  1. Having been a volunteer in the past before my health deteriorated with Link Age I know they have volunteer drivers and garden help but never heard of car pumping help!
  2. Poverty was rife in ED during 50s and 60s. and with it a degree of crime. Growing up in the 1950s in ED - we lived in a top flat in Spurling Road. We shared an outside WC with the flat downstairs which meant walking through their kitchen. We had black mould in rooms as damp was coming through the flat roof. We were wired for light but not power so could not have a fridge. No hot water - washing was done with kettles in the kitchen sink. My Mum was a shop worker and I stayed with my Nan and Aunts at weekends as Mum could not afford to feed us both 7 days a week. When she ran out of money our main meal was mashed potatoes with chopped tomatoes. Mum managed to give me one shilling a day (5p) for school dinners (sometimes the only hot meal I had) There was crime - gangs in Camberwell sometimes overspilled into ED, petty crime was common including shoplifting (especially from Woolworths (now Poundland) if there was gun/knife crime - the kids were not aware of it. Most of my school friends in Grove Vale (now Goose Green) school were in similar private rental properties and came from homes where poverty was the norm.
  3. I have problems with bending down to fit air pump onto tyre valve= so owning my own pump is a non starter. I tend to pump up the tyres every couple of months now that i do not use the car daily. Might try Kwik Fit - but every time I pass there, loads of cars waiting to go in - may try the one in Sydenham.
  4. Can anyone advise where i can get my tyres pumped up? Due to arthritis and other health conditions, I find it very difficult to use petrol station pumps, and have for several years used the tyre guy at the Grove Vale (Melbourne Grove end) and give him a few pounds for doing this. Unfortunately since Christmas he has had 4 air pump lines cut. so cannot help. As the lines cost £250 each it could be some time before I can use him again. Prior to him, I used the tyre place near Turners in Barry Road (it has been gone for years so that is how long ago it was). Unfortunately family are in Kent and Sussex, and local friends are not car users. If anyone has a good tyre pump who could assist for a few pounds please PM me. Thanks,
  5. The local police have been involved with the Local Sainsburys for months (all those who have attended the Dulwich Hill Police Meetings over the past year will be aware of this). There has been a lot of shoplifting at this store but the manager at the time refused to give police the CTV tapes despite several requests in person. Maybe after this incident they will become more cooperative.
  6. I used to go to The Capital cinema in the 60s/70s/80s cannot remember when the cinema closed but as far as know I have never heard of a pop concert being there. In the 60s/70s my friends an I used to go to Lewisham Odeon and Tooting Odeon seeing Freddie and the Dreamers, Herman Hermits, Walker Brothers and other groups of that era. My pop concert days ceased when I had my eldest child and got a mortgage and did not have the money for 'treats'. My music cravings are now catered by going to Churchill Theatre in Bromley.
  7. The after school care for St A is based in Christ Church Barry Road. The staff collect the children from the school which is less than 100 metres away. This pre and after school club has been running for a number of years and has a good reputation. Also their opening hours are longer than most other after school clubs making it easier for working parents to collect.
  8. I got caught last year at Lidl in Old Kent Road. had not been there before and assumed that it was 2 hour free parking as Lidl in Peckham was at that time. Was 10 minutes over their time (1.5 hrs) There were only 2 self serve tills working and only 2 assistant managed tills so had to wait 15 minutes in queue as too much to use self serve . Not been back there since.
  9. Hubby was informed that the problem was the gas leak in the street.
  10. From what I have heard from other leaseholders in Southwark bills from £5000 to £30.000 depending on type of work. My old neighbour was in a conversion flat and paid £5000 for exterior painting including scaffolding costs and within 3 months most of the paint has worn off.
