  1. The local co-ops were all part of "The Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society" - known just as "R.A.C.S" for short. I assume they began in Woolwich and have nothing whatsoever to do with a French football team in North London....:))
  2. >> i was genuinely curious as to who if anyone is called Val. Still am in fact...<< I thought it had been called "Val's" for ages and ages, but the current proprietors did not change the shop's name when they took it over?
  3. >>Warren Mitchell (AKA Alf) is in fact a Jewish man who has had to deal with no end of abuse in his life, and was poking >>fun at all that. << Probably why he made him a West Ham supporter too...:))
  4. That's Bolton relegated then....
  5. Can one really take seriously a car called a "Tata"?! Noone wants to look like a tit when driving surely? muahahaha :))
  6. Arsenal 3 v 0 Birmingham Aston Villa 3 v 0 Reading Chelsea 2 v 1 Tottenham Derby 1 v 1 Wigan Everton 2 v 1 Man. City Middlesbrough 1 v 1 Liverpool West Ham 2 v 0 Fulham Man. United 4 v 1 Newcastle Sunderland 0 v 2 Portsmouth Bolton 1 v 0 Blackburn >>Are they going to give italian lessons to the likes of Rooney?<< I suppose someone, and it may as well be myself, is going to ask if they will first teach him English? :))

Well I almost fell off my chair laughing at that second URL... :))
  8. "Under section 184 of the Highways Act 1980 if you want to construct a vehicular access (also called a 'dropped crossing') to your property across a public footway then you need permission from the Highway Authority to do so. If the road is classified (an A or B road) you will also need planning permission, which you will need to apply for separately. There are two main reasons for building a vehicle crossing. Firstly, pavements are designed and constructed for pedestrian use. Persistent driving over or parking on a pavement may cause hazardous potholes or may damage underground cables and pipes, which can be dangerous and costly to repair. Secondly, it is an offence to drive a vehicle over a pavement or verge which is not part of a properly constructed vehicle crossing and the Council has powers under the Highways Act 1980 to serve a Notice on offenders and recover all reasonable costs for building a vehicle crossing. It is against the law for a vehicle to cross a footway other than via a properly constructed crossing." That is from http://www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/DroppedkerbsCrossings_index.htm
  9. Newcastle's problem is that they think they should be a top 4 club when really they're a top 10 club...
  10. Try section 184 of the Highways Act 1980

    >>The Falklands - political / intelligence cock up to allow them to be invaded unexpectedly - an act of aggression that >>was against international law. A proper, and well conducted, military response was carried out to recover the islands >>that had been invaded by another nation. << She was determined to go to war no matter what, and attempts by the Americans to head it off by diplomacy were brushed aside. Still it won the next election for her...
  12. >>Apologies, I should have stated the many council properties that USED to be in the area.Of course these days the >>council properties are probably few and far between<< I suspect there may be rather more than you think, epecially if you included Right To Buy leaseholds, which are still technically council properties. and are dotted all over SE22, and not just in purpose-built flat blocks either!
  13. Oh joy! the 4th Round game between Sheffield United and West Ham/Manchester City has been shifted to a 4pm Sunday kickoff and will be shown live on Sky! My head tells me Sven's lot should win their replay but I really do hope it is the Hammers...>:D<

    >> Blair was a master, as was Mrs T at her peak. << And they both dragged us unnecessarily into wars.....which Brown has yet to do (also being objective of course)
  15. Agree with all the positive comments about the Panasonic. We have had ours almost 2 years and it has been used 3 or 4 times a week and saved a fortune in sandwich shop lunches. We can spend 5 minutes on a Saturday evening loading it, press a couple of buttons and there's a brand new load ready fist thiing the next morning. I am not knocking "proper" breadmaking by any means but soemtimes you really do need the time and the convenience. Oh it makes fantastic dough for hot cross buns too... When I bought our Amazon was doing the cheaped deal.
  16. Not only not factual, but possibly libellous as well
  17. >>Cramped? 860 sq ft according to my details. That's quite big for a 2 bed flat!<< I was basing my judgement on how narrow they look inside from what you can see of them from Underhill Road.
  18. The website is a good start to look. You'll need several visits to really do the place justice (and that excludes any of the - sometimes riveting - special exhibitions they have on). The cafe is very nice but take a spare arm and leg with you to pay... The place is very busy at weekends, but even during the week if you are unlucky your visit can correspond with a coachload of american artlovers bussed in from a West End Hotel... But this and the Horniman are both local jewels we are very lucky to have I think!
  19. >> why must every steak sandwich be filled with so much caramelised red onion that you can taste nothing else!?!?<< "How did you find your steak sir?" "I just spooned about 8 ounces of caramelised onions to one side and there it was!" (c. Veryoldjokes Inc.) But it's true the more onions you add, the less steak you require to "fill" the sandwich...:)) SimonM
  20. >>They are fugly, I'd go with the wrecking ball.<< I agree they are ugly and cramped, but I'd hold off on the wrecking ball as they did replace a horrible, wrecked house that stood there for years. These flats are clearly overpriced - you'd think they'd be ideal for young professional (cycling!) singletons in not terrbly well-paid jobs. I imagine though they must have cost a fortune to put up because of all the demoltion and ground clearance and excavation beforehand. I think the new block facing the Rye near Piermnt Green is much nicer in every way - as it should be though at ?325K for a 1.5 bedroom flat...
  21. I hate to be the grumpy killjoy but - bit of fun or not - these are people's livelihoods we are toying with. That's not to say I'd ever wish to discourage someone posting details of an outstandingly good or bad experience with a particular outlet on here - even though these things are subjective they can be useful sometimes. I am just not sure about "institutionalising" it, as it were, in a dedicated topic. Plus I think in the interests of fairness local retailers, restauranteurs etc should be actively encouraged to name and shame lousy, bothersome or dishonest customers by name... :))
  22. I am sure Sheffield United v West Ham would be quite a spicy encounter - but suspect it will be Man City. That is another attractive prospect though and, having seen off the mighty Wanderers of Bolton, I feel sure Sven will be shaking in his hand-tooled boots at the propsect of visiting BDTBL*. I just hope it is televised live... SimonM *"Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane"
  23. There's a little place in The Gardens now on the market for ?1.5 million: don't all rush!
  24. >>>Ray Winstone can float... <<< Only if you blow up his Lilo for him first.....
