Where is the cake shop? I've walked down the length of Bellenden road in search of this cake shop, and not seen it...

Anyone else on the 40 bus this morning (and other bus issues)

Old Kent Road? Residential streets in between Walworth Road and Old Kent Road (going through Burgess Park if you feel brave)? -

I would agree that public transport is expensive in London though, compared with most other places I've been to. But this does not make anyone a "moron".

Has the ED housing market reached the bottom yet ( II )
Jeremy replied to snorky's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I am cynical regarding people buying houses because it's safer than putting money into the bank. Despite that article. Aren't all accounts now guaranteed by the government up to ?50,000? If that's not enough for you, you can split your money between different banks. If that still isn't enough for you, you can put your cash into an Irish bank, where all of your money will be guaranteed by the Irish government. And if you are still in doubt, buy gold. Buying a house (which will almost definitely go down in value in the short term) purely as a way of storing your money seems rather daft to me! -

Sounds like bullsh!t to me. -
Snorks - isn't the non-specified "meat" usually mutton... I thought that was standard? Nothing wrong with a bit of mutton! But I guess in the worst-case scenario, it could be meat of a more sinister variety. ms_1316 - I've had very few positive experiences of curry on Brick Lane. Could you recommend some of the good ones? My favourites round here are Omrith, Tandoori Nights, and Pistachio Club (in that order). I haven't been to Ganapati, as it's always full and I'm never organised enough to book in advance.

> Regulate the cost of private rentals No. It would be unworkable. > if you are going to have a social housing system make sure the councils have enough of their own housing stock. Yes. Blame past governments who have encouraged people to buy their council flats, for the sake of a short term cash injection.

Things you say to yourself upon leaving your front door.

5 items... always need the same 5 items. Wallet, oyster card, security pass, keys, phone. I have a terrible memory, so I just remember the number 5, then figure out what I have missing. Danny Dyer (dire?) is a good call, he's almost as annoying as Jamie himself! -
Lower interest rates boost the price of stocks, which is probably the biggest factor here. I agree with Asset, in that lower interest rates encourage borrowing and discourgage saving. But it's the lesser of two evils, I think the priority at the moment is to stop the slide in the stock market. Setting interest rates is a tricky balancing act...

More or less the > point you made earlier wasn't it? ;-) Yep... just pointing out that we have no way of knowing whether "we bombed her home" as has been suggested, whether she left because of the recent war, whether she was seeking asylum from the Taleban, or whatever.

I agree... fry the thing for a couple of minutes on each side, then stick the whole pan a warm oven for 3-5 minutes. It will leave you with some tasty juices in the pan, if you want to whip up a quick sauce.

Brendan - ?4 for a Magners, ?3.50 for a pint of generic continental lager... sounds about normal. I don't think anyone is accusing them of charging ?7.50 for a bottle cider! I think 4 main courses is OK... I have to admit that I am somewhat addicted to Ramsays Kitchen Nightmares, and if there's a small kitchen (or they can't afford loads of staff), the first thing he tells them to do is keep the menu small. Better to have 3-5 options cooked freshly than 10 options reheated or chucked into the deep fat fryer.

?7.50 for two pints... sounds normal. How much do you usually pay?

I don't blame the mother for moving into a nice house which the council offered her for free. Most people would do the same. Blame the council, and the landlord charging the crazy rent. Let's not get into the discussion about the war in Afghanistan, Taleban, bombed homes, persecution, etc because it's pure speculation at best.

Has Southwark Council invested in CDOs, SIVs, and suchlike?
Jeremy replied to macroban's topic in The Lounge
They are both "structured products", designed to make a profit based on debts. Collateralized Debt Obligation - sort of a packaged up collection of various debts which is sold on to an investor. Structured Investment Vehicle - a combination of borrowing short term at low interest and lending longer term at high interest, which is again packaged up for investors. Macroban - surely you're aware that bank employees aren't allowed to discuss their clients' trading activity? In fact, a lot of banks keep this data hidden from many of the employees. -

But it's all relative. A car suffers from none of the "5 points of hatred" I outlined earlier, it takes you from door to door, and obviously does not stop at bus stops. It doesn't seem unreasonable to suggest that most journeys would be twice as fast by car than by bus. (not trying to promote driving as such... just countering the argument). -

I was expecting a much more spirited argument from SeanMacGabhann! Come on, is that all you've got?! Personally, I can't read on buses. Firstly, I would get travel sick, and secondly, I can't focus with all the aforementioned rocking and jerking. -

Jeremy replied to Sue's topic in The Lounge
I hate buses. They are my least favorite method of transport, after train, walking, and car. I hate the way they crawl along, sometimes "rocking" back and forth, as if intentionally trying to make the passengers sick. I hate the dickheads who get on without paying, and then insist on staying put even after the drivers has turned off the engine. I hate the kids who sit there playing stupid music on their phones, as if they're daring someone to challenge them. I hate the way delivery vans park along the bus lanes. I hate the way you never know when the next one's going to come, because they don't (can't) run to any sort of timetable, and we don't have those red dot-matrix info boards here. Even if we did, they'd probably get smashed up. -