  11. If you come under Dulwich Hill ward email [email protected] At the last police meeting they talked about various scams and also 'dodgy characters' who were around this time of year. If you are in Goose Green ward email [email protected]
  12. When you talk of retirement homes do you mean Care Homes or a retirement complex. Retirement Homes are privately purchased properties for over 55 year olds. Leasehold with quite high maintenance charges. If Care Home - just goggle Lewis House and you should get a link to get a report on the home.
  13. For the past month there has been a notice posted on the entrance doors re closure dates. Quite clear to see and read.
  14. We use William Bailey in ED Road and have done for years. Hubby updated his will last week (due to death of one of his beneficiaries) and was told that a number of legal firms have closed down (retirement of partners?) and his firm was inundated with work.
  15. Try EROS dance which meets at the East Dulwich Community Centre in Darrell Road on Saturdays. Very popular with classes for all age groups.
  16. They are closed for 4 days from 1st December for refurbishment (or is it 3 days) I must admit I have converted to the SMART shop and scan items as I go along. This allows me to pack as I go along which saves time. You do not need a SMART phone - just scan your nectar card. in Lidl and Aldi - I go to the assistant aisles as not overkeen on self scan unless you only have a few items.
  17. Have lived in Barry Road since 1975 - the top end by Lordship Lane. Catchment area for Heber Primary and St Anthony's RC primary. Harris Boys by Peckham Rye. Our girls went to Sydenham Girls secondary school in Forest Hill (short bus ride away). Busy Road with 2 bus routes, parking difficult unless you have off road. Bus terminus in Etherow Street for 40 route. Shops at LL end - newsagent, chemist, grocers, dry cleaner, fish and chips, Chinese take away, Sainsburys' local, Plough Homecraft, Indian take away, Kebabs, library. Café, hairdressers, Bread of Life Café in Christ Church (open weekdays) Fair Trade Centre in same building. In Darrell Road which is between Upland and Underhill Roads - you have East Dulwich Community Centre which is used by various groups during week, plus children's dance groups on Saturdays. Small shops in both Underhill and Upland Road Long gardens both side of road LL to Goodrich, a mix of sizes further down - dependent on whether houses or flats.
  18. BT are changing our phones over to digital in the next 30 days. We are fortunate as we have broadband but many of my associates do not and rely on landlines. None of them have had any communication as to what happens to them after switch over. Some are elderly or have English as a 2nd language. One is partially deaf/blind and physically disabled with a landline but has not been contacted as to how she make calls etc. I have looked at various on line videos by BT how to set up the new system but they are confusing and in some cases require a lot of bending down and re distributing of connection points. Does anyone know an independent person who could be contacted to do some of the physical setting up of the new system? Interested to hear from others who have gone through the process.
  19. Also at the event will be a tombola stall to raise money for the Wednesday Warm Hun Group for Older People.
  20. I used the Co Op in LL for one Amazon delivery.
  21. If like me you are unable to carry heavy bags then once a week trip in car to a supermarket is essential. I use Sainsbury's. Lidl and Aldi - as I like variety of choice and price. I buy loose veg usually as I can pick out as I need to avoid food waste. I use own brands rather than big names and always look at the reduced items (2 this week which went into the freezer savings of £5). I like Aldi at Bell Green as parking is good - also other shops to look at if required. I watched in amazement yesterday at a middle aged woman picking up 4 packets of Uncle Ben's rice at £2.84 a packet when shops own brand was considerably less. Admittedly some items on my shopping list were not in stock so my bill was considerably lower. I think it is also a question of education re food purchases etc. Both of my daughters tend to ignore brand names, one rarely purchases ready meals preferring to batch cook for herself and 2 primary age children. She works part time as a teacher but gets universal credit to boost her income and help pay for 2 days pre and after school child care. As she and one of the children have food intolerances she is limited with commercially made products. I agree that you can get cheap fruits and veg off stalls in Rye lane (a large bowl of red/green grapes last week for £1) but supermarkets do have their uses.
  22. Barry Road - we have had 2/3 deliveries this week including Sundays.
