  1. Is food in pubs actually "new"? That's not really how I remember things.
  2. DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What exactly is the problem with fake coins ? Off the top of my head.. the businesses that take them may be unable to pay them into the bank. Reduces the government's power to money supply and therefore inflation. And also, what dodgy activities the proceeds might be funding...
  3. Personally I consider myself to be tolerant of those who are intolerant towards the intolerant.
  4. Does being a tolerant nation mean being tolerant towards the intolerant? I'd presume not...
  5. I think it makes more sense to rank individual pubs. Particularly with Antic and Fullers, they vary so much, and the menus are often completely different. M&B is consistently poor though.
  6. quids - I don't buy this "Scotland good, England bad" narrative that you describe, either. (Although IMO you exaggerate how tolerant we are as a country). It's more a question of terminology. Growing up, nationalism for me was synonymous with the BNP (John Tyndal era), with their unabashed racism, policies of repatriation, etc. Which seems to have little in common with the current Scottish nationalist movement.

Do you read Private Eye? > Government procurement is legendarily awful. I suspect if it were a government project, it would probably still be stuck in cycles of feasibility studies. Perhaps a few junior PwC consultants would be buzzing around, working on a "business transformation and streamlining" project.
  8. I know I'm stating the obvious, but the word "nationalism" actually has rather different meanings depending on context. When we talk about English nationalism, we're mainly talking about far right politics and extreme patriotism. Scottish nationalism is focussed on self governance, and dominated by left wing policies.
  9. Yep, we're currently on the reduced timetable that was introduced due to works at LB. I understand that the Thameslink platforms won't reopen until next year.. whether this (and other ongoing construction) has any bearing on our service, I don't know. But I strongly suspect that we're being shafted, and the reduction is permanent.

  12. I thought the Thameslink delays were down to a broken down train around Kings Cross? Anyway... after standing on a crowded sweaty train for over 1hr, we all had to get off the train in the middle of nowhere and walk it.
  13. Power out round Surrey Quays. Avoid!
  14. What is a mattress in a box? I tried googling but it was far from obvious...
  15. Louisa Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I wasn't trying to be antagonistic I think you probably need to work on that a little bit more!
  16. Louisa Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I presume you mean me? I'm sick to death of being > vilified for having an opinion about anything on > this forum. I won't say anything from now on. Yes. But I don't think I was vilifying you. Suggesting that a) restaurants call them "escargot" to achieve a higher price and b) people wouldn't eat them if they were listed as "snails"... is antagonistic and a little confrontational... no? It was not meant as an insult. > Someone has already mentioned the ?2 mark for one snail at > restaurant price. A figure seemingly plucked out of thin air, which is then being used as the basis for an argument (sound familiar?). I reckon ?8-?10 pounds for 6 is typical.
  17. L - didn't mean to suggest ALL places on the list are there because they're considered trendy, but certainly some are. Frome... I've no idea, never been there. RH - we're showing our age... I don't think anyone under the age of 40 would consider FF even vaguely cool. Even my dad likes them!
  18. Isn't this a case of Sunday Times just pointing out places that are vaguely trendy at the moment? (See also Bristol) It will fall off the list soon enough.
  19. Anyone been to this place (Queens Rd Peckham)? http://meetdistrict.co.uk Steaks and burgers... could be interesting. Despite the abysmal name.
  20. DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Had no idea what a "steak hache" was so had to > Google it. > > Came back with 'A Posh Burger' from France. Not my > words.. Ha... yeah that's kind of what it is. Steak burger served with some sort of gravy/sauce and fries. I remember it well from French family holidays when I was a kid... it was always on the menu in motorway service stations. The Japanese have something similar they call a "hambagu"... beef patty served with rice, and a sweet tasting gravy.
  21. DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > All the Fox said was 'Snails Yuk' That in itself is fine of course, but ... "they refer to them as Escargot so it sounds posh" .. surely that is a bit silly? Although tbf you were not the main antagonist. > I can't chew that side yet and want to sample > their steak. Otherwise it's Onion soup. I think they actually do "steak hache", rather than a proper steak... don't think you'll have any problem chewing that!
  22. This basically boils down to "I don't like snails so therefore anyone who does is a mug". It's all been done before... and it's all a bit daft... and boring.
  23. French restaurant using French terms on the menu shocker. They're not really posh, or fancy, or all that expensive - a Frenchman would probably laugh at such a thought. Maybe just accept that some people like them, and some people don't...

  25. I once saw Gordon Ramsay cook garden snails on TV. He put them in a jar with pieces of carrot to eat.. after their poo turned orange, they're "detoxed" and ready to cook. He fried them with pancetta and served them with salad. It looked pretty good..
