I'm not talking about a bloody employment tribunal, I'm talking about real people, in the real world... where people don't pretend that everyone's the same. Where we are *allowed* to describe people by their ethnic group or nationality. Where we can acknowledge and celebrate our differences, and even poke gentle fun at each other in a good natured way... and we know where to draw the line. You seem to have no perception of where that line is. As soon as someone mentions the word "black" or "asian", you start telling them off. Life isn't an HR department.
  2. I agree that in principle, the "sushi" comment is similar to "rosbif" and "frog". However, the manner in which it is used is much more relevant than the word itself. These words are usually used in good humour, and such banter is taken in the spirit it was intended. However, if you shout at someone in public, deliberately trying to intimidate/alienate them, then it becomes a different matter... that's what makes it offensive.

  4. Soft drinks have been a similar price as beer in pubs for quite a while, as far as I'm aware. I think it's pretty much unjustifiable, seeing as a) it's reconstituted on-site and costs almost nothing, and b) it's almost encouraging people to get boozed up. But I expect someone will tell us it's down to the pubcos...
  5. Baked bean curry... fry some onions with whatever spices you want, add beans, cook until "claggy". Eat with toast or naan bread!
  6. I wonder how long it will be before the balance of prices/rents/interest is favourable for buy-to-let again?
  7. DaveR, you make a fair point... but surely there's a difference between renting out properties for the steady return on investment, and rampant property speculation. It's the latter which is the problem... investors have been buying properties at prices which would give a terrible ROI, so have obviously been looking for capital gains. Just my opinion, I'm far from an expert on this stuff...
  8. If someone has worked hard, earned a bit of money and wants a second home, I think that's OK... I don't object to second homes in the same way that I object to treating residential property as a financial investment. But I agree that something does need to be done to limit its impact on the housing market. We already have capital gains tax for second homes and investment properties... but maybe another system is needed.
  9. Perhaps it would help if you thought of it as a "community centre" for music lovers, which also sold records and CDs in an attempt to partically cover the rent. At least, that is my interpretation of this venture.
  10. I thought the chippy on north cross road was going to open an eel/pie/mash annex?

I was of course referring to the nutters who believe there are ghosts walking around... but now I think about it, I'm even more annoyed by the crap journalists who pick up stories like this, lending credibility to this nonsense!
  12. A grainy photo of some trees at night, taken with a cheap camera... some people will just see what they want to see. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/2298708/English-Civil-War-ghost-captured-on-film-by-paranormal-enthusiasts.html
  13. A colleague of mine from New Zealand assures me that velcro gloves are most useful in these situations.
  14. Yeah... sounds like a lot to me in the "current climate", etc. There are some pretty nice looking 3 bed places on at around the 500k mark.
  15. Creperie is a good idea... do any of the current crop of cafes do pancakes? Wagamama is pretty bad - seriously, Ramen is not supposed to taste of dishwater! A decent Japanese / noodle place would be good though. I'd be perfectly happy if somewhere like Edo (Crystal Palace) opened in ED, although their sushi is overpriced. I've never tried ping pong, but I've never been tempted because the dim-sum selection never looks as good as a proper Chinese place. And having a Chinese girlfriend, I am usually forbidden from entering any establishment which could be described as "trendy asian"! I'd also like somewhere which did authentic Indian sweets, but that won't happen.
  16. I had a drink in Inside 72 a couple of weeks before it shut. It was empty. Yes, many of us liked that little bar, but quite clearly it wasn't popular enough to survive. It just goes to show that you really need to support your favorite local businesses, especially if they're a little less "mainstream".
  17. None of the Chinese places are great, and none do dim sum.
  18. Has anyone read "timewasters letters"?
