Xoco grill - closed for good - Memsaab now open...

Is there actually a place on North X Rd selling hot dogs for ?7.50? -

Not really the same though, is it? 'toads in the hole' seems to indicate multiple toads within a single hole, it is not really analogous to "mothers-in-law". Conversely, "toad in the holes" suggests a single toad which has been split amongst several holes. Far from ideal. I would suggest "toads in holes", or perhaps simply abbreviating it to "toads" if the context will allow.

Didn't the Dogfather place stop trading a few years ago? Were the hot dogs really ?7.50? Where's your source, Fox? According to here : http://www.helengraves.co.uk/2011/03/27/the-dogfather-east-dulwich they were around the ?4 mark. -

This isn't a problem I personally face as my work are cool(ish) about it, but leaving half an hour earlier certainly isn't an option. As for getting the bus to work... it would be only a matter of days before I had a genuine "Falling Down" moment..

Yeah the viet van is pretty decent. Is the churros guy still around? They were good. Nothing pretentious about them at all. Not an enormous fan of the hog roast (he seems to mush up the meat instead of slicing it) but he seems popular, so must be doing something right. -
If you're happy in the area... remember that much of ED is walkable to Peckham Rye. Where you also have Thameslink and Overground trains in addition to Southern. If you want the tube without necessarily higher house prices, go East. Look at places on the Central or Victoria line. Wanstead for a quieter area with lots of families. Walthamstow for somewhere more edgy/"up-and-coming". The Central line is good as it's quick and goes through both the City and the West End. Clapham is quite a bit more expensive than ED, and you'll find it very hard to get on a train at peak time. Balham is OK I guess.. lots of junior bankers and rugby boys though. Greenwich and Blackheath (the good bits at least) are quite pricey... but nice places to live..

Re: Bakerloo line extension - have your say for Peckham Rye

PR, I agree that the route is probably the right one overall. But by moving the "Old Kent Rd 2" station a couple of hundred metres to the south, it could have been an interchange with QRP, providing some much needed connectivity to the Southern and Overground routes. -
Half Decent curry near waterloo / royal festival hall ?

Yeah, most Indian people I know don't seem to go to the regular anglicised, Bangla-type curry house type places. They either eat in simple Indian caf?/canteen type places (there used to be a popular one near my office), or they go for pizza, chicken, burgers, etc. Although I did once take some Indian colleagues to Cinnamon Kitchen in the city, and they really liked it... -
Nigello Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Peckham (or anywhere) has changed a > lot then why should it not change some more? I'm all for embracing change. I agree that Rye Lane could certainly use some smartening up, and to be frank, I do not use the butchers, fishmongers, mobile phone shops, and afro beauty shops along there. I do use caf?s, bars, restaurants, delis, etc... so I'm not going to be hypocritical here and pretend the changes are unwelcome. But I'm still not comfortable with the idea of moving all businesses of a certain type, for a certain ethnicity of customer, all into one place. Which is exactly what the "Peckham Palms" proposal is...

As rrr and jrk said, the closure of the ED deli is a clear opportunity for the cheese block. They already do plenty of other stuff apart from cheese, but re-launching as a proper deli should give them a certain amount of protection from the new competition. Whether they're willing to embrace the opportunity and the necessary changes is another matter...

Jah's right, it does stink of social cleansing. Whether they get the same sized units for the same price, is (IMO) beside the point. They want to stick all the hair and nail places all together, out of sight, and release the prime properties on Choumert Rd, Blenheim Grove, etc for new businesses paying higher rent.

Titch is right, just because somebody is doing the job, that doesn't make it OK. Otherwise why have any minimum wage, maximum hours, and other worker protection at all?
-
These things are often subjective. PP is great value either way.

The throat is not an easy target to punch, you'd be better off with a "chop" or grabbing the adams apple. But either way - and although I don't know you, John - I suspect that against multiple attackers, having the shit kicked out of you would be a more likely outcome, than you finding yourself in court. -

I agree... martial arts or self defence techniques are only going to help if you practise very regularly. And even then it's probably not going to be any help at all in a 2-against-1 situation. Putting one of the guys away with a single punch is beyond the capabilities of most of us, you're probably just going to piss them off, and earn yourself a much worse beating. -
Sounds like people have good reason to be pissed off, but I'm not sure how this interview makes him a hypocrite?!

titch juicy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is that right?! Yep - well actually it looks more like five years. The "Peckham Levels" thing is only temporary, after that, the council plan to demolish it. However - five years is a long time, and I dare say there is still potential to save the building. http://www.peckhamvision.org/wiki/Multi-Storey_Car_Park But these new Council plans are just on a temporary basis. They say they are just for the next five years before the site is up for redevelopment. This means demolishing the cinema part of the building as well as the car park parts now showing their significant potential.

Jules-and-Boo Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It's very clear that they could 'gentrify' but > that's actually an ethical decision I thought the building was due for demolition in a couple of years? I don't think there's any scope for PP to go all fancy, even if they wanted to.
