  1. The rush hour service is already too infrequent. I expect that if this goes through, the commute will become unworkable for many people... the choice may even boil down to bicycle, motorbike, or move somewhere else. Unfortuantely I doubt that Tessa Jowell will be able to do anything about it.
  2. This is the first I've heard of it, which is surprising (although I already knew about the Denmark Hill thing). If the East Croydon route is closing, it looks like it will mean the end of the 7:29 and 8:35 trains in the morning from ED to London Bridge, and then two trains an hour during the daytime (at 16 and 46 minutes past). It doesn't look like it will impact evening commuter services.
  3. I'm 36 and my name is Jason Statham, the finest actor in England. (possibly second best in the world, after Alec Baldwin).
  4. You're saying that the service from North Dulwich/East Dulwich/Peckham Rye to London Bridge is being reduced to 2 trains per hour?
  5. Technical and engineering skills - yes, definitey (but these surely require degree level eductation?) Manufacturing - no, because we can't compete, as Huguenot said.
  6. I don't know who buys those new-build flats. They're not cheap, and decrease in value straight away. Build quality is often questionable, and are invariably built in a "contemporary" style which will look tacky and dated very soon. That Foxtons office has always looked empty ever since it materialised... I wonder how many of the drinks in their glass fronted fridges have been there since 2007.
  7. Haha, thought that would get a response from you, AFN. I'll have you know that the beige dockers + sandals combo is all the rage! Especially with some nice "diamond pattern" socks.

If they really did live in Putney, I could understand them driving the kids... the 37 bus is the least effective form of transportation known to mankind. And this is a primary school, so not necessarily safe for the kids to travel on their own. However, I suspect that most of them live within a mile or so.

To add to this... the government are definitely spending a lot of money on NI. They are giving large companies financial incentives to set up offices over there, and it's seen a lot of regeneration. It's not like England "stole" Northern Ireland and then left it to rot. As far as I can see, it's being treated as a priority.
  10. I like the way one poster asked if it was OK to wear jeans. Have you *been* to Nunhead before?!
  11. You need to be very organised to buy at auction... valuation (and maybe survey) completed, mortgage agreed before the auction. Before you even know if you're the winning bidder. And as someone said, there's a risk of losing your 10% deposit if you can't get conveyancing completed in 3-4 weeks. So it isn't really an option if you have a property to sell. It's more suitable for investors (who naturally will be willing to pay a lower price than someone actually looking for a home).
  12. I wonder how many of them live within comfortable walking distance...
  13. What ratio of properties are being sold at auction vs traditional channels, at the moment? I don't know. But unless you have those stats to hand, how can you say that auctions are the norm?
  14. Someone should start a helicopter shuttle service... chinooks running between ED and the City / W. End all morning. The trains are usually OK, but the frequency always seems to be the worst when you need it the most.
  15. The problem is that reposessed properties at auction traditionally go for up to 40% less than the rest of the market, so this isn't a meanigful comparison. Is buying at auction really becoming "the norm"? Bit of a sweeping statement...

  17. Moos, you are of course absolutely right... but you should let the boys have their fun, pretending we're all hot-shots and attempting to pass off our opinions as indisputible fact.
  18. Well, quite... you may have an "opinion" that CHF will outperform GBP, but you can't be sure... I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to expose their entire lifes savings to the FX risk.
  19. Oh well, Pie-man... I shouldn't complain, at least I can rule you out as a possible rival.
  20. Really... I thought my ex-colleague's boss's wife owned it (seriously). The plot thickens.
  21. I briefly lived in Basingdon Way, and I heard rumours of a "characterful" pub in the nearby area. I guess this must be it. EDOldie seems to be a fan of this place and The Castle, could I deduce that the two places are cut from the same cloth?

  23. OK. Greendale 44 Wanley Rd London SE5 8AT So it's not on Greendale at all.
  24. OK... I know where that road is. But I couldn't find any evidence of a pub on that road using any of my usual resources.
