Well yes... the banks could use biometric devices or something, but they choose not to... but I'm sure that people would still find a way to crack the technology (although it would be harder to do). But I don't see how they are more to blame than those who steal the money. It's like having your car stolen, and blaming the car manufacturer for not making the car more secure.

I know that SMG is the voice of reason here, but for me the weight of circumstantial evidence against the petrol station over the last couple of years is too much to ignore. I remember the first time there was a card cloning thread on here... the recent "victims" all PMd each other, and there was only one place we'd all used our cards recently. You would think that you'd have to be pretty stupid to use a cloned card at the same place it was cloned at... but I wouldn't put it past them.

In reality, some women tend to get a bit more freaked out if they think someone may be "watching them" (at least, I think so). And also sometimes men may be more likely to cross the line when discussing the object of their secret affections.

It's a ridiculous question, because with 9 our of 10 candidates, you will just get a stock answer ("I concentrate too much on the details", "I agree to take on too much work") etc, etc, which they've just read on some website. It tells you absolutely nothing about the person at all.

The 8.9m is for "traffic transport and parking" which surely covers much more than just traffic and parking enforcement! This doesn't really give us an indication as to the costs of traffic and parking management alone. I don't really have the time to search for evidence, but I am far from convinced. I'm not amongst those who believe that parking tickets are a "cash cow", but I do believe that the commission-based systems in use results in unfair or unjustified tickets. And even if the council don't profit from it, others clearly do.

Shabba Ranks Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > how on earth can we as a > society allow dogs, that traditionally are bred > for fighting, to walk around amongst children > without a lead or a muzzle? I do tend to agree, but I'm sure there are lots of responsible owners, whose pets are not aggressive. On the other hand, there are irresponsible owners, who own these dogs with the aim to intimidate people or worse. Something like a rottweiler or an alsatian in the hands of these people would be more dangerous to the public than a pitbull/staffie in the hands of a responsible owner. So classifying dangerous dogs by breed is a bit of a blunt instrument.

Huguenot Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > according to Southwark's figures the 8.9m cost of > maintaining and running traffic & parking > management schemes far outstrips the 1.1m in > revenue they generate. Where is the source of this info? Sounds highly dubious that the cost of issuing and processing a ticket would be that much (8 x ?60 = ?480). It certainly shouldn't be the case...

Huguenot, the "spirit of the law" means nothing when we have traffic wardens on a commission.

If it has a history of attacking people and other animals, it should be put down.

Good post Snorky. I am not exactly the patriotic type, but that whole episode came pretty close to making me feel proud to be british.

Yeah, same old story... heard it all before. I could pick holes in almost every claim in the original post, but can't be bothered. But SMG is right, the tone on the forum hasn't been great recently. There seem to be a few new posters who either have a chip on their shoulder, or are just wind-up merchants. Happy to generalise all "newcomers" as snobs and racists, who have ruined their beloved suburb beyond recognition.

It's all true... Ann Summers is opening up next door to M&S and Richer Sounds! Everything you need in life from 3 adjacent shops.

It's very hard to get a table in there on the weekends - Sunday lunch is a very busy time, you always have to book ahead. Do you expect a fully booked restaurant (which is basically what it is) to start re-arranging tables and chairs to try and squeeze in someone that hasn't booked? As for the racism angle... even the suggestion is paranoid, and pretty offensive.

Yep, seen plenty of rats round Sainsburys and Dulwich Hamlets. I'm sure it wouldn't really chase anyone, or "take down" a child!

TLS has possibly taken some comments rather too seriously, and allowed himself to get dragged into something of a flamewar. But it's not all his fault, too many people have waded in to have a pop at him. Let's not get too personal with our bickering...

They are terrible. Getting an appointment or even a repeat prescription is a nightmare. They're often not open when they say they will be. I've not even had a proper reply to my latest complaint email.

The council don't have to send someone into the hearing, if it goes that far. They usually just represent their case in writing. As I say, I would only appeal if you are confident of winning.

What a decent bloke! Don't understand your last sentence though...

The duck & hoisin ones sound like they might work. I don't see how they could get onion bhaji wrong. The others sound horrid.
