Flatliners? ;-) Although "Flatliners" was obviously a superb piece of film-making, I am actually referring to this: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/is-it-possible-to-have-an-outofbodyexperience-935423.html
  2. Yep - death after life sounds about right. It seems unlikely to me that someone would believe in some sort of afterlife without being religious... but you never know. Needless to say, the whole thing is totally ridiculous to most of us here. The idea that your soul/consciousness/personality could exist outside of your brain seems absurd to say the least. Although interestingly... did anyone read about the experiment taking place in various hospitals, in an attempt to validate "out of body" experiences? The idea is to put objects or messages around the room, which can only been seen from above. Obviously a complete waste of money and resources, but presumably it's something of a low budget experiement, so I'm not getting too worked up about it.
  3. Do you not find the Sunday Buffet a bit... manky? Curries are even greasier than usual, made all the more unpleasant by the lukewarm temperature. Tandoori chicken usually consists of scrappy little bits of drumstick and wing. And there's often some sort of ambiguous looking deep fried sort of "fritter" things. However, I will admit that it represents reasonable value if you eat enough to keep you going for the whole day.
  4. Isn't there also a crap American metal band called Quorn?
  5. It's a joke... a large proportion of the American population don't really *care* about foreign policy, anywhere near as much as they care about their "heartland values". Palin in particular straddles the line between conservative middle class family woman and gun-loving redneck, which is bound to appeal to a large demographic. They don't care that she only got a passport last year.

Someone was saying a similar thing about the US bail-out and world hunger. But it doesn't work like that. With a stable economy, everything else collapses.
  7. Speaking of arson, there's a burned out car on Quorn Road this morning. Very nice.
  8. I didn't even realise the market was there during the week!
  9. Otto - I got a very similar (although not identical) response to yours regarding my complaint. Basically, a denial that the service has got worse, and claiming that before they took over, the waiting time was over 2 weeks.
  10. Hmmm... perhaps the N Koreans actually trained them as spies, and put out the story of KJI eating them as a kind of bluff. It's all falling into place.
  11. Bryan Cocksedge, thanks for pointing me towards http://www.hoax-slayer.com. This makes interesting follow-up reading after the article I linked to the other day. It turns out that instead of using these giant bunnies for breeding, Kim Jong-Il may have just scoffed them all instead!! http://www.hoax-slayer.com/giant-rabbit.shtml
  12. No, I think he's with Ludlow.
  13. Dr De Soto - I wouldn't take newbuilds as indicative of the area, as they don't hold value as well as period properties. By their very nature, they lose their value when they are no longer "new".
  14. I know that if I was looking for some beautiful jewellery for a loved one's birthday, the first place I would look would be on ebay.
  15. Someone call the North Koreans, they'll take him off our hands... http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,458863,00.html
  16. A metre long rabbit? Chasing an old lady? Whatever you've been smoking, can I have some too?
  17. I'm not sure if *most* films are shot digitally yet, but I reckon most are digitally edited. So it's still being converted into digital before it gets converted back onto film. A quick google tells me that the lowest D-Cinema standard refresh rate is 24 frames per second... which should be fine. But again, I'm sure some projection equipment is better quality than others.
  18. I imagine that different movies are filmed on different equipment, and cinemas can also have different gear. You may have been unlucky. I think most digital cinema should be 2048x1080, so I'm surprised you could see any pixelization. Even if you were sitting in the front row, with an ultra-sharp projection, I don't think that should happen. Perhaps the cinema had been a bit cheeky and downloaded a divx off bittorrent?! Loads of stuff is already shot (or edited) digitally anyway, so there's no reason really why a digital projection should appear any more "blocky" than one where the digital image has been developed onto film (if that's the right phrase to use). This could get like the old vinyl vs CD debate... there will always be people who prefer the perceived "warmth" and imperfections of the old analogue medium, but I'm afraid they're going against the mainstream opinion.
  19. Acedout, the sound at the Ritzy is just fine... are there any cinemas these days which don't have full surround sound? The screens are a decent size, although I have a feeling there is one smaller screen in there which is not so great. But it's been a while. There's also a decent bar in there. The Surrey Quays Odeon is OK, I believe it is/was the first cinema in the UK to have digital projection capabilities in every screen. But obviously being an Odeon, the choice of films is strictly limited to the mainstream. And when the lights go up at the end, you realise how manky all the seats are.
  20. It really sucks. On two occasions they've not issued my repeat prescriptions because they mistakenly thought I was overdue for a review. Instead of phoning me up to tell me, they just ignored the requests. The telephone consultation system is infuriating, and when you eventually have the call - and manage to convince them that you need to see a doctor - you need to wait another 2 or 3 days for the appointment. It's convenient (in theory) because it's so close to my house, but I really need to get off my arse and find an alternative.
  21. I heard the same thing... I reckon it's a phoney, seeing as market price for scrap aluminium seems to be under ?1 per kilo, and an average can seems to weigh around 0.015 kilos. How much does Tennents cost?
  22. MelbourneGr - you really think that the price of two 2 bed flats, minus an 80k conversion would really come to much more (if anything) than the price of a decent sized terraced house?
  23. 4% rise in *asking prices* last month. Possibly because of wealthier people being out of a job?
  24. It's just that our new friend "whome" reminded me slightly of a couple of other posters with that closing remark... Good luck with the venture smokie - obviously previous incarnations of the pub have stuggled, and it's in a bit of an awkward location... near a busy-ish junction, with not many other places nearby that you'd bother making a trip to. Is the location right for cocktails and gourmet cuisine? I'm not sure...
