bitter? No, I've never seen prices like that. It should be more like ?4, surely?
  8. Oh right I see what you were getting at. Yeah I think it's fair to say that if a driver can't execute an emergency stop in time to avoid shunting another vehicle on a 20mph road (or even a 30mph road) then he's driving badly. But there are plenty of bad drivers out there...
  9. But why force a driver to slam on the brakes with almost no notice? Yes the driver should be able to stop in time, but why would you risk your own safety like that? Makes absolutely no sense at all, and I'm amazed some people apparently believe there's a case to be argued. [by the way, the two second rule concerns driving behind another vehicle, and is not applicable to pedestrian crossings]
  10. Yeah of course if there was an accident on a zebra crossing, I'd expect the law would fall on the side of the pedestrian every time. But that's not really the point. There are bad drivers out there, so be careful, and look after yourself and your kids.
  11. EDG is a very convenient location, but I wouldn't want to be on such a busy road with two small kids. And if you drive, parking is likely to be a pain.

That really is a shame... for about a year after having our daughter, that was probably the most useful shop in Peckham. Especially as the large Mothercare on Old Kent Rd is also closed now. I notice that the Pedler team were describing BPB as a "pop-up" which had come to an end, but the truth is that it really wasn't very good. Pizzas with sloppy centres and thin watery sauce. Sounds like the new guys have got it right. (I like Pizza Pickup too, and makes a change from the ubiquitous sourdough base)

As long as they're focussing on the right things - NHS, education, fighting against "hard brexit" (or brexit altogether?). The main things which concern many of us about the last (and likely next) administration.

I know that the result is better than most Labour supporters were expecting. But surely it's still a missed opportunity. Conservatives/May ran a terrible campaign. A more moderate version of the Labour party would have probably won a majority. Then we really would be in a position to do something about NHS and education spending!
  15. I don't mind admitting that if it was me, I would have been out of the house like a shot. Sounds like it probably got in through the door, as it would be too big to get in through holes in the floor/walls. If it ate the bait, then just wait for a foul rotting stench to appear in a few days..
  16. Of course kids should be allowed to cycle on the pavements. Anyone injured through no fault of their own has my sympathy, but accidents do happen... it's not necessarily grounds for saying that we shouldn't do something.

I didn't even know it was still going.. but isn't it more for the dads these days?
  18. Yep... as Andrew Neil said, pathetic Pound Shop terrorists.

  20. I could hear them quite clearly round Peckham Rye... with the windows closed. Yeah I know it wasn't for very long, but it's still selfish and unnecessary.

jaywalker... I'm a bit on the fence about railway renationalisation... I'm sure many public railways work very well indeed. Several private ones do too. I wouldn't necessarily advocate privatisation in the first place (as you say, natural monopoly), but I think there are other ways of addressing the problems. Similar with utilities... I've no ideological problem with private ownership but there are serious issues with the way the industry has been set up and regulated. And it all seems like it's going to be very, very expensive. Especially with utilities, I think John McDonnell was suggesting they'd buy the shares up...
  22. Use a fake photo. David Hasselhoff from "The Young and the Restless" years is always a safe bet.

Theresa May has been awful... just awful. Meaningless soundbites. Nauseating nationalist jargon. No acknowledgement of where/how things are going wrong in this country. I must admit I'm starting to admire Corbyn. He's ran a good campaign, and at least he's put together a bold manifesto that actually offers some kind of vision. He's got a lot better in front of the camera, he's gained confidence and authority, and when he talks he offers substance. But I can't agree with the mass nationalisation programme, and the manifesto "costings" seem like finger-in-the-air stuff. Still leaning towards the homophobic god botherer.
  24. They are actually very good at the moment! Although how long that will last for, I don't know. If you are within walking distance of Peckham Rye or Denmark Hill then you do have some backup options.. Overground is reliable (and air conditioned!), even if it's unlikely to get you to your final destination. Thameslink trains are unreliable and crowded, but the routes are useful.

The Canary is absolutely terrible, I despair at the number of FB friends who link to this garbage on a daily basis.
