Children cycling on the pavement , and cycle training
Pugwash replied to malumbu's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yesterday driving down LL into Grove Vale on our way to Sainsburys, going slowly as a bus was about to depart from the Elsie Road bus stop when a young child on bike dashed across the road from Elsie Road to Kwik Fit. Child was about 3 or 4 riding a bike without pedals. Fortunately there was a gap in the traffic otherwise the child would have been killed. Noticed an adult (father?) on bike looking to do a right turn from Elsie Road- not sure whether he had anticipated crossing with the child by his side and that the child took it upon themselves to charge across the road. I am all for children learning how to be safe on the road but that struck me as irresponsible. I would have got off my bike and wheeled it on the pavement to the traffic lights outside the school so both of them could cross safely. It was around 3.30 pm with all the school traffic etc, Our 10 year old grandchild has recently graduated to a larger bike as her mother wishes her to cycle to secondary school eventually as where she lives in Durrington Sussex there very few bus routes to secondary schools. She rides on the pavements alone 'round the block' to give her confidence but her area is residential with light traffic and no shops, a far cry from London streets/traffic. -
This. Young children cycling on pavements cannot be expected to be aware and mindful of pedestrians so their parents should be vigilant on their behalf. I agree that children need to use pavements for safety reasons and it is up to the parents to ensure that the children are made aware of other folk around them. Children need to cycle in front of the adults so that adult can spot any impending 'danger' .

Postman spotted in Barry Road this morning, nothing for us, but not seen this postie before. We had a regular guy for some months but have not seen him around, possible different route?

As everyone has stated, Josephs might be expensive but in terms of sizing and quality, never had a bad meal from them. In fact they are so generous with their food that we order 2 fish and one portion of chips as servings are very large. Ordered food from them last week and got usual good quality stuff.

With so many young children now riding bikes on the pavement, it is imperative that their parents/carers teach them to be aware of pedestrians as well. Spotted today in LL - mother ahead with phone in hand - youngsters on bikes several yards behind and people trying to move aside. On child was about 3 years old and riding bike without pedals. Having been out with our 10 year old grandchild over weekend with her new bike - we were more aware of the numbers of children riding about in area, some having little regard to other pavement users.

Moped crash scams around Barry Road/Underhill/Goodrich
Pugwash replied to Katie B a's topic in Roads & Transport
This scam was mentioned in the I paper last week- it is all over the country. Police recommend that anyone affected immediately notify your insurance agencies. Also attend your local Police SNT meetings or Cuppa with a Copper informal sessions and report these incidents. -
About 8 letters and small parcel arrived yesterday. Bank statements were a week late.

Years ago I was advised to book for Tai Chi at the leisure centre under their Silver user criteria. Was nor able to do it on line so went in person, they tried doing it on line but informed me that all spaces were filled. Turned out that as the participants came out of the class, they booked the next session on line using their phones before even exiting the centre. This meant potential new members never got a chance

'Foodbank' street collector outside M&S
Pugwash replied to Castleton's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
if you are a legitimate collector you are obliged to wear an ID badge with the organisation/charity's details on and if my memory serves me correctly- the police need to be informed. Recall some years ago there was a local charity collection in ED and the organiser had to inform the police of dates/.areas etc and show some form of authorisation. -
Lordship Lane pavement on a rainy day is a disgrace
Pugwash replied to rMattos's topic in Roads & Transport
In Barry Road, it is not only the poor pavements and puddles, it is the dangerous tree roots which are hazards to buggies, wheelchairs/mobility scooters and pedestrians in general. My neighbour uses a mobility scooter and finds it difficult to negotiate the hump and uneven surface of the tree roots by the Plough PH (Barry Road side). I use a walking stick and some times a 3 wheel walking frame, and have the same problem balancing. A friend earlier in the year tripped over the tree roots of the tree outside St Anthony's School (Barry Road side) and laid there until someone could come t o her assistance. I would hate a treeless street but at times the council need to consider the needs of all residents. Although I am a car owner, I would not dream of parking in Lordship Lane etc - it is far easier to go by bus. -
Hubby got fed up getting messages telling him that he had failed to attend - on checking it was a mistake as he had not booked in for a session anyway. With all the tech problems he cancelled his membership. Even though he has to pay more per swim, he goes to Forest Hill Pool where he can book in person at the time most convenient for him.

I do not know of any Pet Plan that covers the above. Ours covers illness/surgery/death and loss. Try ringing PDSA for advice or Cat Protection.

Have used this company for years in connection with our community centre and residents' association. Efficient and reasonable price. They also did the invitation cards for our silver wedding party.

Good value local hairdressers (for women)?
Pugwash replied to redjam's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I go to Adam's Hair in Dartmouth Road Forest Hill (opposite swimming pool), Had lowlights cut and blow dry for £75 a couple of weeks ago. Last time I had this done was £65, -
Just had Niko around to fix some leaky taps. As always very reasonable re costs. Came around initially to check the problem and came back a couple of hours later with required replacements parts. All fixed in less than an hour. Prefers to be paid via cash.

Many state schools combine their 6th Forms and call them 'colleges' .My girls went to a 6th Form Consortium which was also called a college by some people. My grandson (now 20) went to a college at 16 in Bromley - was free tuition until he was 18 and after that his Mum had to pay.

Try Turners in Barry Road.
-
Is the 6th Form in a private or independent school? State 6th Forms will remain free.

Dulwich Park when it closes at night
Pugwash replied to Katherty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Years ago the park keepers used to ring a bell to give notice of closing - they were the only people who could drive around the perimeter of the park. Park used to close 'at dusk' no idea now of time - check notice boards by gates. -
My youngest was bullied at Sydenham (which i was not aware of until her form teacher rang me). Daughter decided to confront the bullies, and reported them to both form teacher and head of year. With the support of the school, she informed the bully's parents what she had endured and was not bullied again. This was many years ago and daughter is now a 38 year old teacher of pupils from 14 onwards. She looks out for signs of bullying and is ready to step in when necessary.

M&S LORDSHIP LANE - CASH ONLY
Pugwash replied to Baroness Millhaven's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Many small businesses take cash only i.e some local cafes/shops/hairdressers in both ED and Forest Hill. As well as my card - always try to have around £10/£20 cash on me. Daughter in Sussex is trying to teach her 8 and 10 year old value of money and budgeting, finds it hard to demonstrate with hard cash as so few shops take cash where she lives. Ended up in getting those debt cards for children. -
Private schools tend to break up end of June or first week of July

We went digital with our landline last autumn as heard that this was inevitable by 2025. Government/telecoms have now pushed this back to 2028. For the 3rd time in as many months. we cannot make or receive calls. Internet is working. Have tried ringing from mobile to number( 0800 800151} no answer. Family and friends worried that they cannot get hold of us. Hubby has tried on his mobile but no joy. Anyone else have this problem?. Would like to go back to the analogue system which was at least reliable but imagine that this is not possible.
