  2. Quite - funding is the main issue. I'm not going to pretend that abusers and timewasters don't exist (from all walks of life) but it ain't the only issue...
  3. So only immigrants are guilty of "bed-blocking"?
  4. Nigello - the problem is that London is a very old city with narrow streets. Even with dedicated bus lanes (which we already have to some degree) it's always going to be a slow service. I did chuckle about the "Londoners, blessed with the world?s pre-eminent public transit system" line. Compared to where??
  5. I think he was just a pragmatist who realised that a centrist party in power was better than a left wing party in opposition. It's not an unreasonable position, even if you don't agree with it. But yeah, obviously the war thing... for most people that cancels out any good he did (and then some)

  7. Let's face it... Blair had many qualities which are currently lacking in Labour.
  8. In theory, I'd hope that a local restaurant with a shorter menu could do better food than somewhere like Zedel, which is a little bit "pile-em-high".

They did clean it up though. And we did try it (and enjoyed it).
  10. Le Moulin... I thought it was OK, but NOT French!

  12. BB have a menu on their Instagram page.. mains around the ?15 mark. Side veg ?3. So priced slightly cheaper than Franklins, Palmerston, etc.
  13. I agree KK, most women would probably expect at least a card. I've no problem with that - I'm not some sort of miserable miser - as long as it's all taken as a bit of superficial fun. I even bought a bottle of champagne last night (but ended up drinking most of it myself... hic...)
  14. Sad reading, RRR. But reinforces my belief that quality of life for the poorest is a much more important indicator than the wealth gap. Who cares if the super-rich have taken a knock, if things haven't improved at the other end of the scale?
  15. If you're on a PC (not a phone/tab), try www.befunky.com. Very good, free online image editor.
  16. TBH it's a bullshit day, even if you're in a relationship... it's not really "special" when you're doing the same thing as everyone else, (and paying twice the price for your dinner) is it? As for secret admirers... anonymous cards and gifts sound a bit stalker-ish to me. Why would someone over the age of 15 do that? You're better off without. Now go and join Match.com like everyone else!
  17. The bus is a completely unsuitable method for commuting from SE London into the centre. The time it takes is completely disproportionate to the distance travelled. And 1hr (or more) of stop/start traffic (often with a heavy-footed driver) leaves me feeling very travel-sick. I guess they can be useful for local journeys of 2-3 miles though.
  18. We ate in Pizza Pickup on the weekend. Quite nice pizzas.. crispy and thin, rather than the chewier sourdough type. Will be going back, and TBH I much preferred it to a certain other new pizza place nearby. Although perhaps a little expensive.. IMO.
  19. I think we have enough restaurants already though - and there are already (at least) two new restaurants in the works in ED. John Barnett is an excellent shop, especially for kids. If they really are expanding, then it's well deserved.
  20. Basically... wot ali2007, Mark, enjoy and other sensible people have said. It's a pretty normal thing to do. And besides, you shouldn't presume to know their circumstances and reasons. I'm sure everyone is OK with people questioning such things, but it should be possible to do so without being nasty about it.

  22. You mean Canada Water, of course, Rendel. I think the rail transport from PR is adequate (reliability and industrial action aside). But it seems to me that the Bakerloo extension should really connect to Queens Rd Peckham, instead of the "Old Kent Rd 2" station. That would provide really useful connectivity for the Overground and southern routes.

On the corner near Subway, Mothercare, etc? A pretty inconspicuous addition, IMO.

Yeah, that's basically my take on it too. I very rarely saw the venue section particularly busy - even going back 15 years or so. Maybe they just didn't get the right promoter(s) on board. But signing a petition to save an underused venue seemed like a bit of an empty gesture. On the plus side, I don't mind Fullers pubs/beers, and if it's a nice refurb then it could be a winner. Decent local hotel rooms will be useful too (and probably a better prospect than the budget hotel they're apparently opening in the village).
